Advantages: None i just found out the price!!
Disadvantages: SLOW!!!!! Even on a 266Mhz
UPDATE 10/10/00 I have asked a few people do they actually need to update their operating system, or are they just doing it because other people they know are, or because its the latest update so its got to be amazing. Lots of people have said "they thought it was better" (as in miles better). But think about it, do all your software applications work? does all your hardware work with the latest drivers? if yes then you could be wasting money! if no then I can only say have a look at Windows 2000 or wait til both Windows combine. I just thought i'd make the point. Ask yourself "do I need to update?" If you are having a few problems with Win98 check out: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ there are some updates which have fixed my major problems! I have had Windows ME for a while now as I am subscribed to one of Microsoft’s deals, and so I get full versions early. This is my review as I have now fully experienced ME. This is just another Windows with its supposedly amazing and wondrous updates. Well its a better upgrade than Win98 (from Win95) meaning it is more noticeable, but is it better? Well for a start you have to have a Pentium 150Mhz + to run ME. I was shocked as I couldn’t put it on an old Pentium 90 Laptop. I also have another old PC running 133Mhz I had to overclock it, but now I have gone back to Win 98SE on both PC's. This version of Windows has not been experienced before so it is probably why there are mistakes. Basically Win ME does not run in DOS anymore unlike previous Windows. This is quite annoying because if you have a problem where is DOS to help you!! Also if you have an old sound card (like mine which is a SoundBlaster 16 ISA) your DOS games will have dodgy sound or no sound at all. Yes there is a cut down version of DOS (for old programs) but this can only be run once you are in Win ME. So far it has crashed lots of times on my 133Mhz PC (overclocked to 150Mhz
) I have had errors such as, Registry problems, annoying blue screens (yes they're still around), also the worst one I have ever seen!! I turned on my PC as normal to do some work and guess what, I had an error saying, "Explorer is unable to load, please reinstall Windows" so I did, Win98! If you have Windows 98 or Windows 98Second Edition, I don’t recommend ME to you! PROS: None at the moment! CONS: Crashes, (I have yet to test Win ME on my normal machine which is High-Tech, as I don’t trust ME one bit) No real advantage over Win98, it may improve your web camera speed and quality by 0.01% but thats about it. I went into a computer shop today (22/09/00) only to find that the price of ME has gone up. I was told that if you already had a version of Windows that it would only cost £35 but i found that it was priced at £75. So that will probably make you think twice. Sorry Guys I just wasn’t impressed. If any one from Microsoft reads this I will be more than happy to help by sending my Errors to you. pow1983@yahoo.co.uk And if normal readers want to E-Mail me and ask questions please do. Or write some comments and i will get back to you. Thanks for reading.

- 10/08/01 As a Win98 2E user with no real experience of other PC O/S's (Unix man at work), I did find this review useful - a bit thin but relevant. I have to admit that compared with many very expensive professional software houses I have dealt with, MS is not bad at all. At least their stuff works at worst 95% which is pretty good considering the wide complexity of the elements. Where reviews like this help me, is in sifting the commercial money-making upgrades from the technically desirable ones. I use and highly recommend 'GoBack' recovery software with Win98 but I believe a similar tool is rolled into Windows ME. If it does the same job, the upgrade cost would be justified for the peace of mind it gives. (It costs about £50 stand alone from Roxio.) |

- 17/01/01 Totally agree. I felt a little ripped off after buying ME to upgrade my perfectly fine 98. The only useful new tool was the ability to restore the system to a set point, but that was only because of the constant crashes.. and I have 450 Mhz system. Nothing much else added that you can't download for free on the net. |

- 31/10/00 I'm in complete agreeance with you pow!
Windows ME is a big waste of time and really can't see why Microsoft even bothered with it.
Windows 9x was meant for 'home' use as opposed to Windows NT (ala 2000) because it runs games, multimedia & supported much more hardware. Windows 2000 now meets this requirement (I myself use it at home for work & games without a hitch), so why Windows ME ??
Windows 200 even has all the cr*ppy 'multimedia' annoyances such as 'My Pictures' etc which has now splatted itself all over my works servers!! WHY - I don't see the logic!!!
Sorry, pow - getting a bit emotional here!! (sad I know)
