Advantages: loads more stable, better features, well supported
Disadvantages: cost of the upgrade
My computer has been changed so much for the better since I replaced Windows 98 with Windows ME. Don't get me wrong in terms of features Windows 98 was a very good operating system, as would be verified by the massive worldwide sales that turned it into the industry standard. The problem that I had with Windows 98 is a similar one to most people. This was stability. The amount of times I was forced to restart my machine through explorer crashes was absolutely ridiculous. It got incredibly annoying and left me wondering how a company could release software that was obviously poorly tested. Despite the fact that that ME is built on the Windows 9X core, it is a massive improvement. It has all the features of 98 plus a whole lot more and the key is that it is 100% more stable. I have hardly had any crash and i've been using it for months now it really is a breath of fresh air. I have to congratulate Microsoft on this because this stability hasn't been seen since Windows 3.1x!! There are many new features in Me, the best one being the advancement of Internet Connection Sharing. It is so easy to setup internet connection sharing so 2 computers can share 1 connection by the use of a network, that a child could set it up. Me and my son have linked our machines and we can now go online at the same time and at our own machines. There is very little speed difference between the 2 operating systems. All my games run at the same speed on ME as they did on 98 or at least if there is a difference it is unrecognisable to me. Overall if your still on 98, if you can afford it goto ME because it is worth it for the extra features and particularly the extra stability. Well worth the money.
