I?m not a massive windows fan the new editions fly out and I stick with 98 until now!! XP has seen a lot of publicity as has all the Windows packages and is a combination of 98 and ME. XP includes features like an improved media player, instant messaging and integration with web service passports. The controversial side is that XP has an activation scheme that deters users from installing one copy on multiple machines ? more money for Bill Gates although he does not need it!! I find the system very user friendly and the interface is much simpler and cleaner. Multiple users can now use a single machine and each user can maintain his / her own preferences and switching amongst users is fast and simple. Windows XP is supposed to recognise drivers better and faster but this I have found the biggest problem. My modem drivers cost me one major headache, as XP compatible drivers are not really available as yet on the net. This kept me off Dooyoo for all of 24 hrs!! Mind you the drivers for my Epson 750 from XP improved the performance ten fold. XP performs five to twenty percent faster than Windows ME but depends on the spec. of your PC. XP?s basic requirements are 128MB of RAM although the performance improves with the more RAM installed. To me the ?layman? the best improvement with XP is the colours and the user-friendly side of things. I switch my PC on and I see colour and the access system is much easier for common programs. A definite winner on my behalf I don?t fully understand the benefits as yet but first impressions are very good ? well done young William!!

- 08/11/01 I have 98 and I think I'll stick with it a while. My father-in-law has had a hard time merging XP with 2000's Outlook. He's lost his entire address book and it's been a frustrating experience. I guess it doesn't help that he doesn't know much about computers except for how to turn them on, but still. - Christiane |
