Microsoft Windows XP Professional (especially XP sp2) is preferred by most Windows users including me. I have used Windows 3.1, 3.2, 95, 98, ME, XP and Vista. Among them, It is the longest time I use XP and still continue to use it (downgrade from Vista).
Why?
1. It is secure and not easy to be attacked.
2. Easy to use. I was familiar with windows 98 and NT, and I learnt to how to use Windows XP quite easily.
3. Good networking
4. Quite good remote control which I use it to remote control my few desktops easily. With remote control, we have different options to access remote PC with different accessibility. Only problem is it can be used only for local area network (LAN). For internet remote control, I have to use other software.
5. Hardware requirements (a Pentium II-300 or faster, 128MB of RAM, and 1.5GB of free disk space) are not harsh.
6. A lot of hardware and software supports. Usually we do not need to worry about the drivers. Drivers of most of hardware can be automatically installed.

Some drawbacks
Annoying shutdown notification upon automatic update finish. If we do not cancel, it will automatically shut down in a few minutes. What if we are running something without our cares? We will lose invaluable stuff in that case.
