Advantages: Security centre and great file handling

Disadvantages: Doesn't look as nice as Vista

I've used Windows XP since forever and even though I have a Vista laptop I prefer to use XP over Vista any day.

XP pro is probably the best XP OS generally because it has pretty much all of the features XP can have bar Windows Media Centre. I like XP because it is most like the original 95 layout and is not much different from previous releases; this is probably why XP is still the most popular OS amongst businesses.
Actually XP is still the most used OS by far even over Vista, which makes sense with the trouble there was with Vista to start with and now they've fixed these problems it's a bit late in the day to be ordering up Vista when Windows 7 comes out in 3mths time. Actually I'm quite looking forward Windows 7 and although I haven't been part of the beta or release candidate it looks very good and I will definitely purchase it when it comes out in October.
Anyway enough about other operating systems, now for an actual Windows XP Pro review. Why would you get XP now anyway (yes you still can buy it)? Well if your laptop or desktop shipped with Vista and you've been holding off the downgrade I would still recommend downgrading, there are things that still make XP great.

So why was/is XP so good? Well the interface is much nicer than previous versions with its round 3Dish windows and taskbar. Unlike Vista also XP does not suffer from the incompatibility issues with certain games like COD4 which I had trouble installing in Vista.
I'll give it to Vista though it does file handle better than XP in my opinion but you do need more RAM and a better processor for it to do so.
Security centre in XP is great; you can control the Windows firewall (I would recommend using this than a dedicated one) and other things like the anti-virus software you have installed plus your automatic updates settings.
Installing drivers is hell of a lot easier than Vista. Also I'd like to add that although XP didn't originally support WPA2 encryption it was released in a service pack (not too sure which one) so now we can use all encryption modes available via wireless networks.

So overall I would defiantly still recommend getting XP but realistically you should just wait for Windows 7 to come out in October and if you're quick you can get it half price on Amazon for a limited time.

Summary: I would still recommend after all this time but wait until Windows 7

There's a lot of assumed bits in here, and the allergic-to-techy-types wouldn't find this helpful I don't think. I know XP precedes Vista, and that COD4 is a game, but I don't think everyone would.
