Advantages: user interface, speed on most machines

Disadvantages: update glitches, vulnerable to security threats

Having used previous versions of windows such as 95, 98 and 2000 it was a refreshing experience to use windows xp due to the big change in the user interface & graphics. I found previous windows quite unstable - always frustratingly crashing when you needed it to be most reliable. 2000 was probably the most stable version I had used and that was due to it being based on nt similar to the new xp.

I liked the user account system and ease of navigation as well as the simplicity of using the admin tools. The auto update feature is useful to keep ahead of security issues which is always a problem with microsoft. Although after certain updates I did find certain peripherals stopped functioning as they should due to an incompatibility. Once microsoft finally updated the update the device would begin working again - I found this aspect of xp very frustrating. Overall a welcome update of the windows operating system and much quicker than vista on a lot of systems.
