I recently set up my computer to dual boot between XP and Ubuntu. I had used Windows since I had a computer and was interested to see what the fuss from the linux brigade was about. I was initially confused (as I think most windows users are) by the seemingly odd way of doing things but it wasn't long before I was getting used to it. One thing that was a problem was that I don't (or didn't then) have an internet connection. This meant that I couldn't use the software installer that comes in the package and that I couldn't use any other software unless I knew enough about programming (I didn't) to compile the programs from the source code that is available ... foreword: I'm actually reviewing Ubuntu 7.04, but it's much the same as 6.06 (and I have used 6.06 extensively too). After years of being first a PC (Windows) user, then a Mac (OSX) user, I made the decision last year to give Linux a go on my works computer - I'm a programmer, and I was attracted by the development features Linux offered. Ubuntu was my install of choice, because it's been designed specifically to be easy to install, and indeed there are 3 different types of downloadable CD depending on what you want to do - Server, Desktop, and Live. If there’s one name that evokes more under-the-collar heat in the computing world than anything else it’s Microsoft. Seemingly, Bill Gates & Co won’t be satisfied without world domination, and if I read it right, the next Windows version coming down the pipe, i.e. Vista may well be a kiss of death for hobbyists like me who build their own PCs, or maybe just evolve their PCs with a stage-by-stage upgrade.
