Advantages: Free, fast, easy and loads more (Too many too list)

Disadvantages: None

I have recently installed Ubuntu 8.04 on my old laptop, which only has 128mb.

Installing was extremely easy and took around 50 minutes. It also operates approx. 3 times faster than Windows.

It recognised all my hardware and installed the drivers without any problem, even my wireless network card.

The main display is very simple. On the top bar, the drop down menus are Applications, Places, System. There are also 3 icons for Firefox (Internet Browser), Evolution Mail and Help. It is very easy to add new applications to the bar.

Under the Application Menu, you have the following options;

Accessories (Which includes a calculator)
:
Games (There is a good selection)

Graphics (Photo, Scanning, Drawing packages)

Internet (Different Internet Applications)

Office (Openoffice Word Processor, Spreadsheet, Presentation and Database)

Sound and Video (Includes a movie player)

System tools

Add/Remove (Enables you to add different software, tool, games, etc)

Under the Places menu you have fast access to reach different folders or to search for a file or folder. Also under this menu, is where you can quickly access your most recent files.

Under System, you have Preferences and Adminstration. Under preferences, the desktop can be changed, for example change the background colour. Adminstration can change the way the system acts, add a new user, etc

With Openoffice, if you need to send a file to a person with Microsoft Offiice, Openoffice will let you save in the Microwave Office format. You can also save a file as a PDF.

Firefox for me is a lot a better than Internet Explorer.

Although Ubuntu has its own PDF reader, you can download a version of Adobe Acrobat for Ubuntu from their website. There is a deb file to download, and once installed, it integrates into Firefox with ease.

There is also a lot of help and forums online to help with any problems.

Summary: An Operating system that is very good and free for laptops/computers that have small memory
