Eucryl Toothpowder Freshmint
by trayrope
I am a massive fan of coffee; I love the stuff and can not happily get through a day without a couple of massive mugs. This unfortunately has a bit of a negative effect on my teeth and I feel that they are not as white as they could be. I have quite a rigorous dental regime of brushing, flossing and mouthwash twice a day as well as a ... visit to the dentist every six months.
In my quest for sparkly white perfection I always purchase whitening toothpaste so when I saw a tub of Eucryl toothpowder I decided to give it a go as it is designed to remove stains from coffee, tea, red wine and nicotine from teeth. Only the first two items apply to me.
The tooth powder is simple to use, just dampen your tooth brush a little and shake off any excess water then press the bristles of the brush into the powder. This will load your brush up with plenty of powder.
When brushing I found the tooth powder does not froth up that much at all. I was quite apprehensive about giving the powder a go as I thought it would have a horrible medicinal taste but it tastes just fine, it is fresh and minty and does not leave a horrible powdery after taste behind.
Afterwards my teeth felt very smooth and had that just polished feeling you get when leaving the dentists, I am using the tooth powder a couple of times a week as recommended on the box and using my regular toothpaste in-between.
Overall I think Eucryl tooth powder gives a gradual whitening effect by removing the build up of stains, I have been using it a couple of weeks and have noticed a gradual improvement in the whiteness of my teeth. Happily the tooth powder has not caused me any tooth sensitiveness so I will continue using it twice a week as a complementary addition to my tooth care regime.
The only down side for me is that the powder can be quite messy and seems to flick out of my mouth more than regular toothpaste does and if more than one person wants to use the tooth powder I would get an extra pot as it seems a bit unhygienic for a whole family to be poking a wet tooth brush in it each day.
I got my 50g tub from Poundland for a £1.

Sensodyne Protect and Repair Toothpaste
by paulshorse
I've always had slightly sensitive teeth which is most noticeable when eating something cold, although the sensitivity is not extreme - it doesn't make me scream and shout, or crawl up the wall in agony, but it's not a particularly pleasant experience and takes away the utter bliss of slurping on a delicious ice cream in summer. I ... discovered Sensodyne some years ago, and have used it ever since. I've always been more than happy with the regular toothpaste because it worked well and greatly reduced the sensitivity of my teeth. A couple of months ago I went to buy a new tube and couldn't find the type that I usually buy - in its place was something called Sensodyne Repair & Protect . I had a look at the box and the information and it looked as if it was going to be more beneficial than the regular Sensodyne toothpaste, and so I decided to try a tube, even though it was more expensive than the kind I usually buy. Repair & Protect comes in two varieties - regular and whitening, both of which are similarly priced, so I decided to try the whitening toothpaste.
PACKAGING:-
I bought the 75ml size which comes in a clean looking, almost clinical white and blue box with some quite clever mirror effects. There's a lot detail on the box including an explanation as to what causes tooth sensitivity, how the toothpaste works, warnings and precautions and ingredients. Basically tooth sensitivity occurs when the dentine underneath the tooth enamel becomes exposed and this exposure can trigger the nerves which results in pain. Sensodyne Repair & Protect uses something called Novamin which releases calcium and phosphate to form a protective mineral layer which repairs the vulnerable areas of the tooth. The tube inside the box is nothing out of the ordinary - white plastic with the instructions repeated in blue lettering, and with a large white plastic top which twists on and off easily.
INGREDIENTS:-
I really don't know if this will be useful or not, but this is what the toothpaste contains:-
Glycerin
PEG-8
Silica
Calcium Sodium Phosphosilicate (Novamin)
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
Sodium Monofluorophosphate
Titanium Dioxide
Aroma
Carbomer
Sodium Saccharin
Limone
MY EXPERIENCE USING THIS TOOTHPASTE:-
It's recommended that you brush twice a day using approximately 2cm of toothpaste, but not more than three times (probably wise looking at the list of chemicals). It should only be used by children under 12 on the advice of a dental professional or doctor. Two centimetres is quite a lot of toothpaste to use, especially when your toothbrush only has a 1cm head. I use an Oral B Triumph electric toothbrush which I've always found to be brilliant, but it's one of those that has the small oscillating head, and this is where I found the main problem to lie with this toothpaste. It initially gives quite good coverage but after around 30 seconds of brushing it gets thinner and thinner until after about a minute there's hardly any sign of toothpaste, so you have to stop and reapply more to the toothbrush head and start again (apparently the recommended length of time for effective brushing of teeth is 2 minutes). I never used to have this problem with regular Sensodyne toothpaste and I've no idea why it should happen with the Repair and Protect variety. In view of the popularity of electric brushes, I'm surprised that Sensodyne did not come across this problem when testing the product. It may, however, be perfectly suitable for use with a less powerful electric brush. On the plus side, I've had no issues with teeth sensitivity so the toothpaste does seem to be effective. It tastes pleasant - quite a strong, sweet, minty flavour which leaves your mouth feeling fresh, but if I run my tongue over my teeth after brushing there seems to be a kind of coating left on them, which is probably something to do with the Novamin. As for whitening my teeth, it does remove stains but I didn't see any material lasting improvement while I was using this toothpaste exclusively. Having said this, I don't think any toothpaste can make a great improvement in whitening teeth. I now brush once a day in the evening with this Sensodyne Repair and Protect and in the morning use a different brand which I've found leaves my teeth shiny and smooth and which doesn't need to be topped up half way through brushing.
PRICE AND AVAILABILITY:-
You can buy this in all supermarkets and pharmacies. At a regular price of around £4.25 for 75ml it is very expensive, but as with all toothpastes you can find it on offer occasionally, and Boots are currently selling it £4.29 with an offer of buy two get the third free.
CONCLUSION:-
I'm afraid I won't be buying Sensodyne Repair & Protect Whitening again - I'll revert to the regular variety. It may be perfectly suitable for manual toothbrushes, but it's a nuisance having to reapply the toothpaste half way through brushing with my electric one. Having said this the toothpaste does seem to work as I continue to have no issues with sensitivity even though I only use this now once a day, so I think that to be fair it does deserve a four-star rating.
