      Advantages

      Disadvantages

A useful addition to your dental hygiene routine that won't break the bank

Having noticed in recent months that the price of the premium brand mouthwashes seems to have really shot up I thought I would give the Asda Protect Extreme Fresh version a try. It comes in a 500ml bottle with a child proof cap (the type you have to squeeze and twist at the same time), this is most important as children should not be able to get into this as the product should definitely not be swallowed. According to the label this product contains fluoride and will protect against plaque, cavities and strengthen your tooth enamel in addition to keeping your breath fresh for up to 12 hours. More importantly, it is also recognised by the British Dental Health Foundation as a 'useful aid in dental care' which I personally find very reassuring.

The mouthwash is a pale blue colour and you only need to use half a capful at a time. When you swill half a capful around your mouth it immediately tastes fresh and minty and this stays with you for quite sometime. I have used it after having a particularly spicy curry for my evening meal and then gone on to meet friends, and there was no mention of 'who's had a curry?' (which has occurred in the past). By using half a capful after your morning tooth brushing and the same in the evening you can have fresh breath confidence the whole day through.

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

A good mouthwash at a good price

Mouthwash is a product which I use on a daily basis and have done for as long a I can remember, it was something that was always in the bathroom cupboard when I lived with my Mum and Dad and when I moved into my own house it is now something that I always keep in our bathroom.

I do not tend to stick to one brand, I do have a few favourites that I use regularly but I am always happy to try something new.  Near where me and my Husband live we have a Tesco store where we do our weekly shop and a smaller Asda store where we go from time to time to get a few top up bits during the week.  During a recent trip to our local Asda one item I needed to get was some mouthwash, I noticed that they had their own brand mouthwash available, Asda Protect Mouthwash Extreme Fresh, and it was reasonably priced so I decided to give it a go.

      Packaging
The Asda Protect Mouthwash Extreme Fresh comes in a rectangle shaped clear plastic bottle, it curves in slightly at the sides making gripping the bottle easy, the bottle has a large silvery grey lid on top of it which screws on and off, to remove the lid you do need to squeeze the sides of the lid and then turn it as though you were unscrewing the lid in a regular way.

The bottle has a clear label on the front of it, this has a large green rectangle in the centre of it which is made up of different shades of green sections.  In the top darker green section the word "Protect" is written in white going down this section, the word "Mouthwash" is written  underneath this going across the label, there is also a pattern in this section made up of white dots.

In the next slightly lighter green section just underneath this is the flavour of the mouthwash "Extreme Fresh" this is written in black writing.  At the bottom of the label is a mint green section of the label which contains a few facts about the mouthwash written in a slightly darker green and in much smaller writing so it does not stand out as much as the rest of the writing on the label on the front of the bottle.

The back of the bottle has a plain white label on it containing all of the information you need to know about the product, this includes facts about the product, ingredients, directions for use, tips for healthier gums and teeth and warnings, this is all clearly set out under headings making it easy to read and follow.

       The Mouthwash
The Asda Protect Mouthwash Extreme Fresh is basically a transparent mid green liquid, it has quite a strong mint flavour to it, the strength of the mint fragrance isn't too strong but strong enough to give you the impression that it is actually going to work.  This mouthwash is designed to leave your mouth feeling clean and fresh, it is said to help prevent against cavities and plaque as well as strength and re-mineralise tooth enamel, this mouthwash is beneficial to you in these ways for 12 hours, it is also recognised by the British Dental Health Foundation as being useful in dental health care.

When it comes to mouthwash I don't like something so watery that its just like minty water, however I do not like something so strong that it feels like it is burning my mouth, personally Id rather something in between.  When I first tried Protect Mouthwash Extreme Fresh I was pleased to discover that this was the case, the strength of the minty flavour was just right, strong enough to feel like it was doing some good but not so strong that it feels like the skin is being burnt from the inside of my mouth, I would definitely say that the taste of the mouthwash is pleasant.

       Directions for Use
The directions for using the Protect Mouthwash Extreme Fresh are standard for most mouthwashes, you simply wash your mouth out with one capful of undiluted mouthwash every morning and evening and as needed throughout the day.  I do tend to follow the directions for this product although I do feel a capful is a bit too much so I tend to have a little bit less to ensure that I don't accidentally swallow any, however this is my personal preference.

      Warnings
The warnings (or cautions as they are labelled on the bottle) again are standard for this type of product, they include* Do not swallow (this is written in capital letters to make it stand out)* Not recommended for use by children* Keep out of reach from children

Tips for Healthier Teeth and Gums
This is another of the sections on the back of the Protect Mouthwash Extreme Fresh, this section includes a few facts to use along side the mouthwash to keep your mouth healthier, these include
      * Brush your teeth at least twice a day
      * Floss regularly
      * Rise with mouthwash to help protect against plaque and cavities and strengthen tooth enamel
      * Dentists recommend you change your toothbrush every 3 months
      * Visit your dentist as often as recommended It is recommended that these steps are followed in order help protect your teeth and gums and keep them in the healthiest condition  possible for as long as possible.

       Price and Availability
The Protect Mouthwash Extreme Fresh is only available from Asda as it is one of their own brand products, the 500ml bottle costs just £1.00, personally I thought this was an excellent price for this product, a bottle of mouthwash this size lasts me around a couple of weeks, maybe a little longer so it is very good value for money.

       My Opinion
I have nearly used up my bottle of Protect Mouthwash Extreme Fresh and I have been very pleased with it.  Because the mouthwash was so cheap I did wonder what the quality would be like, however I do think it is of an excellent quality, I use the mouthwash everyday and afterwards my mouth feels extremely clean and fresh and it gives me fresh breath as well which is long lasting, it is not the sort of mouthwash that leaves you with fresh breath for a few minutes and then wears off, it really does last well.  This product is something that both me and my husband use and he too has said how well this product works.  I would definitely purchase this product again in the future and would recommend it to anyone.

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      .

I like to keep a bottle of Mouthwash in the house for those quick freshen up moments when you are in a hurry and although perhaps could be doing with Brushing your teeth, but can't spare the odd 5 minutes to do so. I have tried a few different ones - from the more expensive ones to even the basic brands and most of them have been good.

This bottle comes in a 500ml bottle and I paid only £1 for it. This was on offer and i'm not sure of the right price of this. I don't think it is much more expensive that this price though.

The bottle for this looks alright. Just a simple plastic bottle with a label on the front and back and you can see the light blue liquid through the bottle. You use this in the usual way where you measure the Liquid into the lid and just drink it from there. Just swill this around in your mouth for about 30 seconds (well that's how long I swill it round for) and then just spit this out.

This Mouthwash is quite strong and pretty Minty. Once you have spat this out the Minty tastes linger for a good while, and I know from using some of the cheaper brands that the Minty taste that lingers can be a bit sickly, this one is not bad as I don't feel the need to rinse my mouth with Water after using the Wash (which defeats the purpose of the mouthwash doesn't it?) The flavouring of this is more a Peppermint instead of a Spearmint in my view, which I prefer.

This claims to work for up to 12 hours, but i've never paid attention to the timescales. I can taste the Minty taste for a few hours afterwards though and this does keep my mouth nice and fresh.

A good Mouthwash which does a good job and a good price

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

A reasonable mouthwash product from Asda.

I usually do my grocery shopping online, and this means that from time to time I end up with 'replacement' items that have been sent in place of an item that I have ordered which is out of stock on the day of my grocery delivery. This is how I came to try out the "Asda Protect Mouthwash Extreme Fresh" as it was sent in place of another Asda mouthwash I had ordered from the well known supermarket.

I have found that premium branded mouthwash products have really seemed to increase their prices of late, and this has led to me paying over £2 for a 500ml bottle which does not seem to last particularly long in my house. For this reason, I have recently opted to try out some more 'basic' mouthwash products - usually a supermarket 'own brand' product, and see how they fare in comparison to more well-known branded mouthwashes. I have now tried several Asda mouthwashes and one or two from Tesco too.

The bottle of "Asda Protect Mouthwash Extreme Fresh" mouthwash is on a par with most other mouthwash products that I buy regularly, and is 500ml in size. The normal price for the bottle is only £1, which make the product considerably better value than many 'bigger branded' mouthwash products that are available.

The bottle is made of clear plastic which can be recycled. I can see the mouthwash liquid through the plastic which is a pleasant pale blue colour. The liquid is not at all thick as you would expect. There is a plastic lid on top of the bottle which is a long shape and this is designed to enable the lid to double as a drinking cap to pour the mouthwash into your mouth.

I should point out too that the product's cap has a sort of 'safety' mechanism in its design, so you need to squeeze and twist the lid to remove it. I assume this is for child-safety reasons. I would also state that I have limited mobility in my hands and at times I do struggle to open the cap if it has been replaced tightly - which is the way it has been designed to be replaced. I won't be deducting any points from the product's overall rating however, as this is a problem that affects me personally and the majority of people would probably have little or no problem in removing and replacing the cap, but it may be worth bearing in mind if you suffer from arthritis or similar problems, and have limited strength in your hands.

The Asda Protect Mouthwash Extreme Fresh is very easy to use. All I need to do is pour half a capful of mouthwash into the plastic lid and swirl the undiluted liquid around my mouth for a short time. I have not found that this particular mouthwash is very strong and over-powering, nor does it make my tongue feel uncomfortable or feel as though the liquid is catching in my throat as I am using it. These are significant problems I have come across with some mouthwash products I have used in the past as I find some of them have a very over-powering flavour which I don't like.

I find that the flavour and taste of the Asda Protect Mouthwash Extreme Fresh is more subtle than other mouthwash products I have used before. The flavour of mint in the product is pleasant to use without having an over-powering 'nip' in the flavour which can be too much for me to use at times. I find that the minty flavour feels refreshing to use and it leaves my mouth feeling clean and fresh after use.

I feel too that my overall dental health will benefit from the use of this Asda mouthwash as it contains fluoride and will help protect against tooth decay, cavities and plaque. The label on the front of the bottle claims that the product has a "12 hour benefit" which would suggest to me that the effects from using the product will last for up to 12 hours. I'm not sure whether this statement is true or not, and I tend to brush my teeth at least three times during the day (where possible) so I don't feel the need to rely on this mouthwash to provide any sort of 'lasting effects'. The "12 hour benefit" claim would not make me pick this product over any other either, as I tend to think that such claims are a bit of a marketing ploy, but maybe that's just me.

Overall, I thought that the "Asda Protect Mouthwash Extreme Fresh" mouthwash worked quite well and was easy and quite pleasant to use. I wouldn't say it's the best oral hygiene product that I have ever used, but neither would I have any problem with buying it again in the future as I thought it performed well and served its purpose.

There is a whole range of Asda oral hygiene items available to buy in-store in Asda supermarkets. You can also buy Asda products online at www.asda.com.
