Boots Expert Disposable Dental Flossers
Advantages: removes plaque and food debris, easy to use, healthier teeth and gums
Disadvantages: may irritate gums and make them bleed at first.
Like many other people I hate visiting the dentist, how-ever I go every 6 months for check-ups and to ensure my teeth and gums are healthy. Although my gums don't bleed when I brush them the dentist has always advised me to floss my teeth daily to help prevent the build-up of plaque. Every time I go to the dentist my teeth need scaling and she advised me that using floss can prevent this and it will also help to prevent gum disease. In the past I have tried using the floss that you dispense and wrap around your fingers, how-ever I can never seem to get to the back teeth which mean these one's always get left out. After my most recent visit to the dentist and having to have a filling done she again reminded me to floss every day. I decided to visit my local boots store to see what dental floss they sold.
~ Why should I Floss ~
My dentist has always told me that I should floss my teeth. Flossing helps to dislodge food from between your teeth and it can also reduce gum disease and bad breath by removing plaque that forms along the gum line. It's suggested that you floss at least once a day and this is best before going to bed. You can chose to either floss before or after brushing, it doesn't make any difference. Flossing also removes the film of bacteria that lies in between your teeth, before it can harden to become plaque. Flossing may irritate your gums at first and they may bleed, how-ever the more you floss the less likely your gums will bleed and they will become tougher and you run less risks of gum disease and the build-up of plaque.
~ The Flossers ~
The disposable flossers come in a clear plastic bag which is sealed. Each bag contains 30 flossers and is designed to quickly and easily clear away traces of food and plaque. The special design means it's easy to get to the hard to reach places. The flossers are made from white plastic and the actual dental floss is approximately 1.5cm long. Also on the flosser is a point which can be used as a toothpick to help remove traces of food in between your teeth. These flosses don't have any flavour to them; how-ever you can get minty flavoured ones. I don't particularly like the taste of mint which I why I chose the non-flavoured one's. To use the flosser simply guide it between your teeth using a gentle sawing motion, run carefully up and down. Gently use the pick to remove any stubborn debris. Always throw away the flosser after use. It's common that your gums may bleed when you start to use floss. If it does continue you should consult your dentist as this could be the early signs of gum disease.
~ Price/Availability ~
I purchased these from my local Boots store for £1.99 which I think is very reasonable.
~ Using the Flosser ~
I used the flosser as instructed on the back of the packaging. I slowly guided the flosser in between my teeth using a gentle sawing motion up and down the teeth. The flossers were easy to hold due to the shape of them. I started using the flossers the day after going to the dentist so my teeth didn't bleed when using these. The floss glided in between my teeth well and once I had done the bottom row of teeth I could see there was some plaque on the floss. I decided to through this away and use a new flosser for the top teeth. The flosser glided in between my teeth well without any problems. After using the flosser on the top teeth there was again a little plaque on the actual floss. I threw away the flosser and then cleaned my teeth.
~ Overall Opinion ~
These flossers are fantastic if like me you just can't get the hang of using the dental floss with your fingers. In terms of value for money I think they are rather good, although I do need to use 2 of these when flossing rather than one as I find that after using one there can be a fair amount of plaque on the floss and some of the strands can become a little loose. The flossers do a fantastic job of helping to get rid of any build-up of plaque and food debris in between your teeth. I will continue to use the flossers as part of my dental routine and I will purchase these again when I run out. The bag the flossers come in is resealable which is great and it makes then perfect to take with you if you are going away. I highly recommend these to others who find flossing difficult and I'm going to give them 4 out of 5 stars.
