I was not very fond of mouthwashes until I started living on my own. I thought that they didn't do much to my oral hygiene, but I never really gave them a chance because my parents never bought one. The only brand I had ever tried was Listerine, which is not only quite expensive but also very strong for me, and I did not like using it at all. It was more like a chore every time I had to use it.
One day I was shopping as usual, and I found this Colgate mouthwash. It seemed to be on sale so I thought I'd give it a try. It comes in a transparent plastic bottle, and the actual liquid is red in color. When I went home I took a sniff trying to see what it smelled like. It was a nice minty flavor, kinda better than the Listerine ones.
On the back there are also instructions on how to use it. Apparently, you fill up the cap halfway, and swirl the liquid in your mouth for 30 seconds. You spit, but don't rinse. They seem to recommend using this on mornings and nights right after brushing. However, I remember using it only after my morning routine, for an extra fresh breath.
So, how does it actually do? I really liked the fact that it was not very strong, I could easily hold it for 30 seconds without getting a burning sensation which I hate. It tasted like mint which was felt fresh and rejuvenating. After finishing the process, my mouth felt clean and fresh.
I'd say it's a great choice if you are looking for a cheaper, nice mouthwash.
I'd always been a bit sceptical about mouthwashes having any real benefit to teeth and gums. However, after suffering from enflamed taste buds I was advised by a dentist to use mouthwash. Doing a weekly shop I'm always on the lookout for offers. I came across a buy 1 get 1 free offer on this Colgate mouthwash. After reading the bottle I decided to buy this product. I choose the Cool mint and Original flavours. It says on the bottle that it's developed and clinically tested by dentists. So seeing this statement I felt reassured that this was a decent product.
Also on the bottle are the following statements:
* Clinically proven 12 hour protection against bacteria & plaque.
* Strengthens gums & protects against gum problems.
* With fluoride to fight cavities & strengthen enamel.
* Cleans even in the hard to reach places.
* Great refreshing taste for a long lasting fresh breath.
You simply pour the liquid into the cap to get the required amount. A line on the cap indicates this. Then thoroughly rinse around the mouth and expel. It does say on the bottle to gargle as well although I don't usually do this.
I found the mint flavour one to have a very pleasant taste but the Original one was a bit of a strange taste and smell, I didn't like it, but that's just personal taste. Because the cap is used to pour the liquid into when measuring it I did find that when I replace the cap a small bit of liquid drips down the bottle. I rinse this now after each use.
Mouthwash isn't something I use on a daily basis, perhaps just a few times per week. However it has changed my mind about mouthwashes now as this product did help my inflamed taste buds after a few days use. I think this mouthwash is alright but I've also tried other brands that I feel did just as good a job. I think what really made me buy this was mainly due to the bold claim on the front of the bottle about it being clinically tested by dentists. I think this would be a reason that the majority of people would buy products like this.
Overall I think this is a quite a good mouthwash. It leaves my mouth feeling fresh and clean. I would buy it again but just not the Original flavour. This is red one and for me the taste of this wasn't great and I think the colour of it puts me off slightly as well.
This review refers to the peppermint version of this mouthwash which is a light blue coloured liquid rather than the pink as illustrated in the picture. Its not my normal brand and was an impulse purchase whilst travelling.
Colgate Plax is labelled as a "Multi Protection" mouthwash which is claimed to be developed and clinically tested by dentists to provide "12 hour protection against bacteria & plaque for long lasting fresh breath".
It looks much like my usual brand of mouthwash, but upon smelling it does have a less harsh aroma, a slighly sweet scent very similar to a chewing gum.
The cap unsecrews with ease, just a slight squeeze applied to the edges but nothing like the pressure you would apply to a safety cap. I notice that the cap is a fair bit larger than my usual brand. Looking inside you can see what looks like a normal screw cap, similar to what you would have on a fizzy drinks bottle, but around this is a larger cap which serves as the drinking cup, its about the same size as a shot glass. I quite liked this arrangement as it meant that the bottle had a much more positive fit but with the added convenience of the drinking cup.
The smell of the liquid turned out to be very representative of its taste, much milder than I was used to and almost plesant tasting with the peppermint flavour. I can imagine children loving this taste, which may not be a good thing as the cap unscrews quite easily.
Another comment I really have to make is in regard to gurgling. After my usual rinse around I like to gurgle the wash in my throat for a few seconds. But this caused the liquid to quickly become very foamy unlike any mouthwash I have used before, it just kind of fizzed and bubbled and was almost impossible to gurgle.
As far as the freshness goes it seems to work, leaving a fresh minty taste in the mouth. But for me that was not really enough, its mildness will appeal to many I am sure but that harsh tingling feel in the mouth of my normal brand does feel like it sanitises my mouth better and it gives me the added gargleability I like.
