Advantages: Great for sensitive teeth, relieves pain quickly

Disadvantages: A bit expensive

I suffer from very sensitive teeth and always seem to be having trouble with them, despite the fact that I brush twice a day, floss regularly and use a very good mouthwash. On a recent visit to the dentist, I complained that one of the metal fillings in my mouth was causing me immense pain when I ate hot or cold food or drank hot or cold liquids. The dentist explained to me that this is because metal conducts heat and that every time I ate something of an extreme temperature, it was hitting my nerve and causing this pain. In his surgery, my dentist had a huge tub of small sample sized tubes of Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief Toothpaste and he recommended that I take one to use on the area around the filling.

The toothpaste comes in a white tube that can be stood upright on its flat screw top. The tube has the red 'Colgate' logo on the front along with a small illustration of a tooth and a brief description of the product. Instructions for use are printed on the reverse of the tube: it is recommended that the toothpaste is applied to a toothbrush and used much like any other regular toothpaste twice a day. Alternatively, the toothpaste can be massaged into the sensitive area for one minute using your finger. It says that this should only be done once a week or less, but my dentist recommended that I do it up to twice a day, depending on the pain that I was suffering from.

For the first few days, I used this toothpaste by rubbing a small amount into the area around my filling around twice a day, usually after brushing. I have to admit that the pain relief was instant. The aching pain in my tooth disappeared and I was able to drink hot and cold liquids (such as tea and iced water) for around an hour after application. After this period, the effectivness of the toothpaste appeared to subside a little, but if I was in need of pain relief, reapplying the product did the trick.

I have recently started suffering from sensitivity in a lower tooth and have started to use this toothpaste in this area also by rubbing in the toothpaste using my little finger. I must admit that I don't feel the need to rub in the toothpaste for a minute as the instructions recommend; a few seconds seems to suffice.

I have used many toothpastes in the past that are used to relieve sensitivity and tenderness, but none have been even almost as close as this brand. This toothpaste relieves pain instantly and tastes very minty, which is always a plus. When I had run out of toothpaste that my dentist had given me, I decided to buy another tube from Boots. A 35ml tube costs £1.79 (they do have a 3 for 2 offer on dental care in Boots at the moment, though!) I do think that this is quite expensive compared to other brands, but it is definitely worth it.

I usually use this toothpaste simply to treat the sensitive areas in my mouth, and I wouldn't use it as a standard toothpaste with which to clean my teeth as I think it's a little expensive. However, if you suffer from sensitive teeth, this is a brand that I would recommend without a doubt.

Summary: Definitely worth a try
