Listerine Cool Mint
Advantages: Effective at reducing plaque and freshening breath
Disadvantages: Very strong tasting and expensive
If the sign of an effective mouthwash is that it blows you away when you use it, then Listerine Cool Mint is one effective mouthwash.
The thing is because Listerine Cool Mint is so tingly and strong in flavour is does give the impression it works better than other mouthwashes.
Mouthwash is now an essential step in my dental regime. I brush my teeth, floss and gargle with mouthwash. If I miss out any of the steps my mouth doesn't appear as clean. There are a whole host of mouthwashes available from all the major toothbrush and paste manufacturers and Listerine is one of the most expensive on the market at around £3.99 a bottle.
It does last a good month even when used twice a day but then most mouthwashes come in large enough bottles to do this.
The liquid is blue to suggest the cool mint flavour and also a freshness and cleanness. The mouthwash promises to reduce plaque twice as effectively as brushing alone.
The mouthwash does contain a tiny percentage of alcohol so it is not suitable for use by all the family. From its taste I would say it has a much higher alcohol content than any other mouthwash. When you take a small amount, by pouring it into the lid of the bottle and from there into your mouth, your mouth is set on fire. It is similar to taking a shot of pure alcohol. Your tongue and cheeks tingle with it. There is a hint of mint taste there but it does little to ease the fire of the mixture.
It becomes a challenge to hold the mouthwash in your mouth for any significant amount of time and even when you have spat it out the tingling remains for about a minute afterwards. But as I have said earlier this all makes you feel you are using something heavy duty and effective that is going to strip any plaque and other nasties from your mouth. My teeth certainly feel squeaky clean after use, my mouth refreshed if slightly burnt, and my breath fresh.
Listerine has come up with Listerine Zero which comes without the alcohol but because it is milder it does not appear to be as effective and is even more expensive despite being alcohol free.
Given the choice I would choose Listerine mouthwash over the others as it is strangely reassuring to have your socks blown off by your mouthwash as it can't help but make you think it is doing a good job.
Summary: A mouthwash which is as strong tasting as it is effective.
