I knew I needed a mouthwash as over the years I've rarely used one. About a month ago I noticed that some plaque started to form on my teeth and just brushing wasn't removing it. My parents have always used Listerine and my dad suggest I try out the total care because it has always worked for him. Before purchasing the normal sized Listerine I decided to go into my local boots and buy the mini version to test out to make sure I liked it and does the job to help improve my teeth. I used the mini version up in just a few days and noticed that not only had freshness in my mouth improve but my plaque on my teeth had started to reduce. The day away I finished the mini version I went and purchased the full sized version of Listerine. This product has helped my teeth so much and I would recommend this to everyone.
I regularly use mouthwash as it helps to kill bacteria and also leaves you with very fresh smelling breath. I recently got my hands on some Listerine Total Care Anticavity mouthwash (yup, dug deep in my pocket). Although a little pricey, I have noticed this mouthwash really working and it feels great (although slightly painful too) when using it.
This mouthwash comes in a transparent bottle, which is either 250ml or 500ml. I tend to buy the 500ml one as it lasts longer and is cheaper in comparison (around £4.40 compared to £2.50 for double the volume). I do still find this a little pricey, but it does last a while if you don't overdo the volume you take each time you rinse! This mouthwash has several claims:
* Kills 99.9% bacteria
* Reduces plaque
* Maintains healthy gums
* Strengthens teeth against decay
* Prevents tartar helping to keep teeth white
* Freshens breath
It also has an 'anti-cavity' claim which is stated on the front of the bottle. I do question the efficacy of this claim, as all of their studies were only laboratory studies - so who knows if the effects they claim are as good in humans? Clear effects that I have noticed from using this mouthwash include the breath freshening and teeth strengthening. I have had some minor cavities filled in the past, but they have been kept under control since I have been using this.
I use this mouthwash just once a day although they recommend twice a day. I think this is better than nothing and prolongs its lifetime before you must buy another. I used to measure out a small amount in the cap before gurgling it, but now I estimate how much I rinse with whilst taking a small swig. Giving it a gargle around my mouth, I immediately am faced with an overwhelming minty freshness, which gets quite strong and leaves your mouth with a sting. Although slightly shocking at first, I like this feeling as it reassures you that something should be working!
It certainly leaves me with fresh breath, which easily lasts throughout the day. I have had no problems with cavities since using this toothpaste, leaving myself and my dentist happy. There are no negative effects I have noticed from taking this.
In summary this is a mouthwash worth investing in - especially if you have had problems with cavities. This mouthwash has seemed to strengthen my teeth in some way and I have had no pain or problems since, and the dentist is happy! In conjunction with a good toothpaste, using this once a day helps to keep my breath fresh, mouth clean and teeth strong. I would highly recommend it despite the hefty price to pay.
I am one of those people who tends to buy the cheap brands as a general rule, and this is the same for my purchases of mouthwash. Why pay £3 for a bottle of Listerine, when you can buy a much cheaper 'unbranded' bottle for around the £1 mark?
However I do like to look out for the offers, and so a few months ago when I saw the whole range of Listerine mouthwashes had been reduced down to £1:50 in my local Morrison's store, I decided it was worth giving it a try for just the extra 50p.
Listerine (made by Johnson and Johnson Ltd of maidenhead), are one of the most famous brands when it comes to mouthwash, and looking along the shelves there were literally dozens of different coloured solutions, all aimed at different areas of antibacterial protection for the mouth.
I ended up covering all bases, by opting for the Listerine 'Total Care', which is described on the bottle as having 6 benefits in 1! These 6 benefits are as follows:
Maintains healthy gums
Strengthens teeth against decay
Prevents tartar to keep teeth naturally white
kills up to 99.9% oral bacteria
up to 24 hour fresh breath protection
Listerine Total Care is a purple coloured solution, which comes in a 500 ml clear plastic (recyclable) bottle. The flavour is based around 'clean mint', and this Listerine formulation has been approved by the British Dental Health Foundation.
The purple plastic lid at the top of the bottle is designed to stop children from opening it, with the usual tab design on the lid that needs squeezing to get the lid to turn off. This is critical in my opinion, as I could imagine that small children would be eager to get this bottle open to get a drink of the mysterious and magical looking purple potion inside it.
The directions for use are pretty standard for any mouthwash, but Listerine state that 20ml or 4 teaspoons equivalent should be poured into the mouth, and then rinsed around the teeth and gums for approx 30 seconds before spitting out the solution.
So, is it worth the high price tag?
Upon opening the bottle there is an instant strong smell of mint, mixed with a kind of germaline smell which is extremely powerful!
Each time I use the mouthwash, and pour the required amount into my mouth, I always end up in shock at just how powerful this formulation really is. The first few seconds feel kind of similar to the cheaper brands that I have used in the past, but after perhaps 5 - 10 seconds the insides of my mouth and gums start to feel hot, and a mild burning sensation starts to creep in, which just gets stronger and stronger, until I can literally no longer take the pain, so I have to quickly spit it out into the sink. It really feels like this powerful stuff is working like crazy at the plaque, bacteria and tartar, and my breath is always smelling very strongly of the fresh, minty / germaline smell for ages afterwards - although the 24 hour fresh breath is a little bit of an exaggeration, unless you perhaps eat or drink nothing for 24 hours after using the mouthwash!
After spitting out the solution my teeth do feel really clean, and it is kind of like they have just had some sort of thorough clean by the dentist! The solution is that powerful, that if I return to the sink a few hours later, even if it has been rinsed away well, there is still a very strong smell of the solution rising up from the plug hole of the sink, almost as though some strong disinfectant has just been poured down the sink!
So in conclusion, it is a lot more expensive than the cheaper brands, but it certainly does a far better job in terms of fresh breath, and plaque reduction. However I could not justify paying out £3 regularly for the Listerine mouthwash, and so I generally will keep to the cheaper stuff.
I will though keep an eye out for when this is next on offer, and I will be happy to pay the little extra for such a powerful bottle of mouthwash, especially when I feel my mouth and teeth could do with a proper workout!
I should also point out that the bottle has a couple of warnings on it that should be considered, in that this mouthwash is not suitable for children under 12 years of age, and that this mouthwash should not be diluted, swallowed, or 'swigged' from the bottle (believe me, you would have to have a mouth made of Asbestos to do this!).
Thanks for reading.

It is very important to me to have good dental hygiene and becomes more important the older I get, everyday I brush my teeth twice a day even three times when I can and I floss regularly but in order to keep my mouth really clean I also use mouthwash. I have been using Listerine for years now twice a day after brushing as recommended and have recently started using Listerine Total Care Antibacterial Mouthwash, and I am extremely happy with the results.
maintains healthy gums
strengthens teeth against decay
prevents tartar keeping teeth naturally white
kills 99.9% of bacteria
keeps breath fresh for 24 hours
Sounds good to me and as it is approved by the British dental health foundation this is a product we can trust, this Listerine comes in a clear see through bottle and the mouthwash itself is a light purple colour, it looks really appealing which is probably why I first decided to give it a go.
I buy the Fresh mint flavour but there are other flavours available, when you take off the cap it does have a very strong smell and when you put some in your mouth for the first time it has a very strong minty taste, the first couple of days of using I must admit this Listerine really burnt my mouth but after using for a couple of days this burning sensation went away, I think it was just doing its magic and attacking any bacteria in my mouth, I have now been using this product for a couple of months and I can say my mouth feels one hundred percent cleaner than it did before using it.
The instructions on the bottle recommends that you use twice a day after brushing and that you should leave it in your mouth for thirty seconds before spitting it out, after I have used it and spat it out I can still feel it covering my gums, it almost feels like a shield protecting my mouth.
This is a product which has worked wonderfully for me, my mouth feels much better than it did, it really is a great product for keeping your mouth strong and healthy and for anybody having problems with there gums and mouth, bad breath or just wanting to keep there mouths healthy I highly recommend trying Listerine Total Care Antibacterial Mouthwash.
You can pick this product up in many places such as Boots, Chemists or Superdrug but I usually just get my in the local supermarket, it cost me around £2.50 for a 500ml bottle which will easily last the week but can also be bought in a smaller bottle for a little bit cheaper.
As I have stated in previous reviews I suffer from very sensitive teeth so finding a good mouthwash so so important to me.
This mouthwash is sold in my local supermarket for under £3.00 and claims that it will reduce plaque while maintaining healthy gums and to strengthen your teeth against decay and keep you fresh for 24 hours. It comes in a see through bottle so you can see the liquid inside. It has a screw on top which is child safe.
The idea of this mouthwash is to use it after you have brushed your teeth, you pour the liquid into the lid and swirl it around your mouth until you are ready to spit it out.
I really liked this mouthwash, I wouldnt say its the best tasting one I have used but it certainly works well. My teeth felt smooth and squeeky clean afterwards, it didnt cause me any sensitivity and it kept me feeling fresh all day. So all in all I would recommend this product!
Listerine is one of the most well known brands in the mouthwash market and for good reason. It has built up a reputation based on its totally fresh feel after use. The mint variety definitely lives up to this. Only half a cap, to one cap is needed and it should be swirled round in the mouth for no longer than a minute ideally. I personally found it felt a bit too powerful in my mouth, in terms of mint flavour and it actually felt like it was burning a little. However this sensation does pass after the mouthwash is gone and you wash your mouth with water. It leaves your mouth feeling thoroughly clean and if you run your tongue over your teeth they feel smooth and cleansed. Listerine is also a great cure for bad breath all day long, which is what many people actually use it for.
Listerine should be a part of your dental care routine if possible as it does reach hard to reach places inside the mouth which cannot be reached by brushing and it eliminates a lot of plaque which otherwise would be left behind. This generally benefits oral hygiene and I used it as it was personally recommended to my by my dental hygienist. The only drawback is the price, if only to be used by yourself then it maybe affordable but if shared by the whole family it will be used up very quickly and it could become a costly addition to the weekly shop. If it is affordable to you then I would definitely recommend the product.
Looking after my teeth is important to me and the fact that I'm nearly 29 and have no fillings is something that I am really proud of. I brush, floss and use a mouthwash twice daily and my most recent mouthwash that I tried was the Listerine Total Care Antibacterial Mouthwash.
What does the product do?
The product promises to clean and protect the mouth and to offer you six other benefits. It claims that it will reduce plaque while maintaining healthy gums and to strengthen your teeth against decay. It also claims to help to prevent tartar to keep the teeth naturally white and promises to give 99.9% of bacteria as well as keeping the breath fresh for up to 24 hours. It has been approved by the British Dental Health Foundation so you know that you can trust the product.
How do you use the product?
The product is to be used after you have brushed your teeth. It is most effective when you use it every morning and every evening. You are directed to pour 4 to 5 teaspoons of the liquid in a glass which is 20ml. I just pour some into the lid as using a glass seems a bit fussy to me! You need to swish it around your mouth for 30 seconds and the spit it out.
Packaging and Price
The product comes contained within a plastic bottle which is see through and you can see the pinky coloured liquid inside. The front sticker has a hologram on the front and it does look eye catching and pretty. The bottle has a black lid and you pinch the sides of the lid and twist it in order to open the bottle which stops children being able to open it. The product will cost you about £2.50 for 500ml of the mouthwash and it can be bought from stores such as Boots, Superdrug and Wilkinsons, large supermarkets and also from a range of online websites.
I chose the Fresh Mint flavour. I'm not sure if other flavours are available in the collection. When you remove the lid, you can smell the product straight. It has a very smell almost like smelling salts with a minty kick. It certainly wakes you up in the morning! I pour a capful into the lid and then pour it into my mouth after brushing my teeth. It does burn my mouth because it's so strong and I know I find it really difficult to hold the product in my mouth for 30 seconds. It feels quite uncomfortable to me and I don't enjoy using the product.
I know my boyfriend doesn't have the same problem as me here and he actually enjoys using the product so maybe I have a sensitive mouth. It doesn't hurt my teeth, it's just an unpleasant sensation. When I spit it out, my mouth still tingles a bit and you can still taste it for a few minutes after. It does make your breath smell really fresh for quite a while, much longer than with brushing alone. I think 24 hours may be pushing it a bit though. My teeth do seem to be in a better condition after using this twice daily for a while although I can see a huge difference. I think it improves the health of the mouth rather than the appearance.
All in all, although I find the experience of using this one uncomfortable, I know it much be doing a good job because there's no way that bacteria would survive that process! It leaves my breath much fresher and for longer than brushing alone. I am happy with this product but next time I'll see if I find a slightly more gentle mouth wash. As I said my boyfriend is more than happy with it so maybe I just need to 'man up'!
I am a stickler for oral hygiene brushing my teeth twice a day with both a manual and electric toothbrush, followed by floss and a mouthwash. I have used a variety of different brands as I often buy the brand which is on offer at the time; occassionally I do get suckered into a good title such as 'whitening'.
Listerine itself dates back to 1879 first being used as a surgical antiseptic moving through to being a cleaner, cure for gonorrhoea and then to 1992 as a mouthwash and what you know it as today.
This particular Listerine type promises to kill 97% of germs in the mouth (after brushing), reduce plaque, maintain healthy gums and strengthen teeth.
After regular use I have found that there is a distinct burning sensation after each rinse; at first I was lead to believe that this may have been some sort of positive sign meaning that the mouthwash was doing its magic. But after a couple of weeks I began to realise that this effect then lead to a dry mouth and a sore tongue; I think that the method of removing germs meant a removal of everything else in the mouth!
In general the listerine range are quite expensive notching up around £6 for a large bottle. Personally I would not recommend this but if you have an asbestos mouth then by all means give it a try.
I have been using Listerine Oral Care for several years. I have found that Listerine not only helps to prevent cavities it restores enamel and strenghtens teeth. It also kills bad breath and germs. After using Listerine my whole mouth feels clean and fresh. My dental hygienist has noticed that by using Listerine Oral Care I have less plaque build up and consequently no cavities which has resulted in my not needing to any dental treatment for years. There are several types of Listerine mouth washes from the original strong version to the mild version without alcohol. In order not to get used to one type of Listerine I try a different strength whenever I buy a new bottle. My Mother who is 89 years old has also being using Listerine and introduced to the product. This is a product that I would recommend to all my friends without hesitation.
In a nutshell, I will never be going back to this mouthwash.
From the first day of using it, my mouth felt dry after using it. However, my mouth did feel clean and fresh thanks to the very intense taste and smell. I could tell I had used this mouthwash for hours after - but this is not necessarily a good thing.
I used this mouthwash once a day, in the morning, for a few days, throughout the day I had the slightly unpleasant dry mouth feeling. I tried combating this by drinking more water but this didn't seem to help. I could deal with this if it was doing good for my mouth hygiene I though. However, after a few days not only did my mouth become dry but my tongue also became sore and the skin inside my mouth appeared to peel slightly. I am unsure whether I was allergic to some of the ingredients in the mouthwash but I stopped using it, with most of the bottle left and reverted to my old mouthwash to make the pain stop.
*Also on ciao
I have never really used mouth wash I thought that it did the same as tooth paste really but I went to the dentist as I had swollen gums which bled when I brushed my teeth he told me to use lister one mouth was as it is an antiseptic mouth was it did happen straight away but after a few weeks I did start to notice a difference. I am now a big fan and I use the stuff daily. When you first use it tho the taste feels really strong and it tells you to swill in your mouth for 30 mins which I admit I could not do but since using it daily I can do it :). It does definitely make ya teeth feel cleaner and ya mouth fresher and leaves a fresh taste in your mouth. Also the product is not expensive which is always a bonus
I have used this product many times before and have been very happy with it every time, the taste can be quite strong, but I personally like this as it does give me a feel cleaner and fresher feeling that I cant get with any other that I have used previously. it can be a little on the expensive side, but it is very good value for the money as you only need a small amount as like i said before it can be very strong. both my husband and my two children find this product easy and satisfactory to use and all agree it is the best. I have had many complements about how fresh my breath smells even later on in the day, this product also makes me feel good about myself and not have to worry about my breath, and after using it in the morning you feel set for the day.
Over the years I've used various different brands of mouthwash tending to try them when they are on special offer however somehow I always come back to the old faithful Listerine.
Its major drawback is that it tends to be very expensive but for me personally is the only brand that makes my mouth feel squeaky clean after I've used it.
Granted it is very strong to the taste and to the feel and can get a bit of a burning sensation when you use it, but for effectiveness it is the only brand for me. The purple one is not my favourite of the flavours though as it tends to be a bit overpowering and I do tend to prefer the older ranges for taste. For the less brave I'd suggest using the sensitive option as this has a much less harsh taste and still gives you that listerine clean feeling.
I thought I was going to get a great mouthwash considering I have had good luck with other mouthwashes of this brand. I was just not to satified with this product. I have fairly sensitive teeth but nothing not too manageble. I found that this one was really strong! The mint flavor did seem to last a long time though. But after I ate again this taste was gone. I would like to use mouthwash twice daily. I think overall it would benefit my teeth. I hope to find a mouthwash that is similar to this one just not as stong. The price was good though I did not have to dig too deep into my pcokets.
