      A good mouthwash for kids

My kids are long grown up and have their own kids. I have a six year old grandson who visits and sleeps over frequently so I still buy a lot of child orientated products. My grandsons baby teeth have all fallen out except for two and his adult teeth are growing rapidly. I think it's really important to establish a good oral hygiene regime at a young age to get them used to it before they grow up.

I use mouthwash and my grandson asked to use some but I didn't think he'd really like Oraldine, I know I don't!! I decided to buy him a bottle of his own for next time he stayed. I know Listerine is a good brand and I've used it a lot in the past so when I sas the childrens variety that they've done I decided on that. It comes in two flavours, Mild mint and Berry shield and costs about £2.30 for a 250ml bottle. It's quite pricey but I hoped it would be worth it. I bought the mint flavour for him to try.

The bottle is a good design, it limits how much you can pour out in one go so you can measure the right amount into the lid before gargling. The bottle design is child friendly with the mouthwash being a nice green colour and the big picture of a tooth and magnifying glass on the front.

I helped my grandson to do it, much to his disapproval because he's a big boy now as he would say. I explained how to use it and showed him by using mine. I really didn't want him to swallow it and end up being scared to use it again. He took a little sip, quick gargle and spat the first time and over time he has got used to swishing it around his mouth and teeth so it's more effective. He hasn't swallowed any yet which is good!

I tried the mouthwash, for consumer review purposes of course!! It has a nice minty flavour but is isn't nearly as strong or tingly as the Adult version of Listerine. It leaves a nice fresh feeling in the mouth and when you spit, it tints any little bits of food or anything you missed when brushing green so you can see that it is working.

I think this product is brilliant and gets kids used to the brushing and mouthwash regime at an early age. My grandson really likes using it and we're on our third bottle now! I haven't tried the Berry flavoured one yet as I think the minty freshness is a little bit more appealing after brushing. At the minute (14/10/2012) they are on offer at Asda, two bottles for three pound! I'd definitely recommend trying this with your children, aged six and over as it says on the bottle as I think it is very useful and my Grandson really likes it.

If you dislike the 'burning' feeling that listerine/any mouthwash leaves in your mouth, try this!

One thing i actually hate about when i'm brushing my teeth, is that i always miss part of my teeth and i'm always scared of walking out into town or something with stuff on my teeth. So i was recommended on using mouthwash after brushing! In previous years i have tried mouthwashes but i've hated the ones i've tried as they are so strong! Another one i used by listerene was such a strong mint, when i used it i felt like my mouth was burning! So i found this product in asda and thought i'd give it a go.

Ever since i have, I have noticed the difference alot! I've noticed that my breath is mintier, my teeth are whiter and my mouth feels generally alot cleaner! The thing i do love about this mouthwash is that it's designed for kids, Which means the product comes in more milder products so my mouth isn't actually burning when i use it!

I've gone through two bottles of this mouthwash in two months and i have tried two of the flavours. 'Mild mint' and 'Mild berry'. Both of these flavours were pleasant and they were both different colours.

After putting the mouthwash into your mouth and gargling for about a minute, It colours all the plaque left on your teeth to the colour of the mouthwash (eg. mild mint is green). This is quite handy if your unsure if you've properly brushed your teeth or not. Then of course you spit the contents of your mouth into the sink and you will see how much plaque was left on your teeth.

Overall i would say this product is a useful thing to have in your bathroom! and you might aswell try it, and it isn't exactly expensive so you might aswell give it a go!

A great mouthwash just for kids

I try to encourage my kids to have a good dental hygeine routine, which includes eating the right food, avoiding sugary, acidic drinks and brushing twice per day at least. I wanted to take this further by introducing a good quality mouthwash, and using Listerene myself, I decided to try Smart Rinse for my daughter who is 7 years old.

I was a little concerned that she wouldn't be able to get the hang of the rinse and spitting out of the mouthwash, but she's fine with it and we have had no swallowing incidents to date.

Listerene Smart Rinse is available in most supermarkets and chemists and retails at aroung £1.89 for a 250ml bottle. It comes in two flavours, Berry Shield and Mild Mint. My daughter has tried both, but favours the mint. It is suitable for kids over the age of 6 years.

The bottle is a really great design, it is impossible to 'pour' too much mouthwash in to the lid as it has some type of valve that only allows so much to be squeezed into the neck of the bottle. Any extra just drains back in, so its easy to just dispense the correct 10ml amount.

The mouthwash contains fluoride which helps to strengthen teeth and prevent cavities. It also kills bad bacteria, which is proved to be a the biggest cause of plaque and gum disease.

When rinsing with this mouthwash, it attracts the bits that brushing misses, and tints them a green colour, so that when your child spits it into the sink they can see the 'bits' they have missed.

I have found that my daughter takes more pride in her teeth now, and has a regular routine that she enjoys. She also reminds me to use my mouthwash too!

It has improved her teeth immensely, and that is not my opinion, it is that of the dentist. On second last visit, she had a few issues with her brushing and the dentist recommended this mouthwash, along with an electric toothbrush. On her return visit the dentist could see a huge improvement, and was happy with her progress.

I would recommend this to anyone with children, it encourages a good sense of oral hygeine at an early age. Once their 'big' teeth are in, they are the ones they need for life, so its good to encourage better tooth care from the outset.

My son suffers with bad breath and you can smell it when he is talking to you so I had to find something that would help him due to I didn't want him picked on at school.

This product is for ages 6+ my son is only 5 but will be turning 6 in 2 months and due to he has lost 6 teeth and is growing his adult teeth through early I decided that he would be able to use this.

        The bottle

This is a 250ml bottle that is in an hour glass shape with a white cap to pour the liquid into. In the bottle is a tube that has a cap in the neck of the bottle that makes sure the liquid doesn't spill out. This tube is a brilliant invention because when you squeeze the bottle the mouthwash goes up the tube and fills the neck, it says to only fill it to the 10ml line and I have tested it and when you squeeze it it does only go to that line, so I have no concerns about my son squeezing too much out. It has the listerine name on the top which I have heard of but until now have never tried any of the products. In big letters it has Smart Rinse in a child friendly writing. It also has a picture of a tooth on the front.

        The Product

This is a green liquid that smells minty. It looks like coloured water but is slightly thicker. It has a minty smell and a mild minty taste to it. It is alcohol and sugar free which is peace of mind for me. It states that it protects against cavities and cleans what brushing teeth misses. This is good because his big teeth are coming through he needs the extra protection and if he does miss some brushing his teeth this will get the bits he misses.

        Instructions

These are easy to understand, you use it twice a day after brushing. you squeeze the bottle and fill to the 10ml line. Pour the liquid into the cap then rinse around the mouth for 60 seconds then spit out the mouthwash. It states that you are to supervise your child which I did do in the begining now he knows how to do it and that he doesn't swallow it I am able to leave him to do himself. It also tells you that you must store it below 30 degrease ours is kept on the ledge away from the window.

        Ingrediants

Aqua, Sorbitol, aroma, phosphoric acid, suralose, cetylpyridinium chloride, sodium floride, menthol, disodium phosphat, cl 15985, cl42090 and contains fluoride.

        Warnings

These are like most products for instance, keep out of reach of children, Not to be used by children under the age of 6, do not use if the seal is broken and if you are using fluoride suppliements consult your dentist. I of course ignored one of the warnings due to my son not being 6 but made the judgement on he is 6 in 2 months and that he has 6 adult teeth coming through which is alot more than his 6 year old step brother.

At the top of the label it states that it contains fluoride which strenghtens teeth and reduces cavities by up to 40% more than brushing alone. This is very interesting information and I know that my childs teeth are being protected. It kills bad bacteria which is a major cause of plaque and gum disease, so I know my sons mouth is well protected. It goes around the whole mouth, reaching teeth and gums and tongue. It attract and tints the bits that brushing misses, showing your child the proof in the sink, we tested this and he saw lots of bubbles in the sink when he spit it out which of course I had to clean up.

        Conclusion

I noticed a considerable change in my sons dental hygine. I have noticed he has fresh breath for most of the day, his teeth look cleaner and there is no bad smell when you are talking to him. He is alot happier knowing that his breath does not smell and enjoys using the mouth wash. He has also learnt alot about his teeth and that his mouth is full of bacteria that the mouthwash kills. I am happy with this product and think it is very safe for children to use. It is a good price at almost £2 and lasts my son almost 2 weeks usingit twice a day. I have noticed that when my step son comes to visit he is also using this because he has found it fun to squeeze the bottle and pour it into the cap. I think this has made brushing and looking after your teeth fun for children rarther than a chore. This can be bought from many places such as boots and Adsa.

        Extra information

This product is made by Johnson and Johnson ltd which is a well known name for childrens products which I think lets parents know that their children are in safe hands because they are a safe name for childrens products. It has a good expiry date that it can be used upto a year this will never last that long if regular use is made. It has all the addresses and web site address for customers who may have any questions or complaints about this product.

DO NOT BUY THIS! I bought this product for my 6 year old and after 4 months of use I noticed that my sons teeth actually looked like he was a smoker with yellowy brown staining on them. I took him to the dentist and she confirmed that it was the mouthwash that had done this!!!! I am quite devastated. My son cleans his teeth twice a day and after he has cleaned them I then clean his teeth too. He has no cavities and our dentist has always commented on his good, hygenic teeth. She has advised that over time the staining should wear away if he eats plenty of hard bread and vegetables like raw carrot. I find it amazing that the bottle carries no warning that staining could occur! I would steer clear of this product!

Really good childrens mouthwash, works really well has a nice taste not to over powering

My children use this mouthwash and they really like it. Ive bought them just about every kids mouthwash and they havent been keen because some are not mint and are berry, and finding a good minty kids mouthwash is harder than it sounds. It cant be to strong but has to taste of something and has to look like mine (everything i have they want) so when i spotted this at our local supermarket i was happy and bonus was that it was listerine! They really enjoy this mouthwash and what i really like about it is when they have used it and spat it out in the sink, the bits that have been missed when brushing . I think is great beacuse it encourages children to brush their teeth really well. (the tinting in this mouthwash is a much better idea that the pink tablets which dye your mouth because that takes forever to wash out.)

Overall i think this mouthwash is great, taste good and works well, it even encourages children to brush their teeth better so they dont have highlights in the sink. I would definatly recommend this mouthwash.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

Good if you don't want an overwhelming mouthwash experience

I wouldn't normally buy a mouthwash that is actually designed for kids, but I was looking for a bottle of mouthwash that would fit into my hand luggage for a coach holiday. I couldn't find any travel-size bottles in my local Boots so I ended up with this as it was midway between travel-size and normal size.

          ***The Taste***
The flavour is freshmint, and it has a very sweet mint taste to it. This is very pleasant to swill around in my mouth and makes my mouth feel nice and fresh. As it's a kid version of Listerine, it isn't anything like as strong in intensity as the adult mouthwashes. In this sense, it's more like a gentle mint mouthwash than your typical Listerine product.

          ***The Results***
This is rather like Dentyl in that it 'tints' bacteria so that it is a darker shade of green when you spit into the sink. There is always a fair bit of green tinting going on when I spit into the sink so I guess it helps to get rid of bacteria.

          ***Overall Verdict***
I like using this mouthwash as it's much more gentle than other Listerine mouthwashes (which have been far too strong for me in the past) but still leaves me feeling that it's doing a good job of keeping my mouth fresh. Although I only bought it for the size of the bottle originally, I'm going to keep on buying it as it's been surprisingly good.
