      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      A very very strong mouthwash

I like to use a mouthwash after brushing my teeth to keep my mouth feeling fresh and help protect my teeth. Recently I have been using various Aquafresh ones which I have been perfectly happy with so I was not particularly intending to switch, but when I went to my local Tesco Express the choice was quite limited and most of the bottles on display seemed to be Listerine. I know Listerine is supposed to be a very good and trusted brand for teeth so I thought I would give it a try.

The one I bought is Listerine Antibacterial mouthwash "stay white" in arctic mint flavour and I paid £2.20 for 250 ml which I do think is a bit expensive actually, considering I often pick up 500 ml bottles of mouthwash in the pound shop, but there weren't really any bargains in my local Tesco sadly!

The bottle looks quite medicinal with bold writing and allowing you to see the pale blue mouth wash inside. It promises to reduce tartar and prevent stains. The back explains further what it will do, and states it will kill plaque and keep teeth and gums healthy. That is basically what I want from a mouthwash, so so far so good.

We are told to use 20 ml and swirl it around the mouth for 30 seconds. 20 ml seemed a lot to me as my Aquafresh one told me to use 10 ml. I didn't actually measure it out and just put a bit in the cap.

My problem with this Listerine mouthwash soon became apparent when I put it in my mouth. It tastes absolutely disgusting! It is really, really gross. Unfortunately I could not really detect much of a refreshing minty taste. It just made my mouth feel on fire! My tongue actually hurt when using this and the taste was something I can't put my finger on. It seemed way stronger than anything I have ever had at the dentist. I could not manage to keep it in my mouth for the full 30 seconds and probably rinsed with it for about half that.

When I spat it out I had to run for a glass of water to get rid of the taste. I normally like to be able to have the fresh and minty taste of a mouthwash left in my mouth for a while, so I wouldn't really want to have to remove all traces of it immediately as it seems to kind of defeat the point, so I prefer a milder one which leaves a nicer taste behind.

This mouthwash is apparently suited for ages 12 plus. I don't think many 12 years old will like this and it might put them off using mouthwash for life if they think all of them are like this! I will give it another go later if I'm feeling brave ;) but honestly I really doubt I am going to be able to finish the bottle and I have already been to buy a bottle of Aquafresh. I will offer it to my flat mate if she can deal with the taste, otherwise my dad can have it when he comes at the weekend as I know he has used Listerine before.

If you do find the taste okay then I have no doubt it is an effective product, but it is not for me.

        Disadvantages

A great all round mouthwash that works brilliantly!

I started using Listerine at the beginning of 2011- after having a particularly bad dental experience involving an infection and an extracted wisdom tooth. Having these problems made me very determined to look after my teeth, gums and mouth as best as I possibly could. I asked my dentist what she recommended and she said Listerine- I haven't looked back since!
As I wanted to try my best to have white teeth as well as healthy ones I choose the whitening mouthwash. The first time I used it it burnt my mouth- but after the initial shock I realised how clean my month felt and how fresh my breath was. Now I love that burning sensation however I know its not for everyone- it certainly wouldn't be for anyone who is sensitive to that sort of thing! I find my mouth has never been so healthy since using this! My dentist was very impressed when I returned for my six monthly check-up- and I have no doubt it's down to this mouthwash.
I don't know if it does whiten the teeth as I use whitening toothpaste as well so it's hard to tell which one helps but I certainly like to think it does help!
Its not too expensive and I find often its on offer from Boots or Superdrug so I take advantage of it then- and its very easily available.
I'd recommend this mouthwash to anyone looking to get a really clean fresh feeling after they brush!

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

Never again, not in a million years!

My mouthwash of choice is Dentyl PH, but after receiving some money-off vouchers for Listerine products I decided to give them a try. As I tend to go for whitening toothpastes I chose the Listerine Antibacterial Stay White mouthwash.

The mouthwash is a pale bluey green colour, the bottle suggests you take 4 x teaspoons and gargle it round your mouth. I do it the way I usually take mouthwash and measure out around 3/4 of a capful, pouring it straight into my mouth from the cap - much easier even though I have to then rinse the cap before replacing it.

It tastes - oh.my.god. It tastes foul. It has an intense minty flavour which actually feels like it's burning my tongue, the mouthwash tastes extremely acidic and unpleasant which isn't good for someone like me who doesn't particularly like strong flavours. It does freshen my breath, it'd be unfair to say it doesn't, but I find the whole Listerine experience to not be very nice at all. After I've spat out the mouthwash I'm stuck with the burning sensation in my mouth, and I can't put up with that when equally effective mouthwashes taste so much nicer.

Afterwards my mouth feels fresh and clean, but again I rinse immediately after brushing so all mouthwashes have this effect. I wouldn't say my teeth look or feel any better than when I'm using other brands, in particular an excellent Colgate mouthwash actually leaves my teeth feeling cleaner even than after I've brushed - which definitely can't be said for this Listerine.

I'm not sure about the 'Stay White' claims either, I'm at a loss as to how a mouthwash can keep your teeth looking white - unless there's bleach in it which I doubt, however much it tastes like it! My dentist told me that it's the abrasive action of the baking soda that makes whitening toothpastes work, there's nowt abrasive in this clear liquid so I think this might be Listerine playing on peoples fears about off-white teeth.

I can't use it anyway; the flavour is much too harsh and although it feels freshening I'd rather go for another (less severe) brand which actually tastes nicer. Even Mark finds it very strong, and this is the bloke who will use harsher-than-harsh 59p mouthwash from Tesco because 'they all do the same thing'. Because the kids have good brushing routines they don't particularly need mouthwash, but if they want a bottle for any reason I'll buy them a milder version as there's no way this would be suitable for children. The burning on my tongue verges on painful so it definitely wouldn't be good to use it on the more sensitive mouths of kids, I suppose at fifteen Charlotte would be ok - but then again she's no fan of pain so I doubt she'll want to try it anytime soon.

Listerine make all the requisite tartar and plaque claims, but I honestly think it's negligible if you're brushing properly anyway. I was told by a dentist that mouthwashes are mainly for a freshening action and shouldn't be treated as something which will help the condition of your teeth, apparently there are people who are so taken in by mouthwash claims that they forego their brushing because they are so convinced about the powers of their mouthwash. I use mine as a cosmetic (ie. breath freshening qualities) product, although not this one again as I just can't stand the taste or sensation it produces.

        £3.49 (500ml bottle) from Boots.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

get when it's on offer well worth it!

If you are a regular user of Listerine you will know that it is a very powerful mouthwash and if you leave it in your mouth for too long then your mouth can start to feel tingly but it is doing your mouth the world of good, I have found the whitening one probably one of the mildest, it's still strong but not as harsh as the other ones.

It comes in a plastic bottle with a child safety cap which you need to squeeze and turn, it is not suitable for children under 12 and helps to clear bacteria in the mouth and reduces tartar to keep teeth whiter. Your breath feels very fresh after and you can be confident that you don't have bad breath!

As for the whitening I think it's difficult to tell if it's made your teeth any whiter, unless you have taken pictures before hand and used it for a few months and took a picture after I think it's quite difficult to see any difference, I personally couldn't see any difference after using it for about 6 weeks but besides that it still worked very well as a mouth wash and is one of my favourite brands, it can be very pricey but every now and then Asda do some good deals and is worth a visit.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

A good mouthwash which I recommend

I have been using Listerine Stay White mouthwash on and off recently and have found it to be something I really like. I do like to use a mouth wash after cleaning my teeth, unless I am using a 2 in 1 product like TheraMed Whitening which is a fab product to take away on your holidays. Listerine comes in many varieties and the one I have been using is the Whitening variety.

I only bought the mouth wash as they were on a 3 4 2 offer in Boots and the brand I went in for would have worked out as more expensive. So at £2.44 per 250ml bottle and then 3 4 2, it worked out as just under £1.63 each. I feel that £1.66 per bottle is very good for such a well known mouth wash brand!

          **********************************************************
Each bottle is a clear plastic one with a black twist and pinch style lid. I find these types of lids a bit hard to use as you need to put quite bit of pressure on the lid to get it to twist. So would have liked an easier system.

Its even harder on products that also have a plastic seal joined to the lid. Luckily the Listerine doesn't have that type of seal, it has a thin plastic film seal instead that you can peel off or cut through with scissors which is what I tend to do. The label on my bottle says it called Listerine Stay White and its written in black on a grey and bright blue label to match the lighter blue mouth wash.

The product is really strong when you use it and does sting the gums quite a lot. It even seems to numb my tongue if I gargle with it for too long, which at first I didn't like at all. I am getting used to that now and don't mind it so much.

          **********************************************************
The reason for the stinging is due to the fact that the mouthwash contains alcohol. So this may make it unsuitable for some people to use and its 100% not a good idea for younger children. Although children over 12 can safely use it if they don't mind the stinging sensation.

I love anything and everything minty and in my quest for minty freshness I have used many mouth wash and toothpaste products. I really like this mouthwash a lot. I am glad I tried it and will certainly buy it again when my last bottle runs out.

          **********************************************************
Its good at leaving your mouth and teeth nice and fresh, it doesn't leave any nasty residue behind and even has a brief whitening effect on your teeth. Yes it seems to whiten! I think that it may have some form of voodoo stylee chemical stuff in it, thats probably really bad for you, but might be just fine too! I don't know for sure if there is anything in the mouthwash that makes it work and if there is, what is does or how it does it. But I do know that after rinsing with this it really leaves your teeth an enhanced whiter brighter shade for a short while afterwards.

I am going to give this a 5 star rating due to the fact that I have noticed a difference in whiteness each time I have used it. This does go, but you only have to rinse again for it to come back for a while.

I have found that if I brush my teeth with the mouthwash instead of gargling loads of it, the stinging is less pronounced and the whitening results are enhanced a little. This means the mouthwash will last a little longer too.

          *********************************************************

I have updated this to show the list of ingredients for anyone who can fathom them. Just in case it helps anyone to work out whether the mouthwash really does contain anything extra special, or whether my tongue in cheek comment about possible 'voodoo stylee chemical stuff' being what made the product give me a short lived little extra whiteness, has any real basis in fact. At the time I was trying to get across how good the product has been for me to use, no more no less.

          List as follows:

          (PR-005020) aqua
          alcohol
          sorbitol
          propyl alcohol
          poloxamer 407
          benzoic acid
          eucalyptol
          zinc chloride
          methal salicylate
          thymol
          sodium benzoate
          menthol
          sucralose
          aroma
          sodium saccharin
          cl 42090

None of this means anything to me so I didn't list anything initially.

If any keen nosed bio chemist reading this can tell us what the whitening ingredients are it may be helpful. Otherwise I shall stick with my original thoughts about a possible mysterious voodoo stylee something that has worked well for me rather than mull over the fact that it may be a clever placebo effect that I have fallen for.

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

            a good whitening tooth wash

listerine whitening looks just like any other mouth wash on the shelves in the supermarket and isnt too badly priced either compared to other whitening products.

Unlike ordinary mouth wash where you would use them after brushing your teeth you need to rinse your mouth with 15ml of this before brushing your teeth for about 60 seconds. It foams in your mouth, not just froths a little like other mouth washes but actually foams into loads of bubbles, after you just brush your teeth as normal.

You will according to the bottle need to do this twice a day for 12 weeks to see any results which did seem like a long time to me but it is progressive and then if used every day it keeps your teeth nice and white.

It isnt too badly flavoured as it has a mint flavour to it but it isnt a nice mint flavour either.

It kills germs that cause bad breath but has no plaque reducing qualities so you will have to use a seperate mouth wash for this.

You do notice a difference in the colour of your teeth after about the first week and it does make them a lot whiter than they were but it doesnt work miracles.

              Antibacterial Mouthwash

Like most people I enjoy fresh breath and white teeth so I was very excited to find this new Listerine Antibacterial Mouthwash, Stay White version in Sainsbury's a few weeks ago.

It was approximately £2.50 for a 500ml bottle which I didn't think was too bad. We decided to go for the smaller 500ml bottle as opposed to the 1 litre as we never seem to go through a litre bottle and it always stays on the shelf and then I think it won't be that fresh. With the 500ml bottle we will use this quicker although it does have a best before date of 02/2010 so I'm sure we will use it before then.

My husband has been trying to get me to use the original version for quite a while now but I found it way too overpowering and strong and could not even keep the liquid in my mouth long enough to swish it around so I was interested to see if this version would be any better. I was very pleased to find out that it was. It still is quite strong and stings a little bit but not as much as the regular version. Saying this though I still felt as if it was doing a good a job as the other version.

The taste is still the same, the antisceptic, medicine taste and that stays in your mouth for a while afterwards but when it fades it leaves your breath still smelling fresh and natural.

The liquid is blue and it says on the bottle that it helps keep teeth whiter. It does this by reducing and preventing tartar which make teeth stay whiter if you can prevent it. I have been using this for a few weeks now and although I have not noticed a big difference in the whiteness of my teeth it is definitely keeping them clean and it seems to keep my teeth the same shade that they are and they are not getting stained by the tons of coffee I drink each day.

If you have never used Listerine mouthwash it is very easy to use. Basically you take a mouthful of the liquid, rinse it around your teeth and gums for approximately 30 seconds and then spit out. DO NOT SWALLOW. It contains a lot of chemicals so never swallow it. It says on the bottle to pour some of the liquid into a glass before you drink it but I just use the cap as I find it easier. The nice thing about the cap is that it has a child safety lock on it, you have to squeeze the cap in order to open it so little children will not be able to do this which is good. I find that when I have been swilling it around my mouth it foams up a bit as well. After I spit it out I like to rinse my mouth out with a bit of water to stop the burning which works quite effectively.

All in all I find this to be a good product which I definitely recommend. The bottle says it:
Reduces more plaque than just brushing
Kills bacteria in the mouth, a cause of gum disease
              Freshens breath

I have definitely found that it does all of these things and I will continue to use this to keep my mouth and teeth healthy and looking good.

This product really does the trick in makingteeth white.

I have used this product for years in the US. It is an excellent product. It does make your teeth white. I hated smiling before, because of my yellowish teeth after drinking lots of tea. After using this product, I love showing them off and I also smile a lot. It is very difficult to get it in the shops over here. I trust the shops selling toothpaste and other Listerine products would stock this.
