Mouth feels on fire
Member Name: helenc72
Advantages: Antibacterial, kills plaque, keeps teeth white, strong
Disadvantages: Tastes revolting, burning sensation
I like to use a mouthwash after brushing my teeth to keep my mouth feeling fresh and help protect my teeth. Recently I have been using various Aquafresh ones which I have been perfectly happy with so I was not particularly intending to switch, but when I went to my local Tesco Express the choice was quite limited and most of the bottles on display seemed to be Listerine. I know Listerine is supposed to be a very good and trusted brand for teeth so I thought I would give it a try.
The one I bought is Listerine Antibacterial mouthwash "stay white" in arctic mint flavour and I paid £2.20 for 250 ml which I do think is a bit expensive actually, considering I often pick up 500 ml bottles of mouthwash in the pound shop, but there weren't really any bargains in my local Tesco sadly!
The bottle looks quite medicinal with bold writing and allowing you to see the pale blue mouth wash inside. It promises to reduce tartar and prevent stains. The back explains further what it will do, and states it will kill plaque and keep teeth and gums healthy. That is basically what I want from a mouthwash, so so far so good.
We are told to use 20 ml and swirl it around the mouth for 30 seconds. 20 ml seemed a lot to me as my Aquafresh one told me to use 10 ml. I didn't actually measure it out and just put a bit in the cap.
My problem with this Listerine mouthwash soon became apparent when I put it in my mouth. It tastes absolutely disgusting! It is really, really gross. Unfortunately I could not really detect much of a refreshing minty taste. It just made my mouth feel on fire! My tongue actually hurt when using this and the taste was something I can't put my finger on. It seemed way stronger than anything I have ever had at the dentist. I could not manage to keep it in my mouth for the full 30 seconds and probably rinsed with it for about half that.
When I spat it out I had to run for a glass of water to get rid of the taste. I normally like to be able to have the fresh and minty taste of a mouthwash left in my mouth for a while, so I wouldn't really want to have to remove all traces of it immediately as it seems to kind of defeat the point, so I prefer a milder one which leaves a nicer taste behind.
This mouthwash is apparently suited for ages 12 plus. I don't think many 12 years old will like this and it might put them off using mouthwash for life if they think all of them are like this! I will give it another go later if I'm feeling brave ;) but honestly I really doubt I am going to be able to finish the bottle and I have already been to buy a bottle of Aquafresh. I will offer it to my flat mate if she can deal with the taste, otherwise my dad can have it when he comes at the weekend as I know he has used Listerine before.
If you do find the taste okay then I have no doubt it is an effective product, but it is not for me.
Summary: A very very strong mouthwash
