Advantages: straightforward, good basic toothbrush at low cost
Disadvantages: none for me
Toothbrushes on the supermarket shelves seem to me to be an extensive range of multi-coloured designs at high prices. I have searched for ages to find a suitable toothbrush at a reasonable price. So many toothbrushes have wide bulky handles which I struggle to hold onto whilst brushing and often, as I have sensitive gums, end up with a sore mouth due to the various 'massagers' and large brush heads. I began to long for the old fashioned and basic toothbrushes we used to have in childhood.
A toothbrush is a little thing in our lives, something we don't really want to put too much thought towards. A toothbrush which is comfortable to use and does the job effectively is all that most of us require. But it is a 'tool' we use each and every day, so fairly important. It is recommended we brush our teeth twice a day and change our toothbrush every 3 months.
Just over a month ago whilst once again searching through the shelves of toothbrushes, this time at Tesco, I decided to buy a pack of Tesco Value toothbrushes. They are currently priced at 30 pence for two white plastic toothbrushes and packaged in a clear plastic sealed bag with the minimalist Tesco Value Range labelling. I had previously dismissed them on many occasions, thinking they looked flimsy and the brush head would be soft and most probably useless. Let's face it, they do look 'cheap' and you normally get what you pay for.
But how wrong I was! What a relief to find a toothbrush that is comfortable to use. The toothbrush is 19cm long with a flat handle which narrows and slightly curves at the top towards the brush head. Ridges moulded on the handle at the point where your thumb holds the brush provide a good grip. The brush head is small which I find ideal for brushing, making it possible to easily get behind and to the back of my teeth, also without getting sore gums. The bristles (probably made from nylon) are quite firm and they last well.
I have been both surprised and impressed by these toothbrushes. The shaker maxim 'Tis a gift to be simple' has kept coming to my mind whilst brushing my teeth! I think everyday items are often over designed and decorated, then sold at ridiculous prices. How refreshing to find an item that is just what it needs to be and nothing more.
It would be unfair to compare one of these to an electric toothbrush, but if you are looking for a straightforward toothbrush with a slim handle, a small but firm brush head and don't mind a plain looking white toothbrush, Tesco Value Twin Pack of 2 toothbrushes are a bargain. Ideal for travel.
Thanks for reading!
