Tesco Value Toothbrush
Advantages: Cheap, cheap, cheap. Good for temporary use.
Disadvantages: Not long-lasting. Doesn't feel like a thorough clean.
I really needed a change of toothbrush, but toothbrushes are one of those everyday items that remain shrouded in mystery for me. I use one every day, but I have no idea where to start when I need to buy another. Soft, medium, hard? Flexible neck? Extra-voluptuous handle? What on earth did I get last time? After reading the reviews here, and with a growing fascination for Tesco Value, I picked up a pack of these.
The toothbrushes come in twin packs that cost 30p - 15p a brush! The packet describes them as "medium texture for effective cleaning", and that's the only option available. After being told numerous times that my favoured hard brushes are bad for the enamel (I don't know what to believe any more), I was content to try medium.
The handle's design is very much function over form: straight, thin, white, and quite flat. The neck has a slight curve, and there's a little ridged section for you to get some purchase on, but those are the only ergonomic concessions. If you have big hands it might not be the easiest thing to grip, and even my skinny fingers took a while to adjust. The brushes are also too thin for the holes on our wooden toothbrush holder - a silly thing I should foreseen - so I keep them in a beaker instead.
The head of the brush is quite small and narrow, with no fancy stuff on the back for extra cleaning, as a lot of toothbrushes have now. The bristles are white, all the same length, a bit soft and thin, and lasted about a week before they started to splay out of shape. I admit I did spend about three times as long brushing my teeth, just to equal the same clean feeling I got with my previous brush, and this didn't help keep the bristles in shape. Though they do the job, they don't feel fully thorough, so I wouldn't use these without floss to sort out all the crannies. After a couple of weeks I started to feel like my teeth were looking darker, though it was hard to distinguish whether this was down to the change of brush or just general paranoia. As a habitual drinker of tea and coffee, I'm always anxious not to let my teeth get stained, and these didn't do much to alleviate my concerns.
Given the poor longevity of the bristles, I don't think these brushes are a viable long-term replacement for costlier ones. If you favour soft bristles already, they might last longer for you, but as a pretty vigorous brusher I doubt these will last me a couple of months each. It's advisable to change brushes every three months at least, to avoid gathering too much bacteria, but these would be too out of shape for my liking even before then. They're fine as a temporary measure, but I wouldn't want to rely on them.
Though I've enjoyed my Value dabble, I'm looking forward to using these up and buying something a bit more expensive. I'm sure there are other cheap or own-brand brushes that would do a better job. For 30p I really can't dislike them too much - or complain that I haven't gotten my money's worth, since I have - but in the long run it strikes me as a false economy, and oral hygiene isn't something to mess about with. If nothing else, when I'm done with them I'll have a couple of nice little brushes to shine the taps with.
Summary: A decent temporary brush for next to nothing, but not great for sustained, thorough use.
