Fybogel Hi-Fibre Orange
Advantages: Helps to maintain regularity, doesn't taste too bad
Disadvantages: Not good for relieving existing severe constipation, has to be drunk really quickly
Fybogel was recommended to me by my Dr as a way to try and relieve constipation while pregnant. As it is basically just fibre in drink form, it is perfectly safe, and is a recommended way to try and relieve constipation before using stimulant laxatives and other methods.
I believe that Fybogel can be quite effective at keeping constipation at bay, however, if the constipation is already quite advanced then this product might not do much for you - it certainly didn't in my experience. The one thing that it did manage however, was to nearly make me throw up!
The drink actually tastes a lot better than I expected and was like an orange cordial drink - the powder comes in sachet forms and it is simply a case of mixing this in with cold water. You have to use about 200ml of water to get the powder to dissolve correctly. My problem lay in the fact that I have never been able to drink a drink very quickly, and with morning sickness and a bloated stomach due to my trouble with the Number 2's, that was even less likely to happen. But, with fybogel, you have no choice but to try and drink the mixture quickly... Presumably due to the fibre content, within about 3 minutes of making the drink it starts to thicken into a texture I can only describe as... wallpaper paste. It soon got so thick that I think the only way for me to get it down would have been to eat it with a spoon.
I simply couldn't tolerate putting myself through this ordeal twice a day, so decided that whilst trying to get on top of my bowel troubles I would rather live off nothing but cereal and wholemeal bread. I realise that long term this is not practical however, and for people who simply can't meet their fibre needs within their diet and need help, then this is a viable option. Although I'm not convinced of it's ability to get rid of constipation, I certainly think it would help to maintain regularity.
If you can tolerate drinking a drink very quickly, then I would say it's worth a go. But if not then you may not like this experience. As much as it's best to use the nicest "medication" for your body, I'm a big believer in quality of life and nearly throwing up in the kitchen twice a day is not the way to go! In which case, it would be best to speak to the GP and see what other options are available.
Summary: Personally not a fan, but can see why it would work for some people
