What is it?
Omeprazole is an absolute wonder drug that is used to treat a condition called Gastric Oesophageal Reflux Disease or in short GORD. It really is a super drug that helps reduce the production of acid in the stomach that causes the distressing and painful symptoms of heartburn. This is not just an ordinary case of heartburn but one that is quite significantly disabling. It comes from a group of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors which reduces the production of acid in the lining of the stomach.
Having lived with this for many years there have been some life time changes I have made for example ensuring the head of the bed is slightly raised you can do this by putting a small piece of wood under the bed where your head will be resting. I sleep with 2-3 pillows do not go to sleep for a couple of hours after I have eaten, avoid eating fatty foods which I know will start me off. These simple changes that have made a difference.
Before I was diagnosed I would be up every single night not being able to sleep until the very early hours of the morning with incredible burning pains in my chest as the acid rose up into the oesophagus and burning the inside like hell. I used to take all kinds of remedies such as Rennie and anything I could get my hands on just to try and reduce the burning. Many people advised me to drink milk but this only made it worse. I used to vomit every night and could not sleep until I had done so. It was not a very pleasant sight at all plus I was working full time and only snatching about 2-3 hours of sleep every night. I was tired and exhausted and when seeing my GP one day I flipped and told him to stop sitting looking at me with that stupid grin on your face and do something about it!!!!
I saw a gastroenterologist who prescribed this wonder drug. I was very sceptical at first about taking just one tablet a day as I had been taking Rennie and other indigestion tablets like they were going out of fashion. Had I not stood up to my GP that day the constant burning of the oesophagus could have led to cancerous changes in the lining of the oesophagus not to mention the potential likely hood of ulceration and bleeding.
I have been taking Omeprazole now for quite a few years. I have never had any problems with it however if I miss a dose or have forgotten to take it within three hours of my usual time I know I have missed taking it as the all familiar symptoms of burning come back.
You cannot buy this over the counter in the UK as it is a prescription only medicine you can tell on the box whether it is prescribable medicine or over the counter medicine by the letters POM for prescription only medicine or OTC over the counter medicine which does not need a prescription. It is available in some countries over the counter and available on line. It is useful to remember its chemical name rather than a brand name so that if you are abroad then you can always identify your drugs by its proper name.
Omeprazole can be used in a combination therapy when trying to rid the stomach of Helicobactor pylori which is the bacteria that can lead to gastro intestinal ulceration. It is given in conjunction with two types of anti-biotics to eradicate the bacteria.
The dosage can range from 10mg up to 40 mg a day. 20mg is a maintenance dose which is what I have been taking all these years. It is a very useful drug and quite safe to use. The medicine is inside an oblong capsule in which there are tiny little balls of the drug which are absorb throughout the day.
There is a wide list of side effects to Omeprazole but to be honest I would not get too bogged down with them as they are only reported side effects that have been reported when patients have started on these drugs. These side effects may have been reported as a coincidence of the patient taking the drug and may be totally unrelated.
The main problems though are a feeling of bloating or fullness of the stomach (probably due to the slowed down effect of digestion due to the reduced acid in the stomach). Some people may experience abdo pains. Fortunately for me I have had no problems with them at all.
This really is a miracle medicine which has helped me get on with my life as opposed to the dreaded state I was in a few years ago.
Would I recommend it?
Yes but only under medical supervision after being diagnosed properly in the first place.
