Derby House Pegasus Print Turnout
by PerfectPeaches I've mentioned in a previous review that my cousin and I own two ex-riding school ponies who are in their teens. They live out all year round as it seems to suit them better than being stabled. They are both awful when it comes to keeping their rugs in one piece as they have a tendency to rip them a lot which means replacing them quite ... often. Fortunately with new pony ranges charging less than standard rugs it is now slightly cheaper to replace them - even cheaper if we can get them second hand! Having recently been impressed with Derby House's own range of rugs we had a look to see if they had anything suitable for the ponies in their sale. After having a look on their website we came across the Pegasus Print rug which although was a rug we wouldn't of picked simply due to the bright, colourful print it was reduced and came in the sizes we needed and it would replace their current rugs which had been repaired once too often! The Pegasus Print is from Derby House's own collection and is a turnout rug so it is only suitable for use in a field. As you can see from the picture the rug is white and features images of a unicorn all over the rug in bold, primary colours which certainly make the rug standard out compared to others! As I said this rug is for outdoor use only and has a 600 denier waterproof and breathable outer. Basically higher the denier then tougher the rug so this is pretty durable for use out in the field especially fields which are lined with bramble hedges! This rug is classed as a sheet and it has absolutely no fill to it whatsoever so not recommended if you are wanting a thick, warm rug. I personally use these rugs on the ponies during the spring months which just keeps them dry and comfortable without them overheating and sweating. The rug has a nylon lining throughout which helps keep their coat clean and smooth although it may cause slight rubbing on the shoulders as most rugs do. There is a fleece wither pad at the top of the rug which rests at the end of the mane and does reduce rubbing. In order to reduce any rubbing on the shoulder area then you can use a chest protector which can protect the coat from the rug itself. At the back of the rug there is a small tail flap which helps protect the horse or pony from the elements. There is a large enough shoulder gusset at the front of the rug which allows the horse to move about freely. The rug is fastened at the front by double reinforced buckles which are adjustable, they are further secured by touch tape fastenings which is effectively velcro. To help keep the rug secure there are two adjustable surcingles which cross under the horse's belly, it is important that these are not too tight or too loose in order to keep the horse comfortable and accident free. At the back of the rug there are adjustable and removable leg straps which cross in between the horse's back legs. Again it is vital that these are not too loose or too tight. All fastenings colour co-ordinate with the rug which is nice. Our two have worn this rug a couple of times as we have had a few warm days and they can overheat easily. I found that the fastenings are easy to adjust which is great when you are trying to change a rug on a pony who is insisting on walking whilst you sort the rug out in the field! The rug fits the ponies well enough as it can although on the one it gapes a little at the front and is a bit big in the chest but he is quite a narrow, slim pony whereas the other is a bit more chunky and it fits him far better. The rug seems quite deep on them and the front of the rug seems a little long but it doesn't affect how they walk in it. Overall, I really cant fault the rug as all rugs fit differently on horses and ponies and for the price paid I cant complain. It keeps the two ponies dry and warm which is what I wanted it to do. I just would have liked the smaller sizes of the rugs not to swamp the ponies so much as even though in length its fine, the depth seems a little too long. For that reason alone I can only award the rug 4 stars. As much as I don't really like the Pegasus print pattern it is quite sweet and suits the ponies but I doubt very much I'd put one of my big horses in the rug! I'd recommend this rug simply due to the price and because it is a sheet with no fill and it does the job. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Useful Info ~~~~~~~~~~ Availability: Derby House - online or in store Sizes: 3'9" to 7'3" Colour: Pegasus print with red binding Price: Was £40.84 now £27.99 Product code: 401-0066 Read the complete review |

Luna Rider Lightweight Flourescent Exercise Sheet
by Oddbodd Unfortunately as riders we often have to take our horses onto the roads to exercise them. This is not usually by choice but is a necessity to get to the nearest bridleway, or to link up two bridleways etc. Also, in the winter a lot of the bridleways are impassable as they get too muddy or frozen etc. As a rider who regularly ... rides out on the road, safety is paramount and I consider it essential to wear hi-viz, whatever the weather. Even on a bright, sunny day, drivers can't always immediately see a horse and rider. In fact it can be worse in the sunshine as it dazzles drivers and also creates shadows on a leafy lane which can camouflage us riders. I have plenty of hi-viz clothing myself, but the rider is not actually in the direct eye-line of a car driver and actually, putting something hi-viz on the horse is more effective. In addition to this, when it's cold or rainy horses can often do with some protection over their back and quarters, so a hi-viz exercise sheet like this kills two birds with one stone! After a bad experience with a 'waterproof' exercise sheet not doing its job properly at all and regularly ending up with a soaked horse after a rainy ride, I decided to try the Luna Rider hi-viz sheet. I picked this up at the bargain price of £15 so, whilst I expected it to do the job, I wasn't expecting great things from it. ----- Materials ----- The sheet is made from a waterproof polyester outer with a cotton lining. The outer is fluorescent yellow, with two reflective stripes each side at the back. It is extremely bright and easy to see and the reflective stripes will catch either the sunlight or a car's headlights at just the right eye level for a driver. It is indeed waterproof and believe me I have tested it! We have been out with this sheet in absolute downpours, often being out for well over an hour in persistent heavy rain (oh what wonderful rides I sometimes have!) Every time this happens I come back expecting the rain to have penetrated the sheet but it never has, the horses are always totally dry underneath it. The cotton lining is soft and comfortable against the horse and makes this a lightweight sheet so is very useful for when the weather is just a bit damp or windy and so I only need slight protection for the horse without weighing her down with a heavy, thick sheet which I might use in worse weather. As it is so lightweight, in very cold weather I can use it on top of a fleece exercise sheet without adding any weight to the horse's back. ----- Fit ----- The sheet attaches with a Velcro tab just in front of the saddle. It is a wrap-around sheet, so it has a cut-out for the saddle and passes under the saddle flaps to the main part of the sheet which totally covers the horse's quarters. I find it to be just the right length - covering their back and quarters nicely, without being too long and interfering with their movement. It has a fillet string which passes under the tail to stop it from blowing up in the wind. It stays in place perfectly, I have used it for schooling as well as hacking, so have tested it with prolonged periods of faster work and it never shifts. Because it is nice and light with just a cotton lining, the horse stays comfortable underneath it without getting hot and sweaty. ----- Washing and Durability ----- This sheet has been used, dropped on the floor, chucked in a box, soaked, hung up to dry, thrown in the back of the car, you name it. It dries pretty quickly when it's had a soaking and it has retained its shape and is still waterproof. On the rare occasions that I actually wash it, I chuck it in the machine at 30 degrees and hang it up to dry afterwards. It looks almost as good as new. ----- Value for money ----- I think I did get a bargain at £15 as I see it around for about £20-25 usually. However, I still think this offers excellent value for money at either price. It has already lasted me a couple of years of regular use and I expect it to last a good while longer yet, the way it is performing so far. Overall an excellent and essential piece of kit for the all-weather rider, I would be lost without mine. Read the complete review |

Allen & Page Calm and Condition
by PerfectPeaches When it comes to feeding my horses they all have different requirements which is costly but it is effective as they are all different in personality and what they actually need due to their work levels. My one horse is now coming up to 15 and I have had him since he was a 5 year old so I know him quite well! He has always been a little ... too excitable so he has always been on a calming supplement or a non heating feed. But he has always required his coat condition to be in great shape due to competing but trying to get a conditioning feed without the use of barley or oats was bit of a challenge. About 6 years ago (or so) Allen & Page who are nationwide producers of horse feeds brought out a feed called Calm & Condition which is barley and oat free so therefore ideal for those horses and ponies that can "hot up" or get overly excited on standard conditioning feeds. I talked to an Allen & Page rep at my local feed merchants who recommended it and I thought I'd give it a go especially with a money off voucher I was given. Allen & Page colour code all of their feeds which certainly makes it easy when trying to pick out your bag of feed! The feed name is clearly written on the top of each bag in large font which again makes it easy to spot. For Calm & Condition the feed like all feeds comes in a reinforced tough paper bag which is a maroon type colour. Allen & Page's logo is also quite large on the front together with an image of a horse being ridden. The bag is folded over at the top and is easily opened. As I said above the feed is barley and oat free which are two ingredients which can cause the horse to get overly excitable so without these two ingredients the horse or pony won't get as excitable and will hopefully stay calm! Because the feed is barley free it is suitable for those horses or ponies that have a barley intolerance. So that's the 'calm' bit taken care of but what makes it a conditioning feed...Allen & Page use a high oil balance of linseed and soya oils which help produce a fantastic coat on the horse or pony. The mix of oils help the horse put on condition and maintain it. The feed also contains boosted vitamins, minerals and premium grade herbs which when combined also help produce optimum condition. Protexin helps maintain a healthy digestive system but as this is a fibre feed this also helps a horse's digestive tract. Calm & Condition is low in starch and high in fibre and is suitable for horses in light to medium work but it can also be fed to competition horses who are working hard but need to keep a sensible head. Competition horses get the fantastic condition which is required without getting overly excitable which makes this feed very versatile. Once you open the bag you are met with a gentle herby fragrance which compared to other feeds is actually quite mild. Calm & Condition is a pelleted feed and the pellets are quite small in size both in length and width. Pellets are a greeny/ brown colour and do just look like dried grass which has been put into a pellet form! Feeding Calm & Condition is relatively easy as you simply need to measure the amount you need depending on what level of work your horse is doing and also measuring the amount according to how big your horse is. It is important that you don't over or under feed a horse. Calm & Condition does contain a small amount of unmolassed sugarbeet and therefore it has to be mixed with water before feeding to a horse/ pony as sugarbeet does expand. When I used this feed I mixed mine with Dengie Hi Fi (a fibre feed) and a general vitamin and mineral supplement. I don't actually feed this to my horse anymore and I stopped feeding it to him after about 8 months basically as it wasn't having much impact on his 'hot head' nature. Yes, his coat was fantastic and had a lovely glossy shine to it but as for the calming effect this is meant to deliver the change didn't really happen for my horse as he remained quite hot headed and I did give the feed a long enough time to get into his system and to hopefully work but as there wasn't any change I decided to put him onto another feed and back onto a calming supplement which actually does the job. After talking to my vet she did explain that the combination of linseed and soya oils can actually boost the horse's energy levels which may explain why my horse didn't become calmer and of course not every feed will suit every horse so it is just trial and error. I can't fault the feed as even though it didn't calm my horse down it did give him a lovely coat and his condition was maintained well especially his top line but other feeds do this too. He enjoyed the feed when it was fed to him and he didn't turn his nose up to it but it just wasn't compatible with him and his hot headed temperament. But I'd still recommend it to those whose horse does need the condition as this can work wonders. ~ Useful Info ~ Comes in a 20kg bag and can cost anywhere from £10 to £14 per bag. Available at all Allen & Page feed merchants both online and in store. - Vegetarian Society approved - Non GM ingredients - Omega 3 Oils - Used by Pippa and William Funnell The vitamin and mineral supplement in these feeds provides Vitamin A, Vitamin D3, Vitamin E, Copper, Selenium, Vitamin K, Folic Acid, Nicotinic Acid, Pantothenic Acid, Vitamins B1, B2, B6, B12, Biotin, Iodine, Cobalt, Iron, Manganese, Zinc, Calcium and Magnesium.
