Baileys Economy Mix Plus
by princess1986 I recently needed to change my horses feed as he is not worked and with the snow he has been stabled a lot of the time and he is prone to being a little "strong willed" and he didnt need anything making him even more fizzy. My supplier where I get my other feeds and supplements from (chaff/garlic etc) recomended I ... try baileys economy mix plus which is intended for horses who are not worked or those who are in light work. She used the feed for her veteran horse who was used as a light hack only two or three times a week and she said that he has been great on this feed. I paid £7.99 for a 20kg bag which is a good deal as this bag will last a few weeks when mixed with chaff. The bag is a strong paper but when opened it tears easlily and this can be a problem if you lift the heavy bag to move it once the bag is opened, as i found when mine tore completely down the side, but this wasnt a problem as i keep my feeds in feed bins anyway so i just popped it straight into the feed bin and dsposed of the bag. Before disposing of the bag i made a note of the nutritional contentof the mix, this is as follows... NUTRIENT SPECIFICATION DIGESTIBLE ENERGY 10MJ/kg PROTEIN 9.5% OIL 4.0% FIBRE 16% ASH 7.5% The feed stays nice and fresh smelling when kept in a lockale feed bin and when opened you get the fresm smell of the mix every time. The mix is completely dry with no oils in it and also no oats so as not to encourage fizzy behaviour. It was then time for the taste test, now my welsh cob is not a picky fellow, he will eat almost anything so for him to turn up his nose to this food would be very bad. I scooped out one scoop of the feed and mixed it in with two scoops of chaff (dengie hi-fi lite, as he is a native and a good doer so i have to watch what he gets) as well as his daily carrot slices and apple segments mixed in. I put the food in and he ate it straight away without so much as a sniff first and three weeks later he is still eating the same mix with as much enthusiam as the first time. His condition has not changed whilst being fed this mix, however he has only been on it for three weeks so it may be too soo to say so I will update this review in a couple of months to let you know if there has been any change either positive or negative. I beleive that this feed is excelent value fo money and that it is a perfect, affordable feed for retired/veteran horses or horses and ponies in light work. Read the complete review |

Baileys No.14 Lo-Cal Balancer
by Poison_kitty Bailey's No. 14 Lo-Cal Balancer is a feed designed to provide all the vitamins a horse needs without adding to its calorific intake. It can be fed alongside other feeds or on its own, making it ideal to keep working horses in good condition but also aid hoof repair in horses recovering from laminitis. It also contains Yea-Sacc1026 ... yeast culture which improves the efficiency of the gut, meaning the horse is more able to benefit from any additional feed or forage. Most importantly this feed is non-heating, useful for the excitable types! It retails at around £23 and comes in a 20 kg, double-thickness yellow paper bag with the Bailey's logo on the front in blue. With one horse eating two coffee mugs per day, it lasts me around two months. Feeding and nutritional information is clearly printed on the back of the bag and if you have any questions, they also provide the phone number for their feeding hotline. . It is a pelleted feed which readily absorbs water, so it is recommended to keep it somewhere dry like inside a plastic bin. When I bought my part-bred Arab she was in need of a few extra pounds especially along her topline. After putting her on a good quality cereal I needed something that would give her all the vitamins she needed without being heating or giving her any extra energy - she was quite the handful in the beginning! After feeding the Lo-Cal balancer for a few weeks I began to notice a sparkle in her coat (she's predominantly grey so will never be truly shiny like darker horses!) and even my farrier commented on her good quality hooves! The cereal has since been replaced but the balancer has stayed and I don't think I will ever stop using it. I find it to be really good value, especially since there are other balancers on the market which retail at rather considerably more, but do the same job. It is always worth keeping an eye on magazines and the bailey's website, as there are sometimes offers or money-off vouchers too. Read the complete review |

Baileys Economy Mix Plus
by Katastrophe I recently bought my first bag of Baileys Economy Mix Plus. One of my horses had an injury and as a result is to be rested and then brought back into light work over several months so a high performance mix would not be suitable for her. I asked my feed merchant which mix he'd recommend and Economy Mix Plus was his answer. ... It is high fibre, low energy mix and will provide all of the vitamins and minerals that horses require while in little or no work. Baileys Economy Mix Plus is free from oats to prevent fizzy behaviour. For some horses an oat free mix is essential, so is worth mentioning. 1 bag cost £7.65 (September 2008). I am still using this bag (Mid October 2008) and it is still fresh and nice smelling and my horse seems to like it. It is not quite as fragrant as some other feeds on the market, and it's clear to see that it is not of the same quality as the performance mix I feed before the injury. But it is half the price, so I wasn't expecting something similar. Baileys make it clear what this mix is intended for. I would recommend this feed for anyone with a horse / pony in light work or no work to give all of the minerals and vitamins that are needed without spending a fortune on fancy feeds. It is an ideal 'all rounder' feed for every yard. You can feed it on it's own, or chaff (Alfa A / Alfa A Oil) and beet can be added as desired. I feed it with Alfa A Oil and water, adding beet in when it gets much colder. The listed ingredients are: Micronised Barley, Oatfeed, Grass Meal, Micronised Wheat, Molasses, Wheatfeed, Micronised Maize, Micronised Peas, Soya Oil, Dicalcium Phosphate, Calcium Carbonate, Vitamins and Minerals, Calcined Magnesite NUTRIENT SPECIFICATION DIGESTIBLE ENERGY 10MJ/kg PROTEIN 9.5% OIL 4.0% FIBRE 16% ASH 7.5% Read the complete review |
