Dengie Alfa-A Oil
by PerfectPeaches Having four horses with all varying diets can be a hassle as well as an expense I really could do without. But like people horses do require diets that suit them and therefore horse feed manufacturers really do have a wide range of feeds suitable for any type of horse which does make it slightly easy to find a feed which is right for ... your horse. My one horse who has a few issues does not keep his weight well and does need help in order for him to maintain his weight and keep a nice, healthy looking coat. I have used Dengie Alfa and Hi Fi products for my horses for over 10 years and I am incredibly loyal to the brand so when they brought out Alfa-A Oil a few years ago I bought a bag and have kept my one horse on it ever since. Alfa-A Oil is a conditioning fibre feed for both horses and ponies and has the addition of oil which makes this particular fibre feed ideal for those horses or ponies which require weight gain and also for those that are currently in hard work and need the extra boost from the oil. Alfa-A Oil is free from cereal grains which makes this also suitable for those horses which can become highly excitable and for those that are prone to muscular problems. Dengie colour code all of their fibre feed products and in this case Alfa-A Oil comes in a maroon coloured polythene bag which has been vacuum packed to ensure freshness. On the front of the bag there is an image of a show ready bay horse with a lovely glossy coat together with the green Dengie logo. On the back of the bag there is information on the product together with the feeding recommendations. Alfa-A Oil is basically made from pure alfalfa which has been dried and chopped at very high temperatures which helps to lock in the natural goodness and is then coated in soya oil for that additional slow release energy together with adding help to maintain weight. Alfalfa is a great natural source of antioxidants including vitamin E. Because it is dried at a high temperature this helps reduce mould and also because its extraction process is so efficient it ensures Alfa-A Oil has a very low dust content which is ideal for your horse's respiratory health. When you open the bag for the first time you can smell that 'grass' aroma which is fresh and actually quite nice. The alfalfa has been chopped into small pieces which is dark green in colour and dry to touch. It can be easily scooped out the bag and due to it being vacuum packed it can clump into large sections but as soon as you try to break it up, the alfalfa easily breaks apart into little stalk like pieces. Alfa-A Oil can be fed on its own as a sole energy source but you do need to add an all round mineral and vitamin supplement to ensure the horse or pony gets the required daily amounts. Or you can feed the fibre feed with a mix or nuts. I personally feed this to my horse along with his mix together with sugar beet. However, it is fed you do need to follow the feeding recommendations in order you don't over or under feed your horse. Personally I use 2 scoops (around 800g) as he is a large horse (17hh warmblood) and he does also have other things in his dinner. To feed you simply need to put the required amount into a bucket and slightly dampen with water. It is important that you never feed Alfa-A Oil dry as it can cause problems. I've been feeding this to my one horse now for around 4 years and I wouldn't change it for anything else. He will never be the fattest horse in the world and he still does struggle a little during the winter months keeping his weight on so I do have to increase the amount he has just spread over 3 feeds. But his coat has looked the best it has ever looked, instead of looking a bit dull, wiry and lack lustre his coat is now soft and with a lovely shine to it. He can be a fussy eater and because this has a more natural aroma to it he hasn't had any problems eating it and does eat it quite quickly whereas before with his previous fibre feed I used he would push it around his bucket and lose interest in it quite quickly. Now he seems to enjoy his feeds, his coat is looking better and he is maintaining his weight a lot better than he used to. ~ Useful Info ~ Alfa-A Oil comes in a 20kg bag and costs around £11-£14 per bag depending on where you buy it. Most horse feed merchants will stock Dengie but it can be purchased online. Ingredients Alfalfa, Soya Oil, Mould Inhibitor, Vitamin E Read the complete review |

Dengie Hi-Fi Original with Apple
by PerfectPeaches Apart from my four horses I do also co-own two ponies with my cousin who are ex riding school ponies and my cousin does private riding lessons with them so they pay their keep! Both ponies are around 12 years old and are good doers, they rarely drop weight but they can be prone to putting on the pounds during the summer. Therefore, they ... do have a basic low calorie dinner. Up till a year ago they were fed a basic feed of Dengie Hi-Fi Original but when I saw the new apple version I decided to try them on this instead. Dengie are a leading producer of fibre feeds in the equestrian world and I have been using their products for over 10 years and I have never had any reason to change my horses onto anything else. Basically Hi-Fi Original with Apple is just the same as the original version of Hi-Fi but Dengie have included apple pellets into this fibre feed. Horses and ponies can be fussy eaters and the apple pellets with their obviously apple scent appeals to those fussy eaters and encourages them to eat. The feed provides approximately 8 MJ/Kg of slow release energy and a consistent level of natural nutrients. The fibre feed is ideal for those horses and ponies who are at rest or in light work. This feed is ideal for our two ponies as they only do lessons three times a week and the rest of the time they are in the field as we don't stable them so their work load is quite limited but they still need a little something as a token feed and to keep their condition maintained during the winter. Dengie colour code their bags of feed which certainly makes it easy to spot your bag in a warehouse or feed merchants. In this case the bag is the same colour (a goldy/brown/tan colour!) as Hi Fi Original but with the apple version there are images of red apples together with a lovely image of a shiny bay horse complete with bridle. The green Dengie logo is also on the front. On the back there is information on the feed itself together with feeding instructions. The feed comes in a polythene bag and to open it you simply run a knife down the top of the bag to open it. The feed is made of natural alfalfa (classed as a fibre feed) so when you open the bag what you get is simply small, thin pieces of dried alfalfa or if you don't know what alfalfa looks like, the feed can be compared to chopped up straw which isn't as golden but more of a dark tan colour. The apple pellets are small in size and contain real apple skins which is where the natural oxidants are mostly found. The apple aroma is certainly present when you open the bag and although quite sweet it is perfectly pleasant and you can see why it would be appealing to horses. According to Dengie: "The apple pellets complement the antioxidants found naturally in alfalfa to give a wide range of health benefits. This is equivalent to us eating our 5 portions of fruit and vegetables of different colours a day to ensure we receive a wide range of antioxidants." Feeding your horse or pony with this is relatively simple but it is important to know what weight your horse is to ensure you are providing them with enough of the Hi Fi. Please don't over or under feed your horse as this can lead to further issues. Of course if your horse struggles with their weight then adjust the amount you feed accordingly. Hi Fi Original with Apple can be fed on its own as the sole energy source but you will need to add a broad-spectrum vitamin and mineral supplement. You can of course feed this along with your horse's usual mix or nuts. Personally, I feed it alongside a basic mix during the winter and in the summer months they do get the Hi Fi just half the amount together with a handful of pony nuts as a reward, not very exciting but they seem to enjoy it! After trying the first bag with the ponies who I must admit are not fussy eaters I did decide to keep them on it just because they seem to enjoy it more with the apple pellets as before they would easily leave their dinners and pick at them whereas now within a few minutes their buckets are licked clean. Hi Fi Original with Apple is not a heating fibre feed so they remain cool and calm for their lessons which is essential when beginners are learning to ride! Because this is the Hi Fi version it has less calories and throughout the spring/ summer months when they don't need a big dinner this just helps keep them ticking over and ensuring they get the vitamins and minerals they need. During the winter they live out and do have hay put into their field for them but this again just ensures that they get everything they require and it keeps their condition as best as it can be. The feed is easy to use as it is simply scooped into the feed buckets and because it is a dry fibre feed there is no clumping so you don't waste any of it. I pour my bag into a large, clean dustbin and simply scoop what I need. The apple pellets are a nice addition to what would be a boring feed and my two certainly seem to enjoy it a lot more. They are happy and I am happy! Definitely a recommendation. ~ Useful Info ~ Ingredients: Cereal straw, Alfalfa, NIS pellets, Molasses, Apple pellets, Apple flavour, Mould Inhibitor. Hi Fi Original with Apple comes in a 20kg bag and retails at Dengie stockists from £8.50 to £10 per bag depending where you buy from. Read the complete review |

Dengie Alfa-A Oil
by Bonnierhythm I used to feed this to my rescued ex racing Thoroughbred mare up until she had to be put down last July. She had to be fed a very natural diet as due to previous neglect and abuse she was very prone to colic. It helped to keep weight on her without making her get too full of herself and it was one of the only feeds that didn't cause ... colic attacks. It is made from pure alfalfa that has been chopped and dried at high temperatures to keep the natural goodness and the coating of oil gives slow release energy. On a kg for kg basis it provides as much energy as a conditioning or competition mix/nut. It has additional Vitamin E which is a natural anti-oxidant and the alfalfa itself is a natural source of antioxidants. It can be fed on its own with a broad specrum vitamin and mineral supplement or with cubes or a mix. The process used to make it kills mould and it has a low dust content which makes it a great feed for horses with dust allergies. It comes in a 20kg bag and I used to pay about £10 for a bag which lasted about 2 months. It stores really well and can be bought from most horse feed suppliers. I tried feeding it to my native pony but it made her fat so it is good for horses doing a reasonable amount of work that need extra energy Read the complete review |
