Derby House Pegasus Print Turnout
by PerfectPeaches I've mentioned in a previous review that my cousin and I own two ex-riding school ponies who are in their teens. They live out all year round as it seems to suit them better than being stabled. They are both awful when it comes to keeping their rugs in one piece as they have a tendency to rip them a lot which means replacing them quite ... often. Fortunately with new pony ranges charging less than standard rugs it is now slightly cheaper to replace them - even cheaper if we can get them second hand! Having recently been impressed with Derby House's own range of rugs we had a look to see if they had anything suitable for the ponies in their sale. After having a look on their website we came across the Pegasus Print rug which although was a rug we wouldn't of picked simply due to the bright, colourful print it was reduced and came in the sizes we needed and it would replace their current rugs which had been repaired once too often! The Pegasus Print is from Derby House's own collection and is a turnout rug so it is only suitable for use in a field. As you can see from the picture the rug is white and features images of a unicorn all over the rug in bold, primary colours which certainly make the rug standard out compared to others! As I said this rug is for outdoor use only and has a 600 denier waterproof and breathable outer. Basically higher the denier then tougher the rug so this is pretty durable for use out in the field especially fields which are lined with bramble hedges! This rug is classed as a sheet and it has absolutely no fill to it whatsoever so not recommended if you are wanting a thick, warm rug. I personally use these rugs on the ponies during the spring months which just keeps them dry and comfortable without them overheating and sweating. The rug has a nylon lining throughout which helps keep their coat clean and smooth although it may cause slight rubbing on the shoulders as most rugs do. There is a fleece wither pad at the top of the rug which rests at the end of the mane and does reduce rubbing. In order to reduce any rubbing on the shoulder area then you can use a chest protector which can protect the coat from the rug itself. At the back of the rug there is a small tail flap which helps protect the horse or pony from the elements. There is a large enough shoulder gusset at the front of the rug which allows the horse to move about freely. The rug is fastened at the front by double reinforced buckles which are adjustable, they are further secured by touch tape fastenings which is effectively velcro. To help keep the rug secure there are two adjustable surcingles which cross under the horse's belly, it is important that these are not too tight or too loose in order to keep the horse comfortable and accident free. At the back of the rug there are adjustable and removable leg straps which cross in between the horse's back legs. Again it is vital that these are not too loose or too tight. All fastenings colour co-ordinate with the rug which is nice. Our two have worn this rug a couple of times as we have had a few warm days and they can overheat easily. I found that the fastenings are easy to adjust which is great when you are trying to change a rug on a pony who is insisting on walking whilst you sort the rug out in the field! The rug fits the ponies well enough as it can although on the one it gapes a little at the front and is a bit big in the chest but he is quite a narrow, slim pony whereas the other is a bit more chunky and it fits him far better. The rug seems quite deep on them and the front of the rug seems a little long but it doesn't affect how they walk in it. Overall, I really cant fault the rug as all rugs fit differently on horses and ponies and for the price paid I cant complain. It keeps the two ponies dry and warm which is what I wanted it to do. I just would have liked the smaller sizes of the rugs not to swamp the ponies so much as even though in length its fine, the depth seems a little too long. For that reason alone I can only award the rug 4 stars. As much as I don't really like the Pegasus print pattern it is quite sweet and suits the ponies but I doubt very much I'd put one of my big horses in the rug! I'd recommend this rug simply due to the price and because it is a sheet with no fill and it does the job. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Useful Info ~~~~~~~~~~ Availability: Derby House - online or in store Sizes: 3'9" to 7'3" Colour: Pegasus print with red binding Price: Was £40.84 now £27.99 Product code: 401-0066 Read the complete review |

Derby House Apple Medium Combo Rug
by PerfectPeaches Since acquiring a new horse who after much debate my cousin and I have decided to keep but put out on loan in the summer she has had to have a few new items added to her rather thin wardrobe. Due to not knowing what we were going to be doing we didn't want to spend a lot of money on rugs for her. One of my favourite ... equestrian retailers is Derby House and I have been purchasing from them for years. They always have great sales and this year they had a big rug sale where we managed to pick up several rugs for her which were greatly reduced in price. One rug she has started to wear since the weather has got slightly warmer is the Derby House Apple Medium Combo which we purchased at the beginning of the year for her. As you can see from the photo the rug has a print of green apples with one line of apples being cut in half. Personally I wouldn't have chosen this rug at the full price and we only bought it due to the price and the fact that is a medium weight rug which is what we needed - we just didn't want to spend a lot of money. The apple pattern is simply a bit of fun but like most turnout rugs it will soon be covered in mud! The rug is a turnout rug which is obviously for use in the field. It is classed as medium weight as it has 300 grams of warm polyfill, basically higher the polyfill means the warmer the rug and therefore is rug is classed as a medium weight, ideal for spring time as it keeps the horse warm without them overheating. The apple printed shell of the rug is a very durable and tough 900 denier outer which is both waterproof and breathable - ideal if the horse does get a little warm as it can be quite warm in the sun without any wind at this time of year. As you can see from the photo the rug does have a neck combo (cannot be removed) which is exactly the same material and thickness as the main part of the rug. On the inside of the rug there us a black cotton lining through the middle and nylon lining on the chest, tail and neck which helps prevent rubbing. However, even though this nylon lining is there do expect some rubbing as if a horse is wearing the rug for quite a lot of hours then rubbing is naturally going to happen. The cotton lining does however keep the coat nice and smooth and does give a glossy shine to the coat. The rug is fastened at the front by a double clip and buckle fastenings which are black in colour and are reinforced so incredibly strong, it really does take a lot of force for these to come away from the rug. The neck part of the rug is fastened by reinforced double buckles which ensure that the neck stays together and doesn't come loose. The rug features elasticated surcingles which cross under the horse's belly, these help keep the rug secure on the horse and in place. They are adjustable but cannot be removed from the rug. At the back of the rug there are removable leg straps which cross between the horse's legs, again these help to keep the rug secure and in place but they can be removed and replaced with a simple fillet string should you wish to remove them. What I really like about this rug is the large tail flap at the back of the rug which helps protect the horse from the elements when outside. It is a decent size and helps keep the horse comfortable should there be heavy rain or high winds. At the front of the rug there are shoulder gussets which allow the horse unrestricted movement in the field. If you have the correct size of rug on your horse then these should align with your horse's shoulder. My mare has been wearing this rug for a few weeks now as she was starting to get a bit too warm in her heavyweight combo rug. I found that the sizing of this rug was just right on her and it fits her perfectly. The neck comes to just before her ears and the tail flap sits just on the top of her tail. I found the fastenings are all easy to adjust should they need to be and the fasten securely. The weather has been quite nice for the past 10 days or so, so this rug hasn't really been put to the test under torrential rain but the rain we have had so far hasn't penetrated this rug and she has been kept warm and dry. I haven't had much to do with Derby House rugs in the past as I favour Weatherbeeta for my other horses but this rug has certainly exceeded my expectations. At the end of the day it keeps her warm and dry which is exactly what I/ you need in a turnout rug. Okay, I'm not a huge fan of the pattern but it is certainly a bit more colourful than your average turnout! If this rug hadn't of been in the sale I doubt I would have purchased it as I would of probably gone for a Weatherbeeta rug instead but due to its reasonable sale price it was hard not to buy it. Definitely a recommendation from me! ~~~~~~~~~ Useful Info ~~~~~~~~~ Availability: Derby House - in store and online Price: Was £74.54 now £37.27 Sizes: 4ft to 7ft - sizes may be limited due to sale Colour: Apple print only Product Code: 402-0182 Read the complete review |

Derbyhouse Heavyweight Combo Stable Rug
by PerfectPeaches Since taking on a new horse with my cousin (wasn't our choice to have another but it was a rescue) we have found that her tack and rugs are either too big, too small or completely useless. We have managed to salvage some items but a few things have had to be bought in order for the horse to keep warm, dry and comfortable and it is just ... typical that she isn't the same size of any our horses. Being on a budget we decided that because she is probably going to put out on loan we didn't want to spend a lot of money on rugs and equipment when eventually she will have a new loaner/ owner who can update her wardrobe should they wish. Because the horse is stabled she needed a new stable rug which was warm enough for her as she is clipped and which didn't break the bank. Fortunately Derbyhouse Saddlery have had plenty of well priced rugs in their sale so we managed to kit her out for under £100.00! On the of the rugs we had to buy was a decent, warm stable rug for her. We managed to get it in the Derby House sale and comes from Derby House's own range which neither me or my cousin had any first hand experience with until now! We had opted for the Derby House Heavyweight Stable Combo. We chose it partly down to the sale price and because we needed a thick, heavyweight stable rug with a neck attachment. The stable rug is classed as a heavyweight and comes complete with 420 denier channel quilted outer shell - basically higher the denier tougher the rug. It is the amount of filling which gives rugs their weight and for this particular rug there is 360 grams of polyfil making it an incredibly warm rug. The rug to hold and to carry is just like an ultra thick sleeping bag, it is light enough to carry around easily but it is quite bulky when folded up due to the thickness but ultimately this thickness keeps the horse nice and toasty whilst in the stable. As with all stable rugs it is not waterproof and not suitable to be used as a turnout rug. However, some people may use it as an under rug. The rug has enough fastenings to keep this secure on a horse. It features double buckled front fastenings which are adjustable and also reinforced so they are incredibly sturdy. There are two surcingles which cross under the horse's belly, these help keep the rug in place and secure without too much slipping. The surcingles are fully adjustable but cannot be removed from the rug. Most stable rugs do not have leg straps and this is no different as there is a colour matching fillet string which goes under the horse's tail (should not be too loose or too tight). For me a fillet string doesn't really add much to the rug and is a bit useless as it is not heavy enough to keep a rug in place so for me I tend to remove fillet strings on a stable rug. The rug only comes in molten lava which is basically a bright orange/ red with a thin black check design over it. Something I wouldn't have chosen if there was a choice but for the price I wasn't going to be picky! The neck attachment of the rug is exactly the same material and thickness as the main rug and goes up to the horse's ears. It cannot be removed from the rug and shouldn't be left undone on a horse once in the stable, it should always be fastened. The neck rug is done up by two velcro fastenings which are strong and durable. The rug features a very soft black, cotton lining which keeps the horse's coat smooth and clean. There is a large tail flap at the back of the rug, normally tail flaps protect from the elements but when in the stable they help keep the rug warm. Even though movement in the stable is limited the rug does have two large shoulder gussets which do not restrict movement. I've never owned a Derby House rug as I have always opted for my favourite brand which I am very loyal to. However, since purchasing this rug I really can't fault it whatsoever. All the fastenings adjust easily and are sewn extremely tightly on the rug so I can't see those coming loose. The rug fits the new horse well although it does gape a bit at the front but she isn't the biggest built horse so that was somewhat expected. The neck part of the rug fits her well and fits just behind her ears and there is still a little room so it isn't too tight on her. It manages to keep her nice and warm and when I come to take the rug off in the morning she is warm but not overly hot and certainly hasn't sweated. The rug hasn't rubbed her although most rugs do eventually especially on the mane. This really has been a great buy and the quality of the rug is brilliant. Definitely a stable rug I would recommend to those looking for a new rug and don't want to break the bank! ~~~~~~~~ Useful Info ~~~~~~~~ Brand: Derby House - purchase online or in store Size Range: 5ft6 to 7ft 3 - sizes limited due to sale Price: Was £59.99 Now £49.99 Colour: Molten Lava Read the complete review |
