Equilibrium Stretch & Flex Training Wraps
by Oddbodd I have used Stretch and Flex Training wraps for several years now and have not found another product which compares. At around £40-50 a pair they are pretty expensive, but I have used mine and washed them and used them and washed them and they are still going strong. If you are looking for leg protection which goes around ... the fetlock but without either the thickness of most neoprene 'sports boots' or the inconvenience of bandaging then these are perfect. Some say they also offer gentle support but this is an issue on which there are varying opinions, ie can boots/bandages really offer any support to a horse's ligaments? This is yet to be proven either way. Personally I like to err on the side of caution for a horse which has had a couple of injuries in the past, so I use these for schooling. They are a little like bandages in the protection they offer in that they give protection and perhaps support without being restrictive. They are thick enough to protect from knocks but not so thick that horses' legs unduly sweat underneath them. The material also has raised 'bumps' (you can see this on the picture) to reduce sweating. I find that they fit really well, moulding to the shape of the horses' legs, and stay in place perfectly. Furthermore, no school surface ever gets inside them which is often the case with other types of boot. You can get them in black and white. White isn't the most practical of colours (although it looks the part!) but, although the instructions say handwash only, I put them in the machine on a low heat gentle cycle and they wash up fine although they are not as brilliant white as they were when new. I always hang them to dry though, have never tumbled them. They do seem to stretch a little over time. Be aware though that these are not like brushing boots - there is no strike pad and they are not very thick - so protection is really more against gentle knocks. I wouldn't use them for jumping as for that I prefer boots which offer more protection against striking. Read the complete review |

Equilibrium Stretch & Flex Exercise Bandages
by PerfectPeaches The range of horse related equipment I have is incredibly vast. I could probably open up my own store! However, with having three horses I have quite a lot of stuff of all shapes and sizes! Fortunately when it comes to leg wear they all tend to share which is great as I don't need three sets of boots or bandages! I am a big fan of ... Equilibrium products as they suit my horses. One item I have bought and liked immediately are the Stretch & Flex Exercise Bandages. They were given to me as a birthday present as I had been wanting them for a while but with needing other things which were more important these were put on the birthday list in the hope someone would get them for me! It is important to protect the horse's legs as they can get injured easily. You can either use boots or bandages and even though I use boots I do like using bandages on my horses as even though they can be a pain to put on they can be less restrictive as boots. The Stretch & Flex Exercise Bandages have been designed by Equilibrium to reduce the build up of heat through using technological materials. For me this is ideal as my one horse sweats as soon as he sees his saddle! The bandages offer maximum leg support whilst keeping the legs cool at the same time. The bandages are designed to allow freedom of movement which is needed when getting the horse to work correctly without them being restricted. The outer material of the bandages are made from an open weave fabric (helps with circulation of air through the bandage) which has a four way stretch. The bandages are made with Equilibrium's cool space fabric and at least 50% of the bandages have this cool space fabric which provide support and cushioning without being bulky. The cool space fabric is incredibly soft and flexible and this is what is needed to reduce the build up of heat. Best of all you don't need to put a liner underneath the bandages as you would with normal exercise bandages. Trying to get bandages on a horse can be a bit of a hassle but with the Stretch & Flex Exercise Bandages you can get different lengths which ensure they will fit your horse correctly. They also have left and right legs so the logo will face the correct way up when you get to the end of the bandage which is incredibly useful! Should you have problems getting the bandage on there are clear instructions on how you can put the bandage on! Because of this and the correct bandage length this will minimise uneven application of the bandage which again will contribute towards fluid, free movement as there wont be added pressure on the leg. For me, these bandages are easily applied but I did read the instructions just to make sure I was putting them on the right legs and most importantly putting them on correctly. But as I said above the logos and clear instructions make it incredibly easy and once you've put them on once you won't have a problem again. What is important is that you don't put them on too loose or too tight as this will be uncomfortable for the horse. The bandages should fit from the horse's heel to just below the knee (as shown on the picture). When using the bandages when riding my horse I noticed he was able to really stretch his legs out without being too restricted and he was able to free his shoulders up a lot easier than when he wears boots. When I took the bandages off his legs they weren't nearly as sweaty as I they normally would be but best thing of all the bandages weren't wet either. They had cleared wicked away all the sweat and moisture which is great as horse's hate being sweaty and uncomfortable. The bandages are easily washable and just need popping into the washing machine with a mild detergent and they come up as good as new. The Equilibrium Stretch & Flex Exercise Bandages are available in white, black, pale blue and burgundy and come in four sizes (small 2.5m, medium 3m, long 3.5m and extra long 4m). They currently cost around £24.99 which I think is a very reasonable price. They are readily available from all Equilibrium retailers both online or in store (Derbyhouse is one). For me these are a great product and I use them regularly even throughout the winter as my horse still sweats just as much! They are east to put on and look less bulky than regular exercise bandages and are machine washable which is even better. For me these are great and I would recommend them to any horse owner as an alternative to brushing boots. Read the complete review |

Equilibrium Stretch & Flex Training Wraps
by PerfectPeaches When horses are young and are starting to be broken in and worked there joints, muscles and ligaments all need looking after especially in the early days just like humans who start at a gym or start a sport you all need that extra support to ensure you don't pull, strain or tear anything. Horses are no different and for me when horses ... are such an expensive initial purchase their wellbeing is imperative and I want to ensure that they stay in the best condition possible. When my one horse Hugo was a youngster he was incredibly unbalanced and would knock himself regularly in the field. When it came to finally exercising him I wanted to ensure that his legs were properly protected as no doubt there would still be a few knocks throughout his initial training and I want to take care of his legs. There are all sorts of boots to protect horses legs on the market from brushing boots, over reach boots to open front tendon boots but I wanted something that would provide support but would be light for him to wear. After a bit of looking around I finally opted for the Equilibrium Stretch and Flex Training Wraps. They are apparently suitable for when the horse needs extra protection and support which is exactly what I wanted. The training wraps offer a great amount of support, comfort and protection which is what any horse owner would want in a wrap/ boot. Equilibrium claim that the training wraps are ideal for young horses, big moving horses, those recovering from injury, spooky horses and the accident prone. This sold me straight away as Hugo being a young horse has been known to be accident prone! As you can see from the picture the training wraps are quite long and fit over the fetlock which gives this area of the leg even greater support than a standard wrap or boot. Apart from the fetlock strap giving extra support it also helps to prevent dirt from getting under the wrap thereby avoiding rubbing and irritation. This is one thing I do like as the arena at my yard is made of tiny bits of rubber which do get under standard boots. The boots are incredibly soft and light which makes them ideal on the horse. They are also skin tight but because they are so light and flexible it means the horse can move without restriction and can therefore give fluid movement. The straps on the wraps are fastened by velcro and are incredibly secure once fastened (just need to make sure you don't get too much dirt/hay/straw etc in the velcro as this will prevent the straps fastening properly. The material of the training wraps is incredibly similar to neoprene and has a bobble affect to it (see picture). The boots are actually made from breathable stomatex which helps to regulate the skin temperature - basically hotter the horse more breathable the wrap. This makes it great in the warm months when horses sweat quickly. Normally when wearing normal brushing boots I find that Hugo's legs sweat a lot under the boots but during the warmer months wearing the training wraps his legs barely glisten and the wrap is still quite dry. Washing these boots are incredibly easy as they either just need a good dunking in a bucket of warm water or put in the washing machine on a quick rinse and they come out as good as new. The wraps offer flexible protection that moulds to the exact contours of the horse's legs allowing complete freedom of movement. After a few rocky weeks with Hugo when we started his initial training I found that he was able to really stretch his legs and work properly. He was able to use his muscles properly and really extend his front legs which was exactly what I was wanting. He was able to move unrestricted which allowed him to balance himself out rather than get flustered and knock into himself. I still use the wraps on him as I like the level of protection they give and that they are so incredibly light and easy to use. Standard brushing boots I find can be a bit restrictive on certain horses (another of my horses seems to cope just fine with brushing boots) and on Hugo they just don't seem to suit him as he much prefers the level of freedom when he is working, maybe that's because he is young but as long as he is working properly, using his muscles effectively and is fully protected then I can't complain about these wraps at all! The training wraps are only available in black and white and they come in five sizes:- 1 - small 2N* - medium narrow 2 - medium 3 - large 4 - extra large It is incredibly important that you get the correct size for your horse and should you need to get sizing information give Equilibrium a call on +44 (0) 1442 879115 or email info@equilibriumproducts.com. The training wraps are available from all good Equilibrium stockists and cost around £45 - £54 for a pair depending on where you get them from. They are initially expensive but mine are now two years old and are still going strong. Definitely recommended, even with the high price tag! Read the complete review |
