Dermoline Medicated Horse Shampoo
by PerfectPeaches Like most animals when they shed their winter coats for their summer ones there is always that horrible transition of scurfy skin which even though after a few days it tends to disappear it still isn't nice. My dogs are fortunately short haired so it isn't noticeable and the same goes for my cats but my horses are the one that seem to ... have this scurfy problem, especially one in particular who has quite a thick coat due to his breeding. Around the time of him shedding his thick, velvet coat he seems to really struggle getting rid of the last little bits and ends up with a slightly scurfy coat. As much as grooming can take care of getting rid of his winter coat I also like to take care of his skin. There are plenty of antibacterial shampoos on the market which can help with scurfy coats but the one I used this year was Dermoline Medicated shampoo which is designed to help coat condition and leave it scurf free. Dermoline Medicated shampoo is made by a company called Battles. They provide products for equines, poultry and smallholdings as well as household goods. They do a range of great shampoos for horses but I opted for the medicated shampoo as I wanted something condition his coat but get rid of the flaky scurf he was getting (which he happens to get every year he sheds his coat). The shampoo comes in a white bottle with a flip top lid. All the shampoos are in the standard white bottle but they are colour coded with the label. The medicated shampoo has a red and dark blue label which has the product info on it. The shampoo has quite a medicinal aroma which is quite pleasant. It certainly isn't too overpowering and the aroma gets less and less once the shampoo is diluted. The shampoo is easy to apply. You simply apply it directly onto the coat which is ideally damp and you massage in gently but with a firm hand. The shampoo lathers up easily and you soon get white soapy bubbles appearing from where you have massaged. You don't need to use too much as a little goes a long way and you don't want to spend a long time rinsing it off either! Once finished you just simply need to rinse it off thoroughly (you don't want to leave any soap on the coat as it could irritate the skin) and leave to dry. I used this shampoo this year and I used it every other day on my horses coat after giving it a good groom. I found that this shampoo really did reduce the amount of scurf and it also kept the coat looking healthy and shiny which was great. Instead of spending weeks trying to sort his coat out in past years this took me around 7-10 days to get his coat looking at its best again. Dermoline Medicated Shampoo is available at most equestrian retailers as well as being readily available online. The shampoo is available in two different sizes; 500ml and a refill 5 litre bottle. You can get the 500ml bottle for around £4.95 and the 5 litre bottle for around £20.00 which I think is priced well. Because you don't need to use a lot for every application one bottle lasts for quite sometime. I would definitely recommend this shampoo for those horses who have horses who do suffer with a scurfy coat as I found it really effective and with proper grooming my horses coat was fresh and scurf free. Oster Stiff Grooming Brush
by PerfectPeaches When it comes to my grooming kit for my horses it is quite large and extensive after years and years of collecting and hoarding brushes and products. After being introduced to the Oster range of brushes my collection was now rapidly becoming taken over by Oster brushes and my old faithful brushes (which did need chucking out) were ... getting replaced by new and modern versions. Oster is a company who design and manufacture grooming products not just for the equine world but also for hairdressers and barbers. They also do a range of equipment for dog groomers. Their equine range has been available in the UK now for a few years and is incredibly poplar. However, a lot of competing manufacturers have also started to copy their style. One brush that I find incredibly useful is the Oster Stiff Grooming Brush. There is nothing worse than when your horse has rolled in mud and it is caked on to the point you think you will need to chisel it off. You generally have to use a few different brushes to try and get the hardened mud off which works but after taking a long time! This is where the Oster Stiff Grooming Brush comes in! It is an incredibly durable body brush, it is suitable for every part of the horse, except the face. The bristles are quite thick and incredibly stiff, it certainly isn't the softest brush on the market but it's not meant to be. The stiff bristles manage to get rid of the mud with a bit of gentle force albeit leaving a bit of a dusty coat! The brush is ideal for horses who come in covered in mud and dirt but I've found it is also great to use when my horses have dried from being washed off after being ridden. For me this brush is great and rather than having many brushes to use in order to rid the horse of the dry mud this brush does the job of about five brushes all rolled into one! The brush has an ergonomic design with a comfort grip handle which makes holding the brush incredibly easy and it doesn't hurt your hand when grooming, especially when trying to get dried mud off takes a bit of time and effort. The brush itself is incredibly durable and mine is now a few years old and looks in great condition but then I do regularly wash and clean my brushes. So far the bristles have stayed in place and none of have come out. The Oster Stiff Grooming Brush is available at various equestrian retailers and readily available online and costs around £10.50 - £11.50 which is slightly expensive for a stiff body brush and there are cheaper options available from other manufacturers but for me I'm a big fan of Oster brushes and its tough and durable whereas other cheaper versions don't seem to last that well. Oster Mane and Tail Brush
by PerfectPeaches When it comes to grooming products for horses there seems to be hundreds on the market now. When I was a lot younger the choice was limited and you had a range of about three brushes. Nowadays you can have over ten brushes in your grooming kit each one having its own individual purpose. About four years ago I was introduced ... to Oster brushes as a friend of mine absolutely raved about them. The Oster brand began way back in 1924 by a Mr John Oster who originally created a hand operated hair clipper. The company later created items for the grooming industry mainly for hairdressers, barbers and even the equine industry. After going into my local tack shop which stocked a small selection of the grooming equipment I noticed that the brushes looked incredibly different to all of the other brushes available. Knowing that I needed to update my grooming kit I opted for several of the brushes. One of which was the mane and tail brush. The Oster Mane and Tail brush comes in two different colours at the moment; blue and pink. I opted for the blue as pink has only been available more recently. The brush is exactly how it is on the picture, it has a specially designed comfort handle which is meant to reduce hand fatigue. The main brush has a round flat face which helps brush the mane and tail in multi directions. The brush is basically designed to reduce less tangles, hair breakage and damage to both the mane and tail. The brush is incredibly solid but smooth and easy to hold which makes grooming a tail incredibly easy as if you have a horse with a thick and/ or wavy tail it makes the job a lot easier and takes a lot less time. The bristles are also quite sturdy and made from quite a tough plastic type material, they bend when going through the mane or tail but they remain quite rigid. My Oster mane and tail brush is now four years old and it hasn't lost a single bristle yet. I find that using this brush makes grooming a lot easier especially as one of my horses has a really thick tail. It's great when a mane and tail has been freshly washed and is still wet as it manages to get through the mane or tail with hardly any knots or tangles but its tough enough to get rid of any without pulling any hair out (which a lot of brushes tend to do). The result is an easy to brush tail which stays brushable! I use it every day on all of my horses and I find that every time I groom with the brush it gets easier. The Oster Mane and Tail brush is available online and in most good equestrian retailers. It now comes in blue/grey and pink/grey and costs on average about £8.50. For me this brush has been a real godsend as it has saved me a lot of time when grooming the horses. It has also helped keep their manes and tails in better condition. The brush also lasts which is great, even four years later it still looks in great condition and certainly won't need to be replaced for quite some time. I would definitely recommend this to all horse owners. Read the complete review |
