Thorowgood T4 GP Cob Saddle
by Bonnierhythm I bought a Thorogood T4 GP Cob saddle for my Dartmoor hill pony mare last year, it cost me £250. Thorogood have been making saddle for 21 years and their senior saddlemakers are SMS approved Master Saddlers which ensures quality craftsmanship. Thorowgood's synthetic saddles are the only ones that are NOT mass-manufactured in ... the Far East or India. The saddles are approved by The Veteran Horse Society and The Pony Club. The materials that they use are designed and developed by a team of graduate industrial designers. The T4 is part of an award winning range and is designed to look like leather. They have a suede effect seat to stop you moving around in the saddle and soft suede effect knee rolls for the rider's comfort. The saddle has broad hand-stuffed panels the change to the shape of your horse's back after a few months of use and they are cut in a way that allows free shoulder movement, enabling your horse to move freely and comfortably. The front gussets are slimmed down and the rear gussets are shorter so the saddle is designed to fit on the reduced available saddle fitting space caused by excess fat on the shoulder and loins. This is also useful for horses with low withers. The girth straps can be taken off so that they can be moved around so that the saddle can fit a horse even if their saddle normally slides forwards, backwards or sideways. This is quite an easy procedure when you get the hang of it. I was a bit confused with the first strap change but had got the hang of it by the second one. The knee rolls are attached with velcro so they can be moved around to suit the rider. It comes in black or brown and in sizes 17", 17.5" and 18". Thorogood saddles have the "fish" system and this is no different. The plastic "fish" slot into a pocket just below the point of the tree. They are a bit difficult to get in at first but can be easily pulled out with a hoof pick. The "fish" system allows you to alter the fit of the saddle quickly by adjusting the thickness of the panels. This means you do not need to adjust the gullet angle if your horse loses a bit of weight and still maintains wither clearance. The gullet width of the saddle can easily be changed by removing the 4 screws in the front of the panel, changing the gullet bar and doing the screws back up again. My grandad did this for me and didn't swear so it can;t have been too hard. There are 7 different widths available and each width bar is a different colour so you can easily change the difference. You can get: Narrow/medium (green) Medium (black) Medium/wide (blue) Wide (red) Wide/X Wide (yellow) X Wide (white) XX Wide (Grey) The saddle just needs to be wiped over with a wet sponge to clean it which takes away all the long cleaning and conditioning associated with a leather saddle. Both my pony and I found this saddle comfortable both for flat work and jumping. I did find that as Carrie had no withers at the time the saddle did tend to slide forward a bit when jumping. She has since grown and the saddle fits her well now. It is nice to know that I can adjust it when necessary as she changes shape as she is only 6, without buying a new saddle everytime. I had the saddle fitted by a professional saddle fitter and it came with an XX wide gullet but you can buy other sizes for about £12 each. It is also nice to know that as I ride in my western saddle most of the time now that this saddle will fit my arab filly when she is old enough to back without too much hassle. Thorowgood T4 GP Cob Saddle
by horseygirl2010 I don't have a T4 but I did have a Thorowgood Maxam Cob, they are very nice saddles, lightweight which makes tacking up easier and also more comfortable for the horse. The material is easily wiped down so it requires less maintenance than a traditional leather saddle. It also comes in a huge choice of sizes. Unfortunatly I had to re-sell ... mine as it didn't fit my horse, but I would definetly buy one again. The newer models are completly adjustable, they have adjustable gullets and also FISH inserts to adjust the width slightly which is useful if your horse gains or loses weight or muscle. The cob versions also usually have a fourth girth strap to help keep the saddle in place on rounder horses. You can find the older models very cheap secondhand, the newer models are quite expensive but still a lot cheaper than a custom made saddle, but of course the horses comfort should be priority rather than price, as an ill-fitting saddle can cause back pain which in turn can be the cause of behaviour such as bucking. Anyway, I'd definetly recommend these saddles as they are reasonably priced but also top quality and there is a huge range with a saddle to suit most horses and ponies. Read the complete review |

Thorowgood T4 GP Cob Saddle
by Sugardooyoo Thorowgood make a variety of saddles to fit in their different ranges to fit different shaped horse/ponies and budgets. The T4 is their mid range offering made of synthetic materials rather than the traditional leather. Synthetic saddles a easier to care for and much lighter than leather saddles although they have a shorter life ... span. A cob is a type (not a breed apart from Welsh Cobs) of wide short legged weigh carrying horse/pony usually with a very flat, wide back and having little or no withers which can make finding a saddle that will fit and actually stay in place a bit of a nightmare. As we already owned a Thorowgood "High wither Griffin" (the T4's predecessor) saddle for our thoroughbred mare and were very happy with fit, comfort and quality we decided on the new T4 Cob saddle when it came time to break our young barrel shaped welsh cob. This new saddle also came with what Thorowgood calls it's "fish" system of different sized inserts to alter the width of the saddle to accommodate the way a horse changes size and shape throughout the year due to different work loads and muscle development which we though would be ideal for a young growing pony. This saddle was properly fitted by a saddler and was very comfortable for both the pony and rider and very light and easy to handle. We ended up with an XXX wide for our cob! The saddle is synthetic leather with the seat and knee rolls being made of non slip synthetic suede material. To clean the T4 you only need to wipe it over with a damp sponge, much faster than saddle soaping... It takes a few hours of riding to properly bed the saddle in and in that time it moulds to the shape of your horse/pony. If they loose weight you can narrow the saddle fit by inserting the special "fish" (red plastic ovals) into the pockets on the underside of the saddle. One thing that I did notice about this saddle is that the quality of the finish and the actual materials used is not as nice as it was with Thorowgoods previous saddle the "Griffin" The griffin looks like a leather/suede saddle at first glance but there is no way that you would mistake the T4 for one, the overall visual impression is one of budget quality. This may be because Thorowgood are now making a more expensive T6 saddle which looks exactly like a leather one. After a few months we had to change to a different saddle as our pony became much wider through his shoulders as he matured and although we could make the T4 narrower with the fish inserts we could not make the saddle any wider than it was. We went for a "Saddle Company Verona" which is a bonded leather and synthetic saddle (so still light weight) but the width of the entire tree of the saddle can be adjusted as many times as needed by a Saddle Company fitter so can go wider or narrower as the horse changes. Although much more expensive it looks and feels much nicer than the T4. To sum up I would buy another T4 (probably second hand) if I needed a cheap saddle for breaking in a youngster with. If I wanted a saddle for an established animal I would look elsewhere. Read the complete review |
