My one horse is a fleabitten grey (for those none horsey it's a grey or white horse with flecks of dark brown or black) with a white and dark grey mane and tail. Due to his colour he can look a bit grubby and especially in the winter he manages to look like a swamp monster despite the layers of rugs he has on.
During the warmer months I shampoo him regularly, even in the colder months his tail is regularly washed and I find to get his coat looking its best I can't rely on just any old shampoo. In my lotions and potions box I have various bottles of shampoos which are made specifically for grey horses. They all generally work the same and give the same results which is fine by me and hopefully my horse!
The one shampoo I picked up recently was Gallop for Grey Horses which is a shampoo from a range by Carr & Day & Martin. The Gallop range of shampoos are all designed for various colours of horses which is great as they all contain colour enhancing ingredients which bring out the best in any coat colour whether you have a grey, black, chestnut or even palomino horse.
Gallop Grey Shampoo comes in a clear bottle and is bright royal blue in colour and has a silver screw on cap. It has the word "Gallop" written vertically in white font. The fragrance is pleasant and fragrant which gives a nice scent to a freshly washed horse or tail. It has a typical shampoo consistency (medium) which doesn't drip easily which means you can get it straight onto the horse easily without it dripping through your fingers.
The shampoo as I said is a bright blue colour which did alarm me at first as when I applied it to his coat for the first time he ended up a shade of pale blue! But after massaging it in and working up a baby blue lather the blue rinse he seemed to have soon disappeared. The shampoo lathers up easily and you don't need to use a lot for it to go a long way. When it comes to rinsing it off, I found that it rinsed off easily but like all shampoos I have come across you really need to over rinse to ensure all the shampoo has gone as leaving shampoo on the horses coat can irritate it.
After leaving the coat to dry (and tail) his coat was a lovely, bright white colour and was really soft to the touch as well as having a nice aroma (which doesn't last long with horses!). I wasn't expecting miracles with the shampoo but the grass stains he had were easily removed and his coat certainly looked a lot whiter.
Gallop Grey Shampoo comes in a 500ml plastic bottle and Carr & Day & Martin advise that one 500ml bottle will provide up to 10 washes this obviously may vary depending on the size of your horse!
Gallop Grey Shampoo is available from most equine retailers such as Robinsons, Countrywide etc and costs between £6 - £7 for a 500ml bottle which is a similar price to other shampoos on the market which offer to do the same thing.
