When it comes to cleaning my bridles and saddles I must admit I am incredibly lazy which is certainly not a good thing when the price of leather items are not cheap and I should take far better care of them than I do. I go through sudden urges of cleaning all my tack so it is absolutely sparkling and then leave it for months without cleaning it. Obviously since having a baby tack cleaning is not really my priority but as I'm currently at home more I've decided to give everything a real good clean.
I have all the usual leather cleaning products that one could need to clean leather saddles and bridles but the one thing that has come in very useful over the past few months when I've been trying to keep on top of the cleaning are the Carr Day & Martin leather cleaning wipes. I find them incredibly useful to use to keep on top of tack cleaning just to keep the leather soft and supple without cracking. I have spent far too much money on leather bridles and saddles just to see them dry and crack!
The wipes come in a clear plastic pack and contain 15 wipes. The wipes are all individually packaged and come in a tan coloured packaging with a saddle depicted on the front. The wipes are intended to condition, protect and help keep leather supple. Within the wipe is a clear, pure soap which is made from vegetable oils and glycerine which is ideal for frequent use as it won't damage the leather at all. CDM recommend that you use these wipes after their Step 1 Belvoir Tack Cleaner but I find these just as effective when using them on their own (as long as the leather is reasonably clean to start off with as using a wipe on very dirty tack won't give good results).
To use the wipe you simply need to remove the wipe from its individual sachet, unfold it fully and wipe over the dirty leather using both sides of the wipe. Simples! These wipes can also be used on synthetic leather but test this on a hidden area before use just in case it causes a reaction.
I generally use the wipe when the bridle and saddle has been taken off the horse after they have been exercised. I quickly wipe the saddle and/ or bridle over with a damp sponge and then use the wipe to basically maintain the suppleness of the leather. By using a damp sponge I have removed any excess dirt and sweat and by the time I have opened the sachet and removed the wipe the leather has dried and I can simply use the wipe and put my tack away knowing that it has been protected. However, the wipes are not a replacement for proper tack cleaning which I am going to force myself to do at least twice a month as there really is no excuse for not doing it more often!
The wipes are available both online and in store at most equestrian stores. They come in packs of 15 and cost around £4 - £5 for a pack. I don't use a wipe every time my bridle or saddle has been used, probably every other time as it can be an expensive way of cleaning leather items but for me I find them incredibly useful.
Overall, I think these leather wipes are great and ideal if like me you can be slightly lazy at cleaning leather items. I also find them particularly useful when I was previously attending competitions as they would bring up my bridles and saddles really well and judges love a horse, its owner and tack looking well turned out! I think these are a must for any horse owner as they just are so handy and they cut down the time you spend on cleaning tack.
