      An apple flavoured treat

When it comes to competing my horses I always have what seems like a ridiculously large amount of equipment with me but one thing I cannot forget is a bag of treats! Out of everything they are the one thing which rewards my horses for their hard work. I tend to take a whole bag with me as I tend to 'over treat' my boys but they are putting in a lot of effort for me so I see the treats as a thank you.

I always have a few bags of treats in stock at my yard purposely for my competitions and recently I packed a bag of Effol Apple Crunchies. Effol in the equestrian world are more well known for their hoof products than they are their treats but just like their other products the treats are great.

There are several varieties of Effol treats but I opted for the apple flavoured ones as lets face it horses and ponies like apples! The treats come in a polythene type bag which features images of apples and has a window at the front so you can see what the crunchies actually look like. On the back there is an ingredients list, feeding guidelines etc. The bag is not re-sealable so your best bet is to put them in an airtight container.

The crunchies are circular in shape which are slightly domed on one side. They are around the size of a 50p piece which makes them easy to bite into. The texture looks just like biscotti so although quite hard they can be easily crumbled. On opening the bag you get a heavy scent of a synthetic apple flavour which you associate with car air freshners! It is very sweet but very appealing to horses! You get quite a lot in the bag which is great as one bag will last quite a while.

The Apple Crunchies are actually quite a healthy treat which is obviously great for the horse or pony. They contain calcium and vitamins A, D3 and E which all look after the overall health of the equine. As I mentioned above that the consistency is quite hard this is also great as it can help clean the horse's teeth due to the hardness which is obviously great for the horse.

As with all treats they do need to be fed carefully and it is best not to feed a lot all at one time. I tend to feed my boys about three at any one time due to the size of the crunchie and because my horses are all quite large (all are 17hh +) whereas a small pony will only need one but I do think sometimes I am being a bit stingy. However, when I am at a show they do get more as they are doing a lot more work and standing around a lot.

Due to the size my boys can easily eat these treats within a few seconds and it isn't long until you hear the crunch as they have bitten into them. My lot don't have a problem eating them but I do think older horses or ponies may find these tad too hard to bite into. The strong, sweet apple smell is certainly enticing to them and they do know when I have the treats in my pockets as they can smell them easily!

Overall, these a certainly a nice treat to reward horses and ponies. They are healthy and what I really like about them is that they help clean the teeth. I really can't complain about the treats the only thing I do have a gripe about is that the bag doesn't re-seal which is a pain as if they are left out they can go stale but I'm sure the horse wouldn't mind! You can purchase Effol Apple Crunchies at most feed merchants, equine pet stores and online. For a 500g expect to pay around £3.20 per bag.
