When it comes to grooming products for horses there seems to be hundreds on the market now. When I was a lot younger the choice was limited and you had a range of about three brushes. Nowadays you can have over ten brushes in your grooming kit each one having its own individual purpose.
About four years ago I was introduced to Oster brushes as a friend of mine absolutely raved about them. The Oster brand began way back in 1924 by a Mr John Oster who originally created a hand operated hair clipper. The company later created items for the grooming industry mainly for hairdressers, barbers and even the equine industry.
After going into my local tack shop which stocked a small selection of the grooming equipment I noticed that the brushes looked incredibly different to all of the other brushes available. Knowing that I needed to update my grooming kit I opted for several of the brushes. One of which was the mane and tail brush.
The Oster Mane and Tail brush comes in two different colours at the moment; blue and pink. I opted for the blue as pink has only been available more recently. The brush is exactly how it is on the picture, it has a specially designed comfort handle which is meant to reduce hand fatigue. The main brush has a round flat face which helps brush the mane and tail in multi directions. The brush is basically designed to reduce less tangles, hair breakage and damage to both the mane and tail.
The brush is incredibly solid but smooth and easy to hold which makes grooming a tail incredibly easy as if you have a horse with a thick and/ or wavy tail it makes the job a lot easier and takes a lot less time. The bristles are also quite sturdy and made from quite a tough plastic type material, they bend when going through the mane or tail but they remain quite rigid. My Oster mane and tail brush is now four years old and it hasn't lost a single bristle yet.
I find that using this brush makes grooming a lot easier especially as one of my horses has a really thick tail. It's great when a mane and tail has been freshly washed and is still wet as it manages to get through the mane or tail with hardly any knots or tangles but its tough enough to get rid of any without pulling any hair out (which a lot of brushes tend to do). The result is an easy to brush tail which stays brushable! I use it every day on all of my horses and I find that every time I groom with the brush it gets easier.
The Oster Mane and Tail brush is available online and in most good equestrian retailers. It now comes in blue/grey and pink/grey and costs on average about £8.50.
For me this brush has been a real godsend as it has saved me a lot of time when grooming the horses. It has also helped keep their manes and tails in better condition. The brush also lasts which is great, even four years later it still looks in great condition and certainly won't need to be replaced for quite some time. I would definitely recommend this to all horse owners.
