      A great all purpose rug

I always keep an eye out for a bargain especially when it comes to the horses as they are notoriously expensive when it comes to their equipment (not to mention their general upkeep!). On a visit earlier this year to my local Countrywide Store I was desperate to have a look in their bargains section! After rifling through piles of horse rugs I found neatly packed in its Weatherbeeta rug bag a Weatherbeeta Landa Original rug in my horses size! Fortunately all my horses tend to be the same size with rugs so they can all share!

I find it incredibly useful having spare rugs especially during the winter as I don't like putting a wet (or damp) rug on my horse the next morning as the rugs sometimes don't dry out completely in a cold night.

The Weatherbeeta Landa Original combo rug is an updated version of the typical New Zealand/ turn out rug which at one point only ever came in either a blue or green canvas. It is a medium weight rug with a 220g polyfill (higher the polyfill the warmer the rug). The rug itself is lovely and quilted and you can instantly feel the warmth once you put it on the horse. It has a lovely soft anti rub nylon lining, which is colour co-ordinated with the rug. The rug is a combo (a standard version is also available should you not want the extended neck) and the attached neck goes right to the base of the ears. The neck rug is fastened by two Velcro straps which fit nicely on Velcro attached to the other side of the neck rug and fastened by heavy duty fabric so the straps don't become unstuck. The neck rug can be easily unfastened and placed back against the rug, but don't put the horse out in the field without the neck rug properly fastened.

So what makes this rug such good value?

Its fabric:- It has Weatherbeeta's ripstop technology which is 600 denier (higher the denier tougher the fabric) making it incredibly tough and shouldn't rip easily. It is waterproof with taped seams making the rug 110% watertight ensuring that your horse is kept fully dry and comfortable when in the rain. The rug is made from breathable fabric meaning that hopefully your horse won't overheat but keeping an eye on how warm your horse is, is the best thing.

Anything else? Yes....the rug has traditional side gussets, these are at the shoulder of the horse and ensure the horse has fluid movement when out in the field. If you have read my review on the Weatherbeeta Freestyle Landa you will see that on this Original Landa the gussets are a lot larger. The tail flap on this rug is of a good size but not as big as on the Freestyle rug as that rug has the wraparound tail flap, meaning the horse has more protection from the elements. That for me is the only downside to this rug.

The Weatherbeeta Landa Original comes with colour co-ordinating surcingles and leg straps. These ensure the rug is held in place on the horse and are fully adjustable. The leg straps are removable should you not want them on the rug. The front straps are made by tough, reinforced fabric and the buckles are supposed to be anti-rust and so far mine haven't!

The Original Landa is a great alternative to the Freestyle Landa Combo which is slightly more expensive and there are hardly any differences in the two. The rug which I did buy as a spare has been used a lot on all of my horses as it fits them all perfectly. I like having a rug with an anti-rub lining as other rugs have rubbed the hair off my horses chest and shoulders. This lining is incredibly soft and it leaves the coat clean and with a nice shine.

The rug is available in the very traditional navy and green but new for 2010 is navy and blackberry. The rug sizes start at 4'0 and go all the way up to 7'3 but you can only get the rug in navy and blackberry from 5'0 to 7'0. This rug is a must for any horse owner whether it's a spare or a main rug as it keeps the horse clean and dry and the rug is easy to manage, it isn't heavy unlike other rugs and because it has a special repel layer it stays cleaner (well as clean as it can) for longer meaning that you don't always need to have your rugs washed every year!

The rug can be bought online (which if you shop around you can get a good deal) or from any Weatherbeeta retailer just in case your not sure of your horse's size this may be the better option. The rug varies in price but on average it is about £55 - £60.
