      Advantages

      Disadvantages

A great tail guard which doesn't slip down or rub the tail

When horses travel in a trailer or horsebox it is so important to have them well protected as they will no doubt suffer a few knocks or bangs whilst travelling and trying to reduce any damage is a must. Travel boots are without doubt the most important piece of kit you need for travelling (my opinion!) but one other item I always use is a tail guard to obviously protect the tail!

Over the years I have tried a few tail guards and none have really lived up to much as I either find them a bit too big and overly padded or they slip down the horse's tail within minutes of being on the horsebox. About five years ago I came across the Woof Wear Tail Guard at my local riding club. I'm a big fan of Woof Wear products as they are well made, suitably priced and are widely available.

The tail guard is obviously designed to fit around the tail to protect the tail bone. It fits as I said around the tail and starts at the top of the tail and should cover the length of the bone right to the dock.

** What is it made from? **

The tail guard is made from a flexible neoprene which is incredibly soft and supple. The neoprene is around 4mm and is closed cell neoprene. It doesn't sag or loose its shape which is ideal as it needs to wrap around the tail. It doesn't slip down easily either and manages to stay in place which is what is needed for a tail guard.

      ** Design **

The tail guard has an ergonomic design for ease of fit and positioning. It is slightly rounded at the top (which covers the top of the tail). There are four straps which have velcro on one side which all secure the tail guard in place around the tail. The straps are quite wide which makes it feel quite secure. The straps are also a decent length so if your horse has a thin or thick tail the tail guard will still stay in place. On the one strap there is the white Woof Wear logo.

One the inside of the tail guard it is incredibly smooth so it won't rub the horse's tail and on the outside of it, it has a plush outer finish which helps the velcro straps stay in place.

      ** How to fit **

The tail guard comes in only size only which is good as you don't have to worry about measurements. The guard is easy to fit as you simply place it on top of the horse's tail, making sure the top of the tail guard is covering the top of the horse's tail. Then you simply wrap in round the tail and fasten the touch and close straps to keep it in place. You can't really over tighten the tail guard so there is no worry there, just make sure it is secure and won't slip down.

      ** Does it work **

I have had quite a few tail guards most of which haven't been up to scratch as they slip down. However, because the Woof Wear tail guard is quite thin in comparison to a lot of others in the market and because of this it manages to stay up on the horse's tail and doesn't move too much. It is inevitable that it will slip a bit due to the horse moving its tail but it does the job and manages to stay up. Also, because it is thin and flexible the horse has no problem moving it's tail freely as some tail guards can be a bit rigid and the horse can't move it's tail easily.

Neoprene is incredibly easy to wash and the tail guard is no different. It can be machine washed on a cool wash and then left to dry naturally. Neoprene dries really quickly and within about half an hour it's dry.

      ** Price **

It is available at Woof Wear stockists and can be purchased for around £15 - £16.

      ** Colours **

The tail guard comes in either black or navy.

      ** Overall **

A decent tail guard which does the job in protecting the horse's tail. It stays in place whilst still allowing the tail to move freely. A definite recommendation from me.
