ICARAÍ BEACH This beach is situated in the interior of Guanabara bay. The name comes from the language of the Tupi indigenous people that once inhabited the area and means 'blessed water'. There are often major events held here including some concerts during the holiday seasons. From here you will be able to view Rio in the distance including its two famous prominent features: Corcovado with the statue of Christ the Saviour and Sugar Loaf Mountain (See my review of Rio de Janeiro for more details). Niterói is a small town located across the Guanabara bay from Rio de Janeiro. It can be accessed from Rio by the President Costa Silva Bridge that winds its way across Guanabara bay or by ferries and catamarans that cross the bay frequently. I wouldn't say it's a must see place to go if you happen to find yourself in Rio but there are some nice beaches here and although it might be considered a place with tourist potential, the beaches are likely to be less crowded and largely absent from foreign tourists.
