Guernsey Market (Guernsey)
Advantages: beautiful buildings and surroundings
The Market is a beautiful area of town, St Peter Port, which has places to eat, shop, and sees many events throughout the year. The Market has a Victorian feel and like much of town has a lovely cobbled Market Square. This is seen in the picture above.
The shops in the market are as follows:
HMV - this shop sells music, games and cds and is a small shop compared to the English versions but I like this one much more than those. I find it is a lot easier to find what you are looking for because of the size and trying to find a dvd in a UK HMV is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. The only problem I have with this shop is that it is so expensive i'd rather buy things online (especially as I have my amazon vouchers!) This shop in particular has some really nice stained glass windows because of where it is situated in the Market.
New Look - Whilst HMV only has one floor, New Look has two and is full of the new fashion. I don't tend to buy here but they do do some nice clothes. This shop is really big and has clothes fitted in for all ages at reasonable prices.
Sports Direct - This shop is located near HMV and also has one floor. I don't really go in here because i don't buy sports clothes but there is so much squashed in the shop you can barely get around. They have great prices on there items so I have occasionally gone in for a Christmas present.
The Co-op - This is a small co-op situated in the town center which is useful to go and buy the odd thing if you are nearby. There is a post office in the corner which is handy as you can do both at the same time.
Joy - This is a unique shop which sells men and womans clothes and fun and quirky gifts. I like going in here to see the gifts as there are a lot of funny things inside. There is a notice on the door which warns you that Parental Guidance is advised.
Holland and Barrats - This shop has a wide range of vitamins and minerals and other health related things. It is a nice spacey shop but I have only been in a few times as i don't need what they sell.
Albany Jewellers - This is a family run business which sells quality jewellery. The business has been going for 35 years. There is always something nice in the window but they are usually a little expensive for me.
The two places to eat in the market are Café Délices and Cafe Bon Port. These both have tables and chairs outside in the summer so it is a great place to sit and watch the people walk past.
The market also has many events throughout the year. Each week there is a Fresh Friday where islanders sell local produce on a market stall and on Saturdays there are often people doing the same with handmade crafts or gift ideas.
For most of the island wide walks like the itex walk Market Square is usually the start or end and during the town carnival you will always find Punch and Judy and the clowns around.
In November to January for the past three or four years with have had an outdoor ice rink which is the only time we have one. I love going skating and it is especially pretty at night when all the fairy lights are on overhead.
The market is a great place to see whilst in town. It is not the biggest place but it is a beautiful area of town.
