A wonderful building which house some fantastic locals shops and businesses.

I am originally from Cheshire, so I used to spend many weekends shopping in Manchester, and I have to say that Afflecks is one of my favourite shopping destinations! Afflecks is located right in the city centre of Manchester, in what is known as the Northern Quarter. I would estimate that it is about a 10 minute walk from Piccadilly train station. It is housed in a pretty old building which seems pretty huge as you walk around it, it must have about 5 floors! Afflecks is known for catering to the more alternative market, but I believe there is something for everyone in Afflecks, with a number of local designers setting up shop there. I won't list all the shops, but I'll list some of my favourites and the more popular ones. Firstly, there is a new shop called Oh Hell, which sells unique hand printed tees. I would say they are aimed at the alternative market with designs such as ouija boards, and upside down crosses, but I really love everything they produce. Their price points are around £18 per t-shirt which I think is fairly reasonable for a unique product. Another one of my favourites is called Me&Yu and this is situated on the 3rd floor. I would say this store has something for everyone, and specialises in handmade clothes such as t-shirts and bags with cute designs. I got a star printed should bag from here when I was at Uni, and it's still going strong years later which I think is a testament to their quality. There is so much in Afflecks, it's hard to condense into a concise review. Basically if you are looking for something unusual and unique this is the place to come. You can get all your fancy dress gear, crazy coloured hair dye, jewellery, shoes, corsets, beads, and vintage clothing! The site also houses a barbers, and piercing studio, so it pretty much has everything you could want under one roof. You can even purchase Afflecks gift vouchers now, which would be the ideal gift for most young people I would have thought! The exact location of Afflecks is 52 Church Street. Opening hours of 10.30 to 6pm Mon to Friday. 10am - 6pm Saturdays, and 11am - 5pm Sundays (only the ground and 1st floors are open on Sunday). I would definitely recommend having a wander through Afflecks if you find yourself in Manchester, you will be sure to find something completely unique!

A great place in manchester, you wont find anywhere else like it.

I love affflecks and these are the reasons why: Location/building- Afflecks palace is in the centre of manchester just down the road form picadilly train station, it is set in and old mill and is spead out over four floors (I think). Its a big place, if you have trouble with stairs then I wouldnt recommend going in, there are loads of staircases that are quite narrow and steep and there are no lifts. Shops/stalls- Inside afflecks there are loads of small shops and stalls. They sell a range of stuff but its all based on a punk rock/ mosher kind of theme, you wont find anything by nike in here. Most of the stuff isnt branded and you can expect to find anything from piercing accesories to incense sticks, they also sell clothing and plenty of cool chunky jewellery. The people working in there tend to e friendly and helpful but can look slightly intimidating with blue hair and hundreds of piercings. There is a tatoo and piercing shop that I would recommend, even though you may expect it to not be very clean it is and the staff are great. There is also a section of afflecks called the arcade that cen be reached via another enterance and by walking through afflecks, in there, there are a few shops that sell mostly clothing, there is a shop called syberdog which sells clothes for going out clubbing, most of it is fluresant and a bit mad. Most of the stuff is reasoanably priced although there are some more expensive shops. There is a cafe on the top floor which sells basic food and drinks (non-alcoholic), It doesnt look like the cleanest place there is which may put some people off. If you go in afflecks at the weekend it will be very busy and crowded, it is also gets quite hot and my sister has often felt very sick in there. If you just want to go and have a look around to see what its like then I would go in the week but you might not get the same atmosphere. Atmoshpere- If you are shocked by strange piercings/tatoos or mulit-coloured mowhaks then give this place a miss. If you plan on walking in wearing a nike tracksuit then also be prepared for some strange looks and the odd offensive comments. Generally the people in here are friendly but they do stand out from the norm, you have to remeber people go here to get away from normality and be themselves and they will not appreciate people starring at them. Dont let this put you off however, Afflecks is a great palce and if you are visiting Manchester its well worth a visit. So to summarise Afflecks Palace is a totally unique place that really makes Manchester stand out, I would definatley tell anone to go and have a look around.

        A great indoor shopping heaven!

Manchester's "Afflecks Palace" is an indoor shopping emporium located in the eclectic area of Manchester town centre known as the Northern Quarter. It is open 10.30am - 6pm on Mondays to Fridays and 10am - 6pm on Saturdays. The building contains numerous independent shops and is a favourite hangout for the indie/rock cultures. That is not to say that other tastes aren't catered for in there. From hip hop clothing to posters to glow sticks, you will be amazed at what you can find in Afflecks. If you are looking to buy an item for a fancy dress party Afflecks is a good place to start your search. The building is a very old building and the outsides of it show various mosaics. There are four floors in Afflecks and a few separate staircases so you may sometimes get slightly lost in there! There is a cafe situated on the fourth floor. I like Afflecks because there are so many different things you can purchase in there. One of my favourite shops is the "bead shop" which is a family run business where you can buy beads to make necklaces or bracelets. I like visiting here but often get carried away and spending a large amount of money! The corridors and the staircases in Afflecks are filled with posters for club events and people advertising various things they are selling. Afflecks has been threatened with closure in recent years much to the disapproval of Manchester and many petitions were signed to keep it open. Afflecks have recently introduced gift vouchers that you can spend in any shop in Afflecks, this is a great gift idea when you just can't find what to get. The people who work in Afflecks always seem very friendly and love to engage in conversation with you. This makes my shopping experience more personal and I feel like I am a valued customer there. You can also get piercings and tattoos in Afflecks, although I would recommend Studio 81 across the road from Afflecks if you are looking to get a tattoo. Afflecks used to cater predominantly for the alternative market, but in recent years it has blossomed and opened up to trades of all sorts. For all you gamers out there, you will be pleased to find a retro games shop in there. If I still haven't catered for your taste then how about getting a hair cut there, or buying some designer vinyl toys, or searching for some one off items of clothing, or some unique hand made jewellery.

          A must-see if visiting Manchester!

I discovered Affleck's Palace 9 years ago when I came to Manchester as a student. Coming from a rural area, the whole city experience was a real eye-opener, but going to Affleck's was an essential part of the cultural awakening! It's worth going to experience its quirkiness and to see that a department store doesn't have to be dull! It's jam-packed (and I do mean jam-packed - it can get a bit crowded and cramped, especially in the first week of the new university year) with stalls and shops selling everything from clothing, to shoes, to piercing accessories, to gifts, to posters. There is even a condom shop (the aptly-named Rubber Plantation). Affleck's has everything for those who want to defy convention. Has it become a stereotype in itself? I don't think so - there is just such a variety of stuff going on. The decor is totally mad, and different from one wall to the next. There are games machines scattered randomly about the arcade, some walls have graffiti, the stairs up from the oldham street entrance have a poster montage that leads you to Panic Posters on the first floor. Recently, the ownership of Affleck's changed hands. There were doubts to its future, as it was unclear whether the new owners would want to continue letting it to the stallholders - but fortunately it was saved. There are still questions to be answered about its future, but it looks safe for the time being - which is great as Manchester would be a less colourful city without it. Even if you think it's not your thing, go and take a look anyway - there's something for everyone, and it's at least worth a look for the experience!

Loads of shops, friendly people and cheese toasties! You will always find what you want!

Affleck's palace! Affleck's palace was established in Manchester in 1982, where its reputation for weird and wonderful jewelry, gifts and unique fashion has grew and grew into a mecca for the........ weird and wonderful people of this world! Affleck's palace is located on Church street, in the Northern quarter of Manchester, just off the main high street. It was opened in 2008, under new management, and has under gone a make over, into the wonderfully bizarre completely unfathomable empire it is today! They have a wide variety of vintage, modern and enchanting shops, including a barbers, a tattoo and piercing studio and a cafe for a well needed break - well with 3 floors of winding pathways to secret places, you will need it! It has a huge number of shops... 63 mini boutiques to be exact, with a little scape for more! As a proud Mancunian, i have been going to Affleck's for as long as i can remember and it has always amazed me, it makes me think of Dr Who's Tardis, as it doesn't look gigantic for the outside, but it is on the inside! You can go around and shop, get a piercing and a cake for days.... and get a bit lost sometimes! One recent experience for me with Affleck's is when i went to town with a friend and we walked around Afflecks, not one, not two...... but 6 times! So it can be done, but bring your hiking boots! All of the shops are so cute, the only way i can describe them is in a alice in wonderland - secret garden kind of way! What ever your looking for you will surely find it here, whether you want a top hat, anime-style bag, make up, a tattoo, a vintage dress, tarot reading, ethnic jewelry, art work or a relaxing chinese massage, Afflecks is the place for you.... and your friends! And often you will find the shop owners and clothes makers working hard on the sewing machine in their shop, ensuring you get the best unique, hand made fashion and jewelry available! Also the products are quite cheap, with sales on most of the time! The shop at Afflecks includes, Katie crush, Panic posters, Cherry cherry, Vampire bunnies, American graffitti, Soho's, Bling blings and the retro games shop! Its a delight to shop at Afflecks! They also have a piercing studio, which is small but it is very sterile and clean. Overall Afflecks is the best shop..... in the world! *Simples* They are open Monday to Saturday and on bank holidays! They also have a new website you should definitely check out! With new photos of Afflecks make over, a list and description of all their shops and a blog. http://www.afflecks.com/ So you can see how stupidly amazing Afflecks is for yourself! You will always find what you need..... and things you didn't know you needed! Thank you for reading my review of the amazing Afflecks! I hope it was helpful :D

Puts the fun back into shopping

The Manchester mini version of London's Camden market, Afflecks Palace is a converted mill in the city centre, marking the edge of the main shopping precinct and the Northern quarter - a quirky and independent area of bars, cafes and shops. The outside of the building has been decorated, with mosaics and metal sculptures adorning its walls. Each of 4 floors and 2 sides of Afflecks Palace is presented as a winding collection of open plan shops that run into each other, to provide a permanent indoor market concept. Shops selling vintage band t-shirts neighbour displays of skimpy neon club outfits, while the building is spotted throughout with classic arcade machines, funfair-style mirrors andsculptures. Staircase walls are plastered with gig posters and club flyers, portraying the social culture of Afflecks' regular visitors and creating a casual, handcrafted atmosphere of a community rather than shopping outlet. Many stalls owned by independent designers, the creative and artistic modern community of Manchester can be found selling one-of-a-kind pieces, from individually measured handmade corsets, to bags and jewellery. Alongside these are more commonly seen brands, such as Thunderegg and Pop boutique. A range of both new and vintage clothing, accessories, homeware and art are available here, as well as tattoists, piercers, hair stylists and a cafe. This has unsuprisingly made Afflecks Palace a weekend hangout for any generally considered an rock/alternative/emo individual, and an atmosphere exists within Afflecks and the Northern Quarter in generally that is more laid-back and quirky than the main cluster of shops in the Arndale, and cafes and bars in Deansgate. This is a place to dedicate the best part of a day to if you're a first time visitor, and the supplier of just about everything you could ever want - if you can't think where to go for bright blue false eyelashes, supplies to make your own jewellery, and a custom made spraypainted canvas, Afflecks Palace is your place.

a fun place to shop and try new things

For all your alternative needs, Afflecks Palace is the place to come. This shop is four floors of everything different and quirky anyone could ever want. It has many stores inside the building each offering unique products. There are many clothes shops that sell alternative items ranging from goth to hello kitty and cute little unique clothes. So if you like to be different and have your own style of clothes, Afflecks is the place you want to come and shop at. One of my favourite aspects is all the little jewellery stores. Most of the stores in there make their own jewellery and you can get some very genuine and one of a kind items such as rings, necklaces and earings. There are some unusual jewellery, but the strange and unusual things are what makes Afflecks the special place that it is. There is also a tattoo parlour on the third floor and also a place to get your hair done if you fancy something different. Plus there is also a cafe on the fourth floor so once you've checked out all the different stores you can have a nice drink and sit down. Afflecks is the place that everyone (teenagers) love to hang out at. It is a great days worth of shopping and i could happily send hours in there wandering around looking at the the different items. If you like the alternative/goth/unusual or are just looking for something different, then try Afflecks Palace.

Afflecks is one of the best places to be of all time especially on a saturday, why? I hear you ask, because saturday is the main day of the week when all the alternatives come and do their shopping and their hanging out and Afflecks is one of the best places to hang out, do your shopping and meet new people. There are shops to suit everyone's taste from gothic to indie, from nu-metaller to punk theres something for everyone. I recommend the studio (which is in the arcade joined on to Afflecks) for piercings and semi-permenant tatoos, there really good and you can get discounts. The clothes and jewelry available is pretty fantastic and you get loads of inspiration for new looks. Overall Afflecks is one hell of a place

AFFLECKS PALACE - 52 Church St Manchester - (0161) 834 2039 Afflecks Palace is to students what Marks & Spencers is to old people. It's a right of passage, which you all must take, and dare I say I have for the best part of the past 12 years. Spread across 3 floors it offers anything you could possibly want as a student from records to clothes, from jewellery to sci-fi toys and a whole range of goods inbetween. What it basically does is appeal to all aspects of "alternative culture" so whether you're a punk, hippie, skater kid or hip hop head you'll find your favourite shops within your first trip. Although still to this day when I visit it seems that I will find something new which I hadn't previously discovered. In terms of prices as a rule it tends to be very cheap although if you're looking for Skater gear such as vans or converse you will be paying much the same price as you would in any other store. Personally my favourite stores are situated on both the 2nd and 3rd floors respectively. Both selling various elements of jewellery, the 2nd floor shop (situated to the left of the stairs as you walk in through the Church Street entrance) aims towards a more hippy-ish vibe with the wooden beads and bracelets favoured by the likes of Blur's Damon Albarn and co. The 3rd floor shop (situated to the right of the stairs on the Church Street entrance) offers the more traditional rock jewellery and chains which you see the kids walking around with in any major city or town. Also for freshers there is the poster shop on the 3rd floor of the Oldham street entrance is well worth a visit as it offers everything from the Nu-Metal bands through to classic Manchester bands such as The Smiths, The Stone Roses and New Order. If you live in Manchester or are a Student in Manchester and haven't been to Afflecks Palace you really are missing out. Not only is it known throughout Manchester, but is actually known thro ughout the world - I don't think I need to say anymore than go there now!!! Alex McCann NB: When rating this review please take a look at some of the other reviews of Afflecks Palace that have been rated VU / U and compare them to mine.

I live in Manchester and after having been there before I was desperate to find Afflecks Palace. I eventually found out that it was on Oldham Road right in the city center (Picadilly). So off I dragged I my boyfriend. We eventaully found it in 'Arcade' on the second floor Afflecks Palace is advertised in the window it's easy to miss so keep your eyes open. Afflecks palace and the Arcade itself is great for every one . It has gothic, trendy, sporty, music and vids, second hand and even fetish stuff and a nice nice little lingerie shop for your sexy undies (girls) all under one roof. There's even a tasty little cafe there if get hungry. You should definately check it out if you're evr in manchester. My boyfriend found a stall all lads would like full of film poster and old mags so you girls can head off shopping and just dump your boyfriend in there until you want money of course

                    • "once you go
                    • you'll never want to leave"

This is possible the best shopping centre in the whole world. For those of us of an 'alternative' mindset, nothing is more fun than walking round Afflecks with a view to spending all our money. There are clothes shops a-plenty, ranging from everyday type clothes to second hand and going out clothes. Everyone is catered for and as shoes are also sold, you have no excuse for going to the Arndale Centre. Ever. Possibly better than the clothes shops (let's be honest, clothes are clothes and can be bought anywhere) are the shops which deal in stuff. You know, stuff. The indefibnable essence of every teenager's room. Whether you want plastic bead curtains, cushions, hair-dye or Fred Durst hats (sadly, even they are sold) Afflecks is the place to go. There is an amazing bed shop and a fantastic shop on the first floor which sells all manner of kitsch goods with which to decorate a student home. The soap shop is also worth a visit as it has the most superb scents wafting from it. Afflecks seels stuff for every occasion and when you get bored, you can go to one of the two cafes to rest your aching feet and spend more money. Whatever you want (within reason...) you can buy it at Afflecks. Go there. NOW!

I have been to Affleks paalce in Manchester a number of times and its quite an interesting place to visit. It has loads of gothis, 60/70's boutiques and second hand clothes stalls. There are some specialist hairdressers such as an afro carribean hairstylist. There are candle shops, jewellery sales shops, record shops, cafes and so much more. My most intersting visit there yet was a visit that I made with my mum when she got married for the second time. We found her outfit and my bridesmaid outfit, both of which were beautifully tailored and wonderfully made, for £65 all in. Well as its mainly known for gothic and hippy or secondhand clothing everyone was a bit surprised to hear where we'd got the clothing from. But when they saw the outfits on the day I think a few people were planning the following Saturday shopping trip. Theres not much access for pushchairs or if there is I've never found it so either dont take your pushchair or leave the kids with a carer

Everytime I go to Manchester shopping (not that often) I always have a browse in Afflecks Palace. It is a very unique shopping place with lots small stalls inside selling mainly clothing and jewellery. Many of the clothes stalls are geared towards the gothic and alternative look. There are some second hand stalls that sell 60's and 70's clothes, and it is great just having a look for the most outrageous outfit. I would definitely look here if I was going to a fancy dress party!! On another floor there is a great music shop. You will almost certainly find any albulm there. Also when visiting the Afflecks Palace, don't forget to visit the condom shop, it is definitely worth a look!

If you want to find a whole new world of shopping in Manchester, head for Affleck’s Palace at 52 Church Street in the city centre. I suppose I could loosely term this a Shopping Centre (it is, after all, a collection of assorted shops on different levels under one roof), but banish all thoughts of piped muzak, fake marble and potted palm trees. Affleck’s Palace is choc full of independent shops and stalls you won’t find anywhere else; from comic books and cute Japanese toys to fetish wear and roller skates, if it’s bizarre and fun you’ll find it here. The atmosphere is great, a bit like walking into a relaxed club where everyone knows you and smiles. Try the café for cheap mugs of fresh coffee and great views where you can spy on the poor shoppers in the ordinary world on the street below. They also do a fab range of homemade cakes that usually manage to tempt me every time I go there. This would be a brilliant place to shop for presents, you can be sure whatever you buy it’ll be unique! It’s very easy to lose yourself and discover, as you emerge blinking into the real world again, that you’ve been wandering around for hours. If they had flats for sale inside Affleck’s, I’d move in!
