AFFLECKS PALACE - 52 Church St Manchester - (0161) 834 2039
Afflecks Palace is to students what Marks & Spencers is to old people. It's a right of passage, which you all must take, and dare I say I have for the best part of the past 12 years. Spread across 3 floors it offers anything you could possibly want as a student from records to clothes, from jewellery to sci-fi toys and a whole range of goods inbetween.

What it basically does is appeal to all aspects of "alternative culture" so whether you're a punk, hippie, skater kid or hip hop head you'll find your favourite shops within your first trip. Although still to this day when I visit it seems that I will find something new which I hadn't previously discovered. In terms of prices as a rule it tends to be very cheap although if you're looking for Skater gear such as vans or converse you will be paying much the same price as you would in any other store.

Personally my favourite stores are situated on both the 2nd and 3rd floors respectively. Both selling various elements of jewellery, the 2nd floor shop (situated to the left of the stairs as you walk in through the Church Street entrance) aims towards a more hippy-ish vibe with the wooden beads and bracelets favoured by the likes of Blur's Damon Albarn and co. The 3rd floor shop (situated to the right of the stairs on the Church Street entrance) offers the more traditional rock jewellery and chains which you see the kids walking around with in any major city or town. Also for freshers there is the poster shop on the 3rd floor of the Oldham street entrance is well worth a visit as it offers everything from the Nu-Metal bands through to classic Manchester bands such as The Smiths, The Stone Roses and New Order.

If you live in Manchester or are a Student in Manchester and haven't been to Afflecks Palace you really are missing out. Not only is it known throughout Manchester, but is actually known thro
ughout the world - I don't think I need to say anymore than go there now!!!

A bit too far for me but sounds a five star establishment. Nice one - Kay

I first visited Afflecks Palace about 5 years ago when a I went with a friend to visit her family in Manchester. I've been there a few times since and I too have my favourite shops. Trouble is I always end up spending too much money there.

I am the wrong generation, but can imagine how it would look to a student. Ah! Heady days! :-)
