She's evidently a little crazy, not quite living in the real world, and Solness sees her as an opportunit y to break away from the stifling misery and guilt of his everyday life. It's probably not giving too much away to say that things don't exactly end with a happy cheer and lots of laughter and singing - Ibsen wouldn't have known a happy ending if it came and kicked him in the backside. The Master Builder was written by Henrik Ibsen in 1892. One of those gloomy Scandinavian plays, it's currently enjoying a run in the Albery Theatre in London's fashionable West End. Ibsen's not exactly the most fun playwrite ever to have lived - light comedy really wasn't his thing - but this production should do very well indeed. The reason being that Patrick Stewart is making his return to the London stage for the first time in goodness only knows how long. Before he got involved in Star Trek and the X-Men, Stewart had a long and varied stint at the RSC, playing many of Shakespeare's most interesting supporting characters to great acclaim. ...
