Battery Park (Gourock)
Advantages: Great outdoor space
Disadvantages: Cafes not great
The Battery Park in Greenock is situated just at the border between Greenock and Gourock and is directly on the waterfront. The parks facilities consist of two car parking areas, a skate park, astroturf pitches, a pavilion which houses a gym, cafe and toilets, large grass areas and two kids adventure parks.
The park is totally flat with good wide paved walkways & cycle paths making it disabled friendly and excellent for kids on their bikes/roller skates etc. The views from the park are totally stunning and on a sunny day its almost idyllic. The park is looked after by Inverclyde council and is impeccably maintained with neat grass and no litter. Dog walkers are aplenty in the park but you will never see any mess left behind as dog bins and litter bins are all round the park.
The gym is run by Inverclyde Leisure and although small is perfectly forms and it includes treadmills, cross trainers, bikes, rowers, weight machines and all the other items you would expect in a much larger gym. The staff are friendly and helpful and its clean and hygienic.
Sadly I've had some bad experiences with the cafe and find it very small and quite claustrophobic. Despite the menus you generally find the cafe sells only burgers and chips and you can have quite a wait. It tends to run out of ice cream on hot days and customer service is non existent. It is handy to pop in for a drink and a snack for the kids though.
The large kids play area is well used and loved by kids and has a base of sand which is always clean and litter free. The park includes climbing frames, slides, seesaws etc and my daughter can play happily there for hours. The only draw back for me is the two entrances/exits to the play area. I think its always safer with only one as then no young ones can wander out. The smaller park is also sand lined and includes swings, its generally quieter and used by toddlers.
The astroturf turf and changing facilities are again well maintained and well used by local teams. The skate park is a little tired but possibly due to be replaced soon, it is however very popular with young teens.
Overall the park is a great place to blow off the cobwebs, walk the dog, kick a ball around, go for a run or run around with the kids. Its maybe best to be avoided when the weather is very bad as being right at the water edge the wind tends to blow through you and the waves have been known to come crashing over the edge.
Summary: Great place to spend a few hours
