Bengal Flava (Coventry)
Advantages: Great quality, great prices and really nice food
Disadvantages: The nan I had really put me off nan!
Just recently I have been in the throws of moving back to Coventry (my home town) from Weston Super Mare. I have been staying at and with my parents until my flat becomes available that I am moving into which means I am eating lots with them of course. Both me and my Stepdad love our curries and when I first arrived back on Coventry turf he produced a menu for this place declaring that Indian take away wise this was the best place he had found. Since that first take away I experienced from here we've had rather a few and I really do agree with him the food is great!

This place only offers a takeaway service so you can nip to the clean and tidy shop unit and place your order and wait, call in your order and go to collect it but it has to be said that it is far easier to phone the order in and have it delivered and for three people with what we order we find that delivery is just short of under and hour and never over that and food is always delivered hot and in large portions.
So whats on offer then?
Plenty is the answer! There are plenty of starters, in fact 21 of them with a very small selection of those being vegetarian, in fact I can only make out one true Vegetarian dish though if you eat fish there are a fair amount of those on offer. You have the usual suspects on there such as Onion Bhaji (£1.80), Chicken Chat and Prawn Puree (£2.95), which is a personal favourite of mine from here with plenty of prawns in a spicy bhuna sauce, with a lovely and fluffy round puree and it comes with a bag of chopped up onions and with a gorgeous mint sauce! It really is yummy this one and I have also had the Chicken Tikka Starter which also comes with a bag of salad and some mint sauce and costs just £2.55 and is lovely spiced breast of chicken chunks with loads and loads of flavour to it.
Then for main meals, once again there is a good selection. You can choose from Tandoori Dishes, Bengal Flava Specialities, Chef Specials, Biryani Dishes or from Traditional Dishes to which you choose from Ceylon, Korma, Green Chilli, Bhuna, Madras and Balti and a few others to which you then choose what you want in it such as Mix Veg (£3.50), Chicken or prawn (£3.95), Keema (£4.50) and with a few other choices. As well this little lot you can go for mixed dishes such as Chicken Tikka Mushroom Balti (£4.95), Aloo, Chana or Paneer Balti (£3.95) as well as from rolls and wraps like Chicken or Lamb Bhuna Roll or a Chicken Tikka Wrap (£4.50), or a tray meal like Chicken Tikka Masalla & Egg Fried Rice or Chicken Curry & Egg Fried Rice for £4.50. There are two set meals on offer as well, one for one person at £7.95 or a set meal for two at £16.95, Continental Meals like Chicken or Prawn Salad cost £4.95 as well as a selection of omelettes and then of course your usual breads starting at a Plain Nan costing £1.40 to a Family Sized Nan at £2.40 with loads of choices such as Cheese, Bangla, Peshawari and all sorts in between. They have a large selection of rices here too again from Boiled Rice at £1.40 a portion to Coconut Fried Rice at £1.80 and chips are £1.40, a Green Salad £1.50 and plenty of sauces and papadums to choose from and side dishes such as Mattar Panner and Sag Paneer at £2.50 a portion.
There really is plenty to choose from and it all comes in tin foil deep trays with cardboard lids unless its the breads which come in foil lined paper bags.
So what have we had from here then? Well I have mentioned what I have eaten starter wise and I think they tasted great, were decent portions and worth the money. For my mains I have had Chicken Balti with which costs £3.95 and that was lovely with plenty of juicy tomatoes and onions in it with lots of thick chicken breast and plenty of sauce. I have also had Chicken Tikka Massala (£5.25) which was absolutely melt in the mouth good in a creamy but mildy spiced sauce and a King Prawn Korma (£6.50) which had a handful of large prawns within it which were juicy and in a sweet and creamy bright yellow sauce. The chips are nice from here and plentiful and the rices I have had are Mushroom And Keema Fried Rice (£1.95) and I loved both of those being large portions and not too greasy.
The only issue I have with this place is the Nan Breads. I only ordered one once and I ordered a Cheese Nan which cost £1.90. It was large and round but not fluffy and looked a bit collapsed. I could see some bright yellow cheese melted within it but not enough and I certainly couldn't taste it and it was doughy and so I was put off and wouldn't order a nan from here again.
My parents love meals from here and my stepdad usually has a chicken Tikka Main meal with a portion of Madras Sauce and shares a Garlic Fried Rice with my mum who likes Chicken Tikka main meals of all descriptions from here (there are a few variations to choose from of those on the menu) and they share a nan like garlic and cheese.
Great quality, great portions and there is a good range to choose from and if you ask them to adapt something to our tastebuds they will try their up most to satisfy you. I think the prices starting at £3.95 is excellent and even the most expensive main meal is only £6.50 and that is for king prawns!
All in all this place gets the thumbs up from us but for me its just a shame about the nans but hey I'm happy with a 60p Chapati so all is not lost! I do recommend you try this place if in the area as its a nice little take away!
Summary: A good budget place to fullfill your curry needs with!
