Advantages: Excellent Score, Different to other West-End productions
Disadvantages: Expensive
I'd say around 3 or 4. I caught this on its 4 night running, so the price was extortionate and the seats were limited, and we had to squeeze our way across Wilton Road past the limousines and through the crowds of people taking photographs of the building. First of all I was hit by the refurbishment work carried out on the Apollo Victoria. Anyone who had seen Starlight express who hasn't been into the theatre since the bridges, skating tracks and general blackness will be astounded by the extra space and pristine condition of the beautiful architecture of the building that hasn't seen the light of day since the dawn of Starlight Express 17 years ago. The stalls have all the seats back, and a level of the theatre that was hidden by the intricate track-work of the previous occupant has come back into use. And not a sign that any of it was ever in place. I think Feathers has covered all the points about the show and its production, so I'll go on to how I felt about the musical. Due to the style of music and choreography of the show, Lloyd Webber's influence was clearly minimal when it comes to influencing the output rather than the runnings of the show. But that wasn't means for disappointment. Since Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat on a World Aids Day performance (where Philip Schofield and cast danced off stage), I haven't seen the cast have an influence in such a way that they were dancing in the aisles. They were for Bombay Dreams. I wasn't overly impressed with the scenery, but I feel that it was far outweighed by the power of the music and the on-stage chemistry between Preeya Kalidas and Raza Jaffrey. But, anyone who's seen it, can someone tell me what transsexuals have to do with the Bollywood film industry? Even if it hasn't, the innuendos were still unexpected and entertained the masses with Sweetie's rib-tickling antics. It's worth a look. Definitel

- 12/02/03 As I keep telling people, us working class geordies have no wish to frequent the theatre. We much prefer to go down the boozer...
This sounds alright, though.
Nice op, ta. |
