Advantages: Every City has them, great places to see wildlife, or escape to nature.

Disadvantages: Not enough in my opinion, and more need to be bigger.

I think one of the bad points here is that there is simply not enough parkland in Britain, or at least parkland which is well managed to a point where it not only looks attractive and is lovely to walk in, but at the same time provides habitat for wildlife that has been displaced by habitat destruction involved in constructing cities. There are however some exceptionally nice parks in Britain, and I do think that we should be very proud of many.

Parks in britain are generally free, or at least the parks that I am familiar with. For those unfamiliar with the concept, a park is an area set aside for trees and plants to grow in generally an urban environment, usually on the outskirts of a major city. When one feels like a walk with nature, they can go for a walk in the park, and so can observe wildlife and breathe fresh air within an easy distance. Parks often have play areas for children and lakes or ponds where visitors can fish, feed ducks and geese and perhaps even take a boat ride.

One particularly impressive park that I have visited is Regents Park in London. I got off an Regents Park underground station and had to walk through the park to get to London Zoo, it was absoloutely beautiful, with well/carefully planted flower arrangments, rose gardens and trees. The Park is also complete with excellent sports facilties and is the largest outdoor sports area in central London.

Another Park I love is Roath Park in Cardiff, which is centered around an absoloutely huge lake. Roath Park is right in the middle of open Cardiff and yet despite this, it is an amazing place to see birds, not only more common species, but also some very rare species, and bird watchers are often observed. Boat rides and ice cream are also available. Roath Park is a professionally run park, and there are always park rangers about, and I think that having a large ranger presence is perhaps one of the key points to having a particularly successful park.

I would love to one day visit the legendary Central Park in New York City and really see for myself how British Parkland compares.

Summary: Many are nice, but we could do with more, and more that have permenant rangers.

There are too few parks - too few areas for children to run around full stop. Those over grown suburban parks are underused valuable resources. They are precious and underthreat.

It's not always easy to find a good park for younger children but we have a few close by that we try and visit often! Rebecca Xx
