Advantages: free

Disadvantages: the odd bit of poo

The best move I ever made was moving to a poor part of the city. The council have ploughed so much money into this area that we have the pick of the nicest parks you can imagine.

First up, the new one down the road has a huge sand-pit, two slides, a bridge, a climbing frame and a basketball hoop. I am so chuffed with it it's amazing! I took my two year old there dead early the other day (around 8am), to avoid the crowds, and boy did we have fun!

There are a handful of parks within easy walking distance to me, and I have to say that they're all great. The equipment doesn't get wrecked, and there isn't dog poo everywhere. Sure, you have to look out because there's the odd bit here and there, but the sceptics may think it would just get wrecked by local yobs but it doesn't. There's a sense of local pride and ownership over the area that I really admire.

Another thing I like, is the way they have different things in the parks in the same area - each one has something unique to offer, and so you can rotate around them through the week and your children never get bored.

In a world where there isn't a lot for free, it's great to have parks to go to. Of course, they're weather dependent, but at the moment that's not a problem.

The worst thing about parks is the way you get rain puddles at the bottom of the slides - I always forget to take anything to wipe them with, and think they need some genious invention to sort that out.

All in all, I recommend living in a deprived area and taking advantage of the parks!

Summary: do it

The downside to sand pits & pools at the park is people throw crap in them around here (syringes, glass etc) and they are always getting closed for weeks for maintenance.

Puddles at the bottom of the slide is all part of the fun!

Well, living in Central London, I'm kind of spoilt for parks, so I couldn't agree more!
