Advantages: Wonderful childrens activities

Disadvantages: Expensive restaurants and slot machines

I have just returned from a 4 night break at Butlins in Bognor with my 4 and 6yr old plus another single mum, her 6yr old and her 14mth old.

Have to admit I was dreading it. I am ashamed to say I had a preconceived idea that it would be full of chavs and tackiness. Oh how I'm eating my words now.

On arrival the staff were efficient, check in was easy and the silver apartment was clean and comfortable.

We took advantage of the resort guide we'd been given and planned our first evening's entertainment. we had a meal out then went to a red coat show. It was excellent, the children loved the fact that they could leave us and go to the front of the stage to interact with the redcoats and we felt happy they were safe but had some independance. The only down side to the evening was the overpriced meal.

We nipped out to tesco's the following day to stock up and from then on had our meals in our apartment.

Our 4 nights flew by mainly because we gave the children every opportunity to take advantage of the activities offered. My 6yr old, ever the joiner, got to go in the wrestling ring and won a prize and also got to dance on stage in a red coat show.

Even the 14mth old enjoyed himself in the swimming complex which had a sloping walk into the water which meant you could sit and splash with babies and small toddlers no problem, there was a toddler play room and he had a great time in the arts and craft room glueing and sticking. Some of the activities are not easily found but all you have to do is read the guide and use the map.

We also had a wonderful time on Bognor's lovely sandy beaches and chatted to others who had enjoyed venturing off site for an afternoon.

The only down side was the cost of eating out and the many slot machines that eat away at your finances if you give in to your kids.

My boys both wept buckets when they had to leave and although you have to accept that it's never going to be a relaxing , peaceful holiday for adults, it is terrific for kids and I'm not ashamed to say that we've already booked to return next summer but this time for the whole seven days.

Summary: Will tick all the boxes if you have lively children who like to join in,
