Advantages: Good time, family enjoyment, well - known name
Disadvantages: If you eat out all the time you could blow a fortune !
We spent a memorable long weekend at the Sixties Soul Weekend Break at the Skegness Butlins in the Spring of 2000. It was brilliant. My best mate's brother-in-law, Steve, booked it over the internet and most of her family went - Steve, his wife, 2 kids and a friend, my mate and her hubby, one of her kids and his girlfriend, and me. Enough of us to get a discount on the rate! Drove there to arrive on the Friday afternoon (check in was 4pm) and we stayed until Monday morning. We were in 2 apartment type chalets, quite roomy, living room, loo with shower, 3 bedrooms, small kitchenette. No complaints though - we didn't intend spending that much time in the chalet after all.
The music was brilliant - we went to afternoon sessions and evening do's. With three venues playing at once, it was a matter of juggling who we wanted to go see and when. Saw some of the old greats - Jimmy Ruffin, Bebe and Cece Wynans, and The Drifters, plus some excellent tribute bands. Inbetween there were plenty of oldies on the dance floor dancing to the soul of the sixties and seventies, courtesy of the resident DJ's.
There wasn't any age restriction, so there was plenty of fun for the little ones - joining in on the dance floor or going to The Noddy Show. I was disappointed with that - I guess it's my grandmotherly attributes taking over from the wild-child remnant - but I did actually send a complaint to Butlin's with regard to the show. Not that it wasn't enjoyable - some may even think I'm a prude - but Noddy is a KIDS SHOW. Play some of the chart hits by all means - but did we really have to see Geri Halliwell flaunting her attributes (on the big screen video) as she mauled at sexy half-undressed males? Maybe I'm being over-protective but I felt uncomfortable with that.
However, if you get chance to go to the next weekender - GO FOR IT! You will not be disappointed! It's not only SOUL either, they do all sorts of music. Seventies weekends, Fifties weekends, something for fans of all styles. Check them out at the Butlins website:

Even though these Weekenders are usually "out of season" offerings, all the other stuff was open. The food places, arcades, bingo, etc - all the stuff that helps suck your money down. Each of the couples that were with me spent 22 quid or more over the weekend. Fans of mine know I am a cheapie. I blew a whole twelve quid the whole time we were there, and it would have been under a tenner had I not stopped in to play bingo that last morning!
Summary: EXcellent Soul Weekend
