Hafan y Mor Holiday Park (Gwynedd, Wales)
Advantages: location, activities, lovely staff
Disadvantages: food and cost of some activities
I have just returned from a weeks holiday in this Haven site, and after reading quite a few scary reviews before we went, I thought I would write a positive review and explain some of the many good points this camp site has to offer.
I had booked 7 nights half board in a comfort plus apartment, as I booked so early the price difference between basic and comfort plus was very little and in my opinion so worth the extra money.
Checking in - We could check in from 2 pm, although you can arrive from twelve and explore the site or have a bite to eat.
At check in we were greeted by a lovely helpful lady, she gave us a welcome pack which included a park map, a whats on guide explaining what and where various activities are, our park passes to gain access to the swimming pool and entertainment complexes and quite a lot of other bumph about buying caravans, safety and local attractions. She also gave us our meal tickets which were needed at each meal time.
The accommodation - we couldn't have asked for a better location, our chalet was situated directly opposite the swimming pool and in front of the restaurant.
I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and condition of the accommodation, it had two large bedrooms, and a large bathroom with toilet, shower and heated towel rail which was used every day to dry our swimming bits. Each bedroom had a large double wardrobe with lots of hangers and shelf space. The main bedroom had a TV, DVD player, kettle, tea pot and a small supply of milk, tea and coffee. It also had a small fridge which was great for storing cold drinks and milk. At the front of the chalet we had a small garden space with a picnic bench. We could park directly outside which was brilliant.
As we were half board linen and towels were provided which saved us valuable space in out small car.
The food - Meals were provided in a large canteen style restaurant called The Afron Gardens, meals were served school dinner style, by friendly happy staff.
Breakfast was served between 8:00 and 10:30 am, every day was the same, you could choose a cooked breakfast with sausages, bacon, eggs etc. or there were a selection of cereals, fruit and toast with jam.
Dinner was served between 5:00 and 6:30 pm, for starter each day there was a different soup with rolls or one other option such as pate or pasta salad.
Main courses changed daily but there was usually a choice of four dishes, some of the choices were pizza, roast chicken, lasagne, curry, meatballs, fish, sausages, cottage pie. There was always potatoes, chips, vegetables and beans. There was also always a large salad selection and jacket potatoes.
For dessert there was ice cream, fruit, cake and custard or a cheesecake.
The food was not horrible but it wasn't exactly brilliant and after a week I was certainly craving some home cooked delights.
The park facilities, Hafan y Mor is one of Havens flagship parks, it is described as an all action family park and it certainly lives up to it's name. Each day was filled with activities should you wish to do them, from fencing to football, kids clubs, swimming lessons, roller disco, nature trails and water sports. We went to one kids club session which the children both enjoyed, we also hired a boat one day, this cost £7 for half an hour but was great fun.
There is a great crazy golf course which costs £12 for a family of four, go karts, trampolines, bouncy castles and these huge water globes, these activities cost between £2-£5 so can add up if you go on them more than once.
There is also a rope works adventure park on the park, it costs £20 for a two hour session, my daughter and husband done it and it was one of the highlights of their holiday, so if zip wires, jumping of high pillars into thin air and rock climbing are your thing this would be a good thing to do.
There is direct beach access to a beautiful little beach with stunning mountain views sadly we never really had the weather for a proper day at the beach but we did manage a bit of paddling and shell hunting.
There are three clubs on the park, The bonga wonga bar, Showbar and the Boardwalk. Each catering for different tastes ie in one there is the kids character shows and in another there would be a cabaret act. The kids entertainment was what you would expect lots of silly games and dancing and my two children loved it, we didn't really see any of the other acts except a wrestling match which was good fun.
The swimming pool was fantastic it had three large flumes and a very high and fast slide, it had rapids, a hot tub, a children's pool with several little slides and a main pool where the waves come every half an hour or so. We went swimming almost every day and loved it. Lockers cost £1 but you get it back when you are finished.
There are two Spar shops on site, a burger king, fish and chip shop, Papa Johns pizza, Starbucks coffee shop and a Mash and Barrel bar which serves food.
There are also several Haven shops selling DVDs, toys, sweets etc.
Hafan Y Mor is set in a beautiful location in North Wales with stunning views. It makes a perfect base for exploring this gorgeous country.
A holiday like this is never going to be five star luxury and we heard many people moaning about anything and everything. It was raining almost everyday, the food wasn't all that and the entertainment was cheesy but a holiday is what you make it and we had a brilliant time.
Summary: A great family holiday in a gorgeous location
