~ ~ A few of you will have read my recent opinion about our holiday in Scotland this summer, where we had a couple of days on the shores of what is probably Scotland’s most famous stretch of water, Loch Ness. Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to win a Pulitzer Prize by getting a definitive photograph of the Loch’s most famous inhabitant, Nessie, and by breaking the story of his/her/their discovery to an incredulous world. But my visit was enough to peak my interest in a story that can trace its origins back as far as the Vikings. Nessie Lives. Well, that’s if you choose to believe the history of the Loch and the monster as chronicled on this website, www.lochness.co.uk. ~ ~ I came across the website while hunting on the Internet for some facts and figures on the loch for my last opinion. I was looking for factual information like its depth, width, length and so on, but soon found myself totally engrossed on this fun site. There has been a spate of newspaper articles recently proclaiming that the whole monster story is a complete hoax, simply invented to boost the tourist trade in the area. (as if it needed any boosting!) These stories were kick started by the photographer who supposedly took the most famous picture ever of Nessie back in the 1950’s confessing on his deathbed that the snapshot was a hoax. But there’s no convincing these folks. They maintain that despite the bad press Nessie has been receiving lately, that there are simply too many reliable sightings for the story not to be true. You can check out some of these supposed sightings here at the site, and see what you think yourself. ~ ~ They also have a number of the photographs of the monster supposedly taken over the years that you can view. They maintain that Nessie is in fact more than one creature, and a throwback to the Mesozoic era, and more specifically to a creature well documented in foss
il form, called the Plesiosaur. The Oxford Dictionary definition of this creature certainly fits the bill as far as Nessie is concerned. “A large marine reptile, with large paddle-like limbs and a long flexible neck” That sure sounds like the Nessie I’m used to reading about! ~ ~ You can read up on all the recent, up to date news about Nessie.Seemingly a guy arrived at the loch earlier this year with the intention of trapping the monster in an enormous net, only to be met by the chief ‘white witch’ in the United Kingdom, intent on casting a spell to protect the creature, and to put a hex on his plans. Don’t know whether the spell was effective or not, but certainly the plan to capture Nessie in a net never produced any results. ~ ~ They have a webcam situated on the shore, so if you have a few years to spare you can sit glued to your computer screen in the hope of catching a glimpse of this most elusive of creatures. There’s even a mock certificate you can print out to declare yourself a world authority on the monster phenomenon. You can join up to receive a monthly newsletter about Nessie related activities, and even send a Nessie web card to your friends. Or enter the competition sponsored by the bookmakers William Hill, who award a prize of £1,000 to the taker of the best Nessie photograph over the space of the year. And if all this isn’t enough to slake your thirst for knowledge about the “puir wee cratur”, (translation: poor little creature) then you can log onto the many links they provide to similar Nessie sites. ~ ~ What do I think? Well, it’s never been actually DISPROVED, now has it?

- 30/09/01 Yup .. we could share the cost o' the malt whisky ... heee heeee ! - couldna resist that.
And Aspen would have to come too - he has had a message from Nessie (see his op).
Seriously, when i was there in 1986, I did see a large ripple, but it was probably the 'wash' of a passing boat. |
