A great place to go on a rainy day.....

Planet Zoom is a childrens soft play area that is situated in our local Bowling Alley, Strikes, here in Dereham, Norfolk. It is fairly easy to find and is located on Station Road right next door to the swanky new Leisure Centre that was built here just a couple of years ago. Planet Zoom and Strikes are part of a chain with similar establishments located in Kings Lynn, Ely and Sudbury ~ though the only one I am familiar with is the one here in Dereham.

Open between the hours of 10am to 6pm Monday through to Sunday, the play area is designed around a Spaceship theme. There is the usual ball pit to play in with a soft play area segregated from the main play area aimed specifically with very young children and toddlers in mind. The main play area, meanwhile, consists of a large climbing arena for the children to go up and enjoy with lots of different things to play with, all designed around the whole interplanetary space traveller theme. There is a large, twisty tunnel slide to go down, the usual soft-stairs that spiral up over three levels, rope bridges to cross and lots of spaceship-shaped den areas that the kids can climb in and out of.

Although you are allegedly supposed to stay for 90 minutes maximium, every time I have gone it has been during "off-peak" times and so the staff have been less than fussy and we have been able to stay a bit later if we wish. Entry to the play area is through a gate that you have to be buzzed in and out of and every child has to be registered on a form before you can go in or out to keep track of who is currently in the play area.

The price of admission is minimal: under 1's get in for £1.95 on or off-peak; for under 5's it is £3.50 off or £4.25 on-peak and for over 5's it is £3.95 or £4.95 depending on the times. Peak times are classed simply as weekends and school holidays, off-peak all other times. Also on Wednesday mornings they have "messy mornings" where they get out paints and play dough until 12 noon and your child gets a free drink included. The price then though is £3.95 regardless....this is quite good though because, as with all these places, food and drink can be a bit pricey though at Planet Zoom I have found the cost of drinks more reasonable than at most places!

My daughter loves this soft play area and, though we don't go too often (we reserve it as a special treat!), it is a good place to go to get out of the house on a rainy day and is very handy being right on our doorstep. As soft childrens play areas go, I think it is one of the better ones and we have tried out several in our local surrounding area!

It is reasonably priced, good vvalue for money and soething a bit different. Certainly I would recommend it to anyone with young children who are stuck with ideas as to where to go and even if you don't live locally to Dereham, the good thing is that at least there are other locales available in and around East Anglia.
